Notes: Summary A study was conducted on the efficiency of workers in an industrial inspection task. The task consisted of the inspection of coins passing in front of the workers on a conveyor belt. In addition to the efficiency analysis, working conditions and personal factors of the workers were studied and a series of time studies was conducted. Results showed a relative low level of efficiency which is attributed to the high amount of information to be processed, system of payment, and several limiting working conditions, e.g. illumination, training process, organization of rest pauses and inadequate vision of the workers. The relationships between the tasks studied and typical experimental vigilance studies are discussed.

Hierzu wurde die a. a.
Notes: Summary The efficacy of air bags in head-on collisions has been studied in 3 experiments with unembalmed cadavers on the impact sled. In one of the cases the impact produced no injuries; in the other injuries to the spine and the soft meninges in the region of the parasa-gittal bridging veins occured, and in the third, the bag which had been used once before, burst. In future experiments special attention should be given to the cervical spine and the superior cerebral veins.

Notes: Summary To elucidate the causal mechanism of the main bodily injuries to unbelted drivers and front-seat passengers in motor cars involved in head-on collisions, the results at autopsy were compared to the findings made during the investigation of the cars. The injury pattern depends on the design and the deformation of the car body. The investigation shows, that the trunk of the driver should be kept in the upright position when it is thrown against the steering wheel and the panel in order to minimize injuries. The impact area should be as large as possible to prevent severe injuries. The steering column should not protrude into the passenger compartment. In order to prove the correctness of this theory some experiments with unembalmed cadavers were performed on the impact sled. In other experiments aortic ruptures were produced in cadavers by a blow to the lower part of the anterior chest wall. The intraaortic pressure has been measured in these experiments and the aorta seems to tolerate not more than 1200 mm Hg (dynamic load). The reconstruction of the “secondary collision” of front-seat passengers indicates, that the best protection against severe injuries can be obtained by maintaining the trunk in the upright position. The impact area (panel) should be as large as possible. The panel (dashboard) should have such a design as to prevent, in case of head-on collision, trauma to the neck of the passenger which would result in an angular acceleration of the head. Experiments with unembalmed cadavers on the impact sled have shown that it is possible to protect the front-seat passenger from injuries in head-on collisions at about 50 km/hr with appropriate panel design.

    Topics: Medicine
Notes: Abstract We compared the filling responses of the cecum and the sigmoid of the guinea pig using volumes up to 60 ml and 2.5 ml, respectively. In the isolated cecum, each 1-cm increment of hydrostatic pressure above zero led to accommodation of 10 ml volume; in the sigmoid, the yield pressure (at which accommodation first occurred) was 6 cm H2O, and pressure increments up to 20 cm H2O produced volume increments of less than 0.5 ml. Resting pressure at half-maximal filling was 5.0±0.7 cm H2O for the sigmoid and 1.7±0.6 cm H2O for the cecum. K+ depolarization led to a significant upward shift in the pressure curves of both segments. Ca2+ withdrawal decreased sigmoid and cecal pressures at some volumes. Distension of the cecum triggered intermittent contractions, which began with the shortening of the teniae and were associated with low-amplitude pressures and expulsion of a 5- to 10-ml volume. Distension of the sigmoid produced propagating contractions that were associated with high-amplitude pressures and lengthening; compartmentalization in the sigmoid prevented efflux from it, and volume inflow was not affected by pressure waves. Our observations indicate that its large capacity and great distensibility make the cecum suitable for reservoir functions, whereas its narrowness and lack of distensibility make the sigmoid a high-resistance conduit.

Notes: Abstract Subjects were exposed to vibrations, which were compounded of some few harmonics. They had to compare the combination of harmonics with a sinusodial reference vibration of 5 Hz. The amplitude of this reference frequency was varied so often, till the test person felt an equal stress by the combined vibration and the sinusodial one. By this procedure we found amplitudes of the reference vibration, by which the response of combined vibrations was described numerically. Thus, the influence of harmonics in vibrations to subjective response could be ascertained quantitatively. The tests were carried out with vibrations, which included first harmonics between 2 Hz and 8 Hz. If there were discrete frequencies in the spectrum, which belonged to the main resonance frequency range of man (about 5 Hz), this components were nearly alone important for the subjective response. If the fundamental frequency was below 5 Hz, the second and third harmonics had an essential influence to the subjective response whilst higher harmonics as the second one were of no importance, when the first harmonic was between 5 Hz and 8 Hz. Comparisons of our results with those of other authors, which proposed valuations for compound frequencies, did only agree in part.
