    Notes: Abstract This paper deals with systems ofm polynomial equations inn unknown, which have only finitely many solutions. A method is presented which decomposes the solution set into finitely many subsets, each of them given by a system of type $$f_1 \left( {x_1 } \right) = 0,f_2 \left( {x_1 ,x_2 } \right) = 0, \ldots ,f_n \left( {x_1 , \ldots ,x_n } \right) = 0$$ . The main tools for the decomposition are from ideal theory and use symbolical manipulations. For the ideal generated by the polynomials which describe the solution set, a lexicographical Gröbner basis is required. A particular element of this basis allows the decomposition of the solution set. By a recursive application of these decomposition techniques the triangular subsystems are finally obtained. The algorithm gives even for non-finite solution sets often also usable decompositions.

    Notes: Abstract In order to further clarify the pathogenesis and clinical significance of MRI white matter abnormalities in treated hyperphenylalaninaemia (HPA), ten patients (seven type I HPA, two type II and one type III) underwent T2 relaxometry (n=8) and/or1H spectroscopy (n=7) in addition to conventional MR spin-echo imaging at 1.5 T. Two patients with severe MRI abnormalities had repeat examinations during and after a 6-to 8-month period of strict diet control. The clinical evaluation included a detailed neurological examination. In nine out of ten patients visual evoked potentials (VEP) were obtained parallel to the MR examination. MR imaging demonstrated typical symmetrical areas of prolonged T2 relaxation time predominantly in the posterior periventricular white matter in all but one of type I and II patients. There was no consistent relationship between MRI findings and time of diagnosis/initiation of therapy, IQ or visual evoked potential changes. MRI abnormalities tended to be more severe in patients with poor dietary control and high current plasma phenylalanine levels, whereas a normal MRI was found only in patients with plasma phenylalanine levels continuously below 0.36 mmol/l. There was marked regression of MRI abnormalities already after 3 months of strict diet control. T2 relaxometry showed a bi-exponential behaviour of T2 in the affected white matter, with a slow component of about 200–450 ms, indicating an increase in free (extracellular) water.1H spectroscopy revealed no signs of severe neuronal damage. We conclude, that the observed white matter changes in treated HPA probably represent reversible structural myelin changes rather than permanent demyelination.

    Notes: Abstract For healthy children up to 15 years of age, no data exist regarding water turnover as directly measured using stable isotope techniques. Water turnover was measured in 171 healthy children (88 girls, 83 boys, age: 6 weeks–15 years) whilst living in their normal environment. Water turnover was calculated from the equilibrium of2H2O concentration reached in the urine 2–3 h after an oral test load of 2 ml2H2O/kg and the subsequent elimination rate of2H2O. Daily water turnover decreased from 160 ml/kg (3 months), 100 ml/kg (12 months), 65 ml/kg (3 years) to 40 ml/kg at 15 years of age. Fluid intake was then calculated by subtracting the estimated metabolic water production from water turnover and this data was compared with recommended values. Our calculation of spontaneous daily fluid intake for these healthy children is within the recommended range during the 1st year of life, whereas for older children the recommendations exceed the spontaneous intake by a factor of 1,2–2.

    Notes: An-11-day old girl was seen with brownish nodular lesions scattered over (he body with emphasis on the face and seal). Several lesions had started lo involute. Tissue was studied by histopathology, immunohistopathology, routine electron microscopy, and immuno-electron microscopy using cryosubstitution and embedding in K4M. Immunohistopathology revealed that the cells of the dermal infiltrate were Langerhans cells. They expressed Leu 6 and HLA-DR. On routine electron microscopy no Birbeck granules were (bund in the dermal cells. Birbeck granules in epidermal Langerhans cells were deformed and often situated next to laminated dense bodies. The latter expressed Leu 6 and HLA-DR. on immuno-electron microscopy. It was concluded that congenital self-healing reticulohistiocytosis is a benign Langerhans cell disease in which Birbeck granules are transformed to laminated dense bodies and possibly degraded by lysosomal enzymes.

    Notes: Normal skin was cryoprotected by submerging it in a mixture of 30% dimethylformamide (DMF) in PBS or RPMI. Subsequently it was frozen in liquid propane gas. Cryosubstitution was carried out at −90°C by using methanol to which uranyl acetate or osmium tetroxide were added. The tissue was embedded in either Lowicryl K4M at −40°C or in Epon at +60°C. The- tissue was evaluated by its overall preservation of ultras-tructural details and by its labeling intensity alter incubation with either anti-clesmoglein or anti-type VII collagen monoclonal antibodies. The mixture of DMF and PBS caused an electron-dense precipitate within the cell. The overall morphology was better in Epon-embedded material than in K4M-embedclecl material. However, the labeling was best in K4M material. Regardless of whether the tissue was embedded in Epon or K4M, the addition of osmium tetroxide markedly reduced the degree of labeling.

    Avoidance of oxygen-poor zones by fish in the Elbe River (1991)

    Notes: For three selected weeks in July, August, and October 1985, catches from anchor net vessels at ten stations along the tidal Elbe River (northern Germany) were analyzed and related to oxygen conditions in the river. The oxygen concentrations decreased from an average of 6.6 ml/L in the estuary to an average of 1.4 mg/L upstream. Fish were found to be concentrated downstream from the low-oxygen zone and at the entrance to a shallow side arm of the main stream. Highest catches of eel were made where oxygen levels were in the range of 1.2–3 mg/L, highest catches of flounder at 3–4 mg/L, and highest catches of juvenile and adult smelt in areas with more than 5 mgO2/L. Such a situation enables fishermen to make extraordinarily high catches. It is concluded that despite high levels of toxicants, the tidal Elbe still offers living conditions adequate for the mass of fish species as long as there is a sufficient supply of oxygen.

    Notes: In 1985 and 1986 ichthyoplankton composition was studied during seven sampling series at 37 stations along the tidal Elbe and its tributary rivers between Hamburg harbour and the North Sea. The highest larval density was observed in May and April. No, or very few, larvae occurred from late summer to early spring. Smelt (59% on average of all samples) and twaite shad (20%) dominate in the freshwater region. Herring/sprat (17%) dominate in the estuary. All major spawning grounds are located along the southern shore. Smelt spawn further upstream 1 month earlier than twaite shad. Three percent of all larvae found were flounder. Most of them occurred upstream from the estuary in the R. Este and in other tributary rivers. It is not clear whether flounders are able to spawn in freshwater. Attention is drawn to the fact that an unknown but probably very high percentage of the ichthyoplankton is entrained by local power plants.

    Notes: Summary A study was carried out involving 134 neurotic-depressive inpatients (according to ICD-9) treated with cognitive behaviour therapy and in a subgroup additionally with antidepressants. Using standardized rating instruments, a large set of potential predictor variables was tested. After cross-validation according to the splithalf technique, only very few of these proved to be suitable as predictors for the main outcome criteria. These predictors included certain aspects of social functioning before index admission, intensity of depressive symptoms at admission and the degree of self-evaluated mood disturbances three weeks after admission. Several predictors known from the literature could not be reproduced in this study, demonstrating the well-known instability of most predictor findings. On the other side, the predictor profile of the neurotic-depressive patients was quite similar to that found in endogenous depressives, a result which might — together with other findings, such as the response of neurotic depressives to antidepressants — question the traditional subclassification of functional depressive states into these subgroups.
