Summary 52 patients with chronic non-steroid treated asthma were studied by X-ray determination of the hydroxyle apatite content of the spinal column. The results were assessed by comparison with standard values for age and sex. 1) In 16 cases (31%) there was an osteoporosis, one case in addition had a fracture of a vertebra. 2) The mean duration of the asthma in the osteoporosis patients was 21,1 years. Patients free from osteoporosis had had their asthma for an average of 9,4 years (P〈0,001). 3) No patient with osteoporosis was younger than 49 years. 45% of the osteoporosis cases were older than 60 years of age. 4) In women over 60 years of age there was an osteoporosis in 65%, in men over 60 years in 21% of the cases. 5) There existed no relation between the occurrence of osteoporosis and the use of isoprenaline.

Zusammenfassung Bei 52 Patienten mit chronischem Bronchialasthma, die nicht mit Corticoiden behandelt wurden, wurden röntgenologische Bestimmungen des Hydroxylapatitgehaltes der Wirbelsäule mit folgendem Ergebnis durchgeführt: 1. Bei 16 Kranken (31%) lag eine Osteoporose vor, in einem Fall zusammen mit Spontanfraktur eines Wirbelkörpers. 2. Die mittlere Erkrankungsdauer dieser Patienten an Asthma betrug 21,1 Jahre; die mittlere Erkrankungsdauer der osteoporosefreien Patienten betrug 9,4 Jahre. 3. Kein Osteoporosekranker war jünger als 49 Jahre. Der Anteil der Osteoporosefälle an der Gesamtheit der über 60jährigen betrug 45%. 4. Bei Frauen über 60 Jahren bestand eine Osteoporose in 65%, bei Männern in 21% der Fälle. 5. Der Verbrauch an Isoprenalin war ohne Einfluß auf die Osteoporosehäufigkeit.
