Notes: Abstract The effect of various inhibitive ions (hydroxide, citrate, stannate) for the corrosion of steel in concrete was studied by weight loss measurements, chronopotential studies, anodic polarization technique and compressive strength tests. The salient features of the investigation were: in 100% OPC as well as in OPC + fly ash (3:1 ratio) extracts the passivity of steel was readily destroyed even by the presence of 10 000 ppm of chloride. However in 100% OPC and also in OPC + fly ash (3:1 ratio) extracts containing inhibitive and complexing agents like hydroxide, citrate and stannate, the passivity of steel was maintained even in the presence of 30 000 ppm of chloride. The addition of inhibitive ions like hydroxide, citrate and stannate not only decreased the corrosion rate of steel in simulated concrete environments but also increased the compressive strength of mortars. Citrates, stannates and CaO are effective inhibitors of the corrosion of steel in concrete.

Notes: Summary Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) microspheres were used as an embolic agent to reduce the vascularity in eight patients with intracranial vascular tumours. Post embolization angiograms showed 30–60% reduction in the vascularity of the tumours. No patient developed any neurological complications in the immediate post-embolization period. These eight patients subsequently underwent surgery for the removal of their tumours. During surgery there was minimal blood loss and a good plane of cleavage was obtained between the tumour and the adjacent brain. The surgical specimens were examined histopathologically for the effects of PMMA. PMMA microspheres, in contrast to other cyano-acrylates — Isobutyl-2-cyano-acrylate (IBCA) — did not elicit either inflammatory reaction or mural angionecrosis within the wall of the embolised vessels. The histopathological studies suggest that PMMA microspheres are an inert material and can be used as an adjunct in the management of intracranial vascular tumours.

Notes: Summary 1. Unorthodox methods of approach appear to be responsible for the radical divergences in views regarding the identification of the various organelles in a budding yeast cell. 2. The problems of yeast cytology are analysed, and the necessity to distinguish the cytological behaviour of an aerobically growing culture from an anaerobic one is emphasized. 3. Photomicrographic proof for mitosis is offered in a purely aerobic strain of yeast having a pair of unequal chromosomes. 4. The chromatin mass seen at early prophase resolves itself into the pair of unequal metaphase chromosomes. These reproduce and the mother cell and bud regularly receive an unequal pair. 5. Evidence for somatic pairing and synapsis is presented. The reconstitution of the nucleus in the telophase takes place by an exact reversal of the stages leading to the metaphase thus proving chromosome continuity. 6. The cytological behaviour of the rare spontaneous autotetraploids arising in normal diploid cultures is illustrated and their significance in genetic investigations discussed. 7. A pictographic summary of the mitotic cycle is given.

Notes: Abstract 1. Previous work on the methods employed for the determination of the breeding season of shipworms is briefly reviewed. 2. The method adopted for studying the reproductive cycle by using the “gonad index” is described. 3. The reproductive cycle of Nausitora hedleyi is described in detail based on a study of the gonad index of different sexes collected at monthly intervals from the estuarine environment of Cochin harbour. 4. The fact that breeding is restricted as marked by seasonal activity is shown from the size and activity of the gonad during the different months of the year. 5. The environment, and the hydrographic conditions prevailing in the habitat of N. hedleyi in the Cochin harbour are described.

Notes: Summary The occurrence of phosphate-solubilizing fungi in coconut plantation soil types was investigated. The laterite, alluvial and clayey soils harboured more of the P-solubilizing fungi than the sandy soils. The isolated P-solubilizing fungi solubilized 26 to 74 per cent of the tricalcium phosphate in 5 to 15 days. The competitive saprophytic ability of the active P-solubilizing fungi in soil varied between the isolates. Eight fungi with high P-solubilizing capacity and high competitive saprophytic ability were recognised. They have better capacity to survive in soil and express their role in P-solubilization.

Notes: Abstract Species belonging to the genus Nausitora (Bivalvia - Teredinidae) are generally confined to brackish waters. In the Cochin backwaters, a tidal estuary on the southwest coast of India, this genus is represented by the species N. hedleyi Schepman. Fresh settlement of the species in the area is noticed only during the period of low salinity, though the species of found to exist, throughout the year. Tests conducted to ascertain the effect of salinity changes on the activity of the borer showed that though it can endure a wide range, the optimum salinity range for early development was from 11.24–14.54%.

Notes: Summary Clostridium thermocellum produced different levels of true cellulase (“Avicelase”) depending on the carbon source used for growth. In defined medium with fructose, the cellulase titer was seven times higher than with cells growing on cellobiose and four times higher than cells growing with glucose. During the lag phase on fructose, the differences were even more dramatic, i.e. 60 times higher than in cells growing on cellobiose and 40 times that of cells lagging or growing in glucose. In an attempt to detect factors that might contribute to these differences, we considered intracellular ATP, chemical potential (ΔpH), electrical potential (ΔY), proton motive force (Δp), growth rate, and rates of uptake of inorganic phosphate and sugars. We noted a direct correlation between cellulase production and intracellular ATP levels and an inverse relationship of cellulase production with ΔY and Δp values. It thus appears that cellulase is best produced by cells high in ATP and low in Dp and its electrical component DY. There was no obvious relationship between the cellulase titer and the other parameters. Although the physiological significance of such correlations is unknown, the data suggest that further investigation is warranted.

Notes: Abstract A method based on the sorption of99mTc in MEK on an acid alumina column has been investigated. A number of parameters as column dimension, amount of alumina, MEK volumes, etc. is found to affect the extent of adsorption and the final purity of99mTc solution. These parameters have been standardized and a method for rapid recovery of MEK-extracted99mTc has been developed. The final characteristics of the99mTc is found to conform to pharmacopoeia specification.
