Description / Table of Contents: Abstract After surgical operations delirium can occur as a serious and possible lethal complication in about 5–15% of patients. Additionally, risk factors such as old age, polymedication, organic and psychiatric diseases raise the incidence. After open-heart- and orthopedic surgery more than half of the patients are affected. Delirium has negative effects on postoperative mobilization and reconvalescence and prolongs treatment on the ward. It is discussed in the literature that delirium may induce dementia in older patients. The correction of metabolic- and electrolyte imbalances, as well as the therapy of neurologic and psychiatric diseases, belongs to prophylactic treatment. Environmental conditions which facilitate reorientation of the patient after operation have beneficial effects. Some success has been achieved by using the nootropic substance piracetam as a prophylactic. In acute treatment, the butyrophenon-neuroleptic haloperidol is the drug of choice. In delirium caused by intoxication with anticholinergic agents, physostigmin is indicated. Benzodiazepines, clonidine and clomethiazole are used in particular for the treatment of withdrawal delirium.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The role of Trasylol in the treatment of acute pancreatitis is still undetermined. In this study the influence of Trasylol on the secretoric function of the pancreas was investigated. The change of pancreatic secretion was not significant immediately after intravenous injection. 24–48 h later the volume of secretion as well as the activity of all enzymes was significantly diminished. The importance of this atropin-like effect of Trasylol for the treatment of the acute pancreatitis is discussed.

Notes: Abstract Seasonal occurrence, individual growth and development of population biomass of the scyphomedusa Aurelia aurita were studied in 1978–1979 in the western Baltic Sea. First ephyrae of the developing population appear in November, but the great majority are produced in April and May. On the average 0.09 medusae m-3 with a biomass of 25 g occur between July and September. The standing stock is below 10 mg from December to April. Growth is characterized by a stagnation period in winter and early spring, by rapid increase in early summer and by size reduction in autumn after release of gonadal products. The maximum monthly growth rate was observed in June, when the average diameter increased from 7 to 48 mm and the wet weight from 0.06 to 22.8 g. Mortality is low before maturation. Genetical determination, starvation and parasitization are discussed as causes for morphological reductions and finally for death in autumn.

Notes: Abstract The effects of two toxic polypeptides isolated from Anemonia sulcata Pennant (Anthozoa) were tested on Gadus morhua, Pleuronectes platess and Platichthys flesus. In tramuscular injections caused paralysis and death, with symptoms similar to those of death caused by lack of oxygen. In cod, the LD50 dose of Toxin II was 50 times higher chan that of Toxin I (Toxin I=6.9 mg/kg, Toxin II=0.14 mg/kg). Flatfish were less sensitive. The LD50 of Toxin II was 0.37 mg/kg for Platichthys flesus and 0.38 mg/kg for Pleuronectes platessa. Both toxins are less lethal to fishes than to crustaceans.

Notes: Summary Benoxaprofen (BP), a non-steroidal antiphlogistic drug causing skin and nail photoreactions, has been evaluated for photoactivity using three experimental techniques. In vivo in the mouse, BP was phototoxic in doses of 25 mg/kg in combination with UV-A 54 J. The phototoxic potency could be confirmed in vitro with the Candida albicans test. In vitro, using photohemolysis, BP showed a dose-dependent activity causing 40% hemolysis at a concentration of about 25 μg/ml with UV-a. Also, small UV-B doses caused red cell lysis with a moderate BP concentration. Preirradiation experiments showed that UV-A, but not UV-B, photoproducts could account for some of the activity. The action spectrum of BP photoactivity lies mainly in the UV-A, but may also extend into UV-B. Compared with chlorpromazine in vivo and in vitro, and with doxycycline in vivo, BP showed intermediate phototoxic activity.

Notes: Abstract This paper deals with systems ofm polynomial equations inn unknown, which have only finitely many solutions. A method is presented which decomposes the solution set into finitely many subsets, each of them given by a system of type $$f_1 \left( {x_1 } \right) = 0,f_2 \left( {x_1 ,x_2 } \right) = 0, \ldots ,f_n \left( {x_1 , \ldots ,x_n } \right) = 0$$ . The main tools for the decomposition are from ideal theory and use symbolical manipulations. For the ideal generated by the polynomials which describe the solution set, a lexicographical Gröbner basis is required. A particular element of this basis allows the decomposition of the solution set. By a recursive application of these decomposition techniques the triangular subsystems are finally obtained. The algorithm gives even for non-finite solution sets often also usable decompositions.

Notes: Abstract. The aim of our work was to determine the efficacy of turbo inversion recovery spin echo (TIRSE) pulse sequences in differentiating patients with normal and abnormal myelination. Twenty neurological normal children (aged 5 months to 12 years) as well as 65 children presenting clinically with neurologic developmental deficits (aged 2 months to 10 years) were examined using TIRSE, T1-weighted SE, and T2-weighted turbo SE pulse sequences. Contrast-to-noise-ratio (CNR) between myelinated white and gray matter was compared for the different pulse sequences. In addition, two readers analyzed all images qualitatively by consensus. The CNR values were significantly higher on TIRSE images as compared with conventional images (p 〈 0.05). Forty-two neurologically abnormal patients displayed a normal myelination on all sequences, whereas 23 showed an abnormal myelination. The TIRSE sequence provided a sensitive and specific depiction of an abnormal myelination in all of these patients. The TIRSE sequence provided additional information to conventional pulse sequences in determining myelination disorders in children, especially in children older than 2 years.

Notes: Abstract The conventional treatment of CAH with hydrocortisone (16–19 mg/m2 per day) and 9α-F-cortisol (just enough to normalise renin concentrations, started at 07:00 h) was inffective in suppressing the early morning rise of 17-OH-progesterone and in turn androgens in about 20% of our patients. The present work explored the effect of a modified dosage regimen of the drug in five patients. The schedule was: 03:00 h F 33%+9α-F-F 33%; 07:00 h F 30%; 12:00 h F 22%+9α-F-F 33%; 17:30 h F 15%+9α-F-F 33%. Monitored levels of circulating 17-OH-progesterone, testosterone, and individual urinary 17-ketosteroids showed significant improvement, which was not achieved by giving higher or later evening doses. Menarche was induced in two girls (bone age 15 years). The modified dosage schedule offers on the one hand the possibility of better management of CAH, and on the other, cuts down the risk of enhanced Cushing-like effects, which in animal models have been related frequently to dosage schedules not corresponding to the circadian rhythm. The difficulty of administering the drugs at 03:00 h should be overcome by the development of a late-releasing preparation.
