Notes: Abstract Seasonal occurrence, individual growth and development of population biomass of the scyphomedusa Aurelia aurita were studied in 1978–1979 in the western Baltic Sea. First ephyrae of the developing population appear in November, but the great majority are produced in April and May. On the average 0.09 medusae m-3 with a biomass of 25 g occur between July and September. The standing stock is below 10 mg from December to April. Growth is characterized by a stagnation period in winter and early spring, by rapid increase in early summer and by size reduction in autumn after release of gonadal products. The maximum monthly growth rate was observed in June, when the average diameter increased from 7 to 48 mm and the wet weight from 0.06 to 22.8 g. Mortality is low before maturation. Genetical determination, starvation and parasitization are discussed as causes for morphological reductions and finally for death in autumn.

Notes: Summary Benoxaprofen (BP), a non-steroidal antiphlogistic drug causing skin and nail photoreactions, has been evaluated for photoactivity using three experimental techniques. In vivo in the mouse, BP was phototoxic in doses of 25 mg/kg in combination with UV-A 54 J. The phototoxic potency could be confirmed in vitro with the Candida albicans test. In vitro, using photohemolysis, BP showed a dose-dependent activity causing 40% hemolysis at a concentration of about 25 μg/ml with UV-a. Also, small UV-B doses caused red cell lysis with a moderate BP concentration. Preirradiation experiments showed that UV-A, but not UV-B, photoproducts could account for some of the activity. The action spectrum of BP photoactivity lies mainly in the UV-A, but may also extend into UV-B. Compared with chlorpromazine in vivo and in vitro, and with doxycycline in vivo, BP showed intermediate phototoxic activity.

Notes: Abstract The case of an infant is described who at birth was already small and postnatally grew extremely slowly. At age 3 the girl's height was 65 cm, weight 5.6 kg, bone age 21 months. Basal plasma GH was 36–66 ng/ml, basal SM activity was rather high, being around 2.0 U/ml. RIA- and RRA-SM were also increased. Prolonged GH administration did not raise plasma SM. There was a tendency for hypoglycemic episodes in the presence of low insulin levels. Receptor studies with skin fibroblasts showed a diminution of the specific binding of SM-C by 50%. Apparently only the specific IGF-receptor is defective whereas the insulin receptor responds to the increased SM with hypoglycemia. The observation that the high plasma SM did not suppress the enhanced GH-secretion suggests that perhaps the hypothalamic IGF-receptor was also defective.

Notes: Summary In 11 healthy volunteers the kinetics of theophylline and the plasma levels and the urinary excretion of its metabolites were studied before and after treatment with erythromycin for 10 days. Theophylline was administered as an intravenous bolus injection (280 mg) followed by a constant intravenous infusion (23.8±4.1 mg/h) for 6 hours. The total clearance of theophylline at steady-state (63.4±9.9 vs 63.8±14.4 ml/min, before vs after erythromycin treatment) and the elimination half-life after cessation of the infusion (6.7±2.6 vs 7.5±1.8 h, before vs after treatment) did not change during the treatment with erythromycin. No difference in the formation of metabolites before and after treatment with erythromycin was detected; the findings in urine were 40.4±5.0 vs 42.1±5.4% 1,3-dimethyluric acid, 29.6±4.6 vs 30.1±5.9% 1-methyluric acid and 13.4±3.5 vs 12.5±2.2% 3-methylxanthine before and after erythromycin treatment, respectively. It is concluded that a clinically relevant interaction between erythromycin and theophylline does not occur.

Notes: Summary An adequate prognosis of schizophrenic psychoses cannot be made on the basis of single variables. Therefore prognostic scales combining prognostically relevant items should be tried. The prognostic value of the scale of Strauss and Carpenter, the predictive accuracy of which has been described in the Anglo-American literature, was tested in a 5-year follow-up study on patients with schizophrenic or similar psychoses. A high correlation was found between the total score and all outcome criteria. Although many single items reached a high prognostic relevance, the total score of the scale was superior.

Notes: Summary After their first suicide attempts 169 patients were compared to 109 repeated suicide attempters regarding sociodemographical, biographical, and psychopathological variables. The differences between the groups characterize the repeaters as persons with more broken-home situations in childhood and youth and with more tension and instability in private and occupational relationships. These patients received more psychiatric or psychotherapeutic treatment, were more often classified as suffering from a personality disorder or addiction and their prognosis was estimated less favourable. These findings are consistent with the results of other investigations. Questions of typological interpretation and practical consequences are discussed.
