Description: Given the important role of nitrogen input from livestock systems in terrestrial nutrient cycles and the atmospheric chemical composition, it is vital to have a robust estimation of the magnitude and spatiotemporal variation in manure nitrogen production and its application to cropland across the globe. In this study, we used the dataset from the Global Livestock Impact Mapping System (GLIMS) in conjunction with country-specific annual livestock populations to reconstruct the manure nitrogen production during 1860-2014. The estimated manure nitrogen production increased from 21.4 Tg N/yr in 1860 to 131.0 Tg N/yr in 2014 with a significant annual increasing trend (0.7 Tg N/ yr, p 〈 0.01). Changes in manure nitrogen production exhibited high spatial variability and concentrated in several hotspots (e.g., Western Europe, India, northeastern China, and southeastern Australia) across the globe over the study period. In the 1860s, the northern midlatitude region was the largest manure producer, accounting for ~52 % of the global total, while low-latitude regions became the largest share (~48 %) in the most recent 5 years (2010-2014). Among all the continents, Asia accounted for over one-fourth of the global manure production during 1860-2014. Cattle dominated the manure nitrogen production and contributed ~44 % of the total manure nitrogen production in 2014, followed by goats, sheep, swine, and chickens. The manure nitrogen application to cropland accounts for less than one-fifth of the total manure nitrogen production over the study period. The 5 arcmin gridded global dataset of manure nitrogen production generated from this study could be used as an input for global or regional land surface and ecosystem models to evaluate the impacts of manure nitrogen on key biogeochemical processes and water quality. To ensure food security and environmental sustainability, it is necessary to implement proper manure management practices on cropland across the globe.

Description: Excessive anthropogenic nitrogen (N) inputs to the biosphere have disrupted the global nitrogen cycle. To better quantify the spatial and temporal patterns of anthropogenic N enrichments, assess their impacts on the biogeochemical cycles of the planet and other living organisms, and improve nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) for sustainable development, we develop a comprehensive and synthetic dataset for anthropogenic N inputs to the terrestrial biosphere. This Harmonized Anthropogenic N Inputs (HaNi) dataset takes advantage of different data sources in a spatiotemporally consistent way to generate a set of high-resolution gridded N input products from the preindustrial to present (1860-2019). The HaNi dataset includes annual rates of synthetic N fertilizer, manure application/deposition, and atmospheric N deposition in cropland, pasture, and rangeland at 5-arcmin. Specifically, the N inputs are categorized, according to the N forms and the land use, as 1) NH4-N fertilizer applied to cropland, 2) NO3-N fertilizer applied to cropland, 3) NH4-N fertilizer applied to pasture, 4) NO3-N fertilizer applied to pasture, 5) manure N application on cropland, 6) manure N application on pasture, 7) manure N deposition on pasture, 8) manure N deposition on rangeland, 9) NHx-N deposition, and 10) NOy-N deposition. The total anthropogenic N (TN) inputs to global terrestrial ecosystems increased from 29.05 Tg N yr-1 in the 1860s to 267.23 Tg N yr-1 in the 2010s, with the dominant N source changing from atmospheric N deposition (before the 1900s) to manure N (the 1910s-2000s), and to synthetic fertilizer in the 2010s. The proportion of synthetic NH4-N fertilizer increased from 64% in the 1960s to 90% in the 2010s, while synthetic NO3-N fertilizer decreased from 36% in the 1960s to 10% in the 2010s. Hotspots of TN inputs shifted from Europe and North America to East and South Asia during the 1960s-2010s. Such spatial and temporal dynamics captured by the HaNi dataset are expected to facilitate a comprehensive assessment of the coupled human-earth system and address a variety of social welfare issues, such as climate-biosphere feedback, air pollution, water quality, and biodiversity.

Notes: Regular arrays of micro-pillars and nano-grooves structures on the silicon wafer arefabricated by using soft lithography, and the three dimension morphology of textured surface isobserved by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscope (AFM). Thestatic water contact angles are measured by using contact angle meter to characterize thewettabilities of these surfaces. To investigate how the presence of topography and the variations ofwettability affect the haemocompatibility of textured surface contacted with blood, differentpatterned surfaces are designed and fabricated, and blood platelet adhesion test is carried out onthese surfaces. The adhesion and coagulation of platelets are inspected by scanning electronmicroscopy (SEM). Experimental data presented in this paper indicate that different surfaceroughness and wettability are the important factors for blood platelet adhesion. The amount ofadsorbed blood platelet is low on textured surfaces, compared with that on the flat surface.Especially, there is no coagulation and activation on the surface with nanometer grooves. That is tosay, the superhydrophobic surface is apt to decrease blood platelet adhesion. The study suggests thatsurface with suitable wettabililty and textured structures exhibits superior blood compatibility

Notes: Abstract This paper proposes a theoretical analysis for the dynamic response of a rigid perfectly plastic simply supported beam with an imperfection in the midspan cross-section under uniform step, pulse, and impulsive loading when support is assumed to be free to move inward. The complete solutions for an entire dynamic response process are given and the relationship between the distribution of energy dissipated at plastic hinges and the parameter of imperfection is also discussed.

Notes: Molecular dynamics simulations and ab initio calculations, at the Hartree–Fock level and Møller–Plesset perturbation to the second order energy, have been performed to investigate the modeling of propane using nonlinear three-site pair potentials. Simulation results for the structure and thermodynamic properties of saturated liquid propane compare well with the experimental data when potential models are used in which the interaction sites are located at or close to the geometric centers of CH3 and CH2 groups. One of the empirical potentials has also been compared with the ab initio results for different molecular orientations. The three-site model favors stacked orientations whereas the ab initio propane dimer favors T orientation. This difference is due to the planar geometry of the model molecules. The effect of attractive forces on the structure and thermodynamic properties in the simulated liquid has also been studied and found to be small.

Notes: Frequency upconversion into green and red luminescence in erbium–ytterbium-codoped phosphate glass pumped with a 970 nm diode laser is presented. The red upconversion emission results from a two-photon excitation process. The green emission results from a two- or three-photon excitation process with the two-photon process dominating at low pumping power. Based on measurement of the excitation and emission spectra, a model of the three-photon excitation process has been developed. This model provides a good basis for explaining the effect of the three-photon process on the saturation of 1.54 μm laser power of Er, Yb-codoped phosphate glass laser. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract. The function and prognostic significance of the nm23 gene is controversial in colorectal cancer (CRC). The aim of this study was to determine if nm23 protein expression correlated with the subsequent development of liver metastasis. Paraffin-embedded sections of 30 metastasizing CRC primaries and their subsequently resected liver secondaries were compared with those of 28 nonmetastasizing CRCs, 20 adenomas, and 20 cases of normal colonic mucosa. Expression of nm23 protein, assayed by immunohistochemistry, was measured using a standard semiquantitative scaling system and compared with a microcomputer-based color video image analysis (VIA). There was good correlation between color VIA and semiquantitative evaluation of nm23 immunoreactivity, confirming the validity of quantitative analysis (Pearson’s r = 0.88; p 〈 0.001). Metastasizing CRC primaries and secondaries overexpressed nm23 protein when compared with the other clinical groups, particularly nonmetastasizing CRC (Student’s t -test, p 〈 0.001). Furthermore, more nm23 immunoreactivity was associated with a higher risk of death from CRC (log-rank test, p = 0.002). These results suggest that overexpression of nm23 is highly associated with liver metastases from CRC and reduced survival.

Notes: Summary The Elasto-Visco-Plastic Analysis for Rock Displacement of the Foundation Pit of a Water Power Plant In this paper a method used in the elasto-visco-plastic analysis is proposed. It has been employed for deformation analysis of the foundation pit of a large water power plant in China. The back analysis of this rock engineering problem shows that the relief of the rock initial stresses due to excavation and the rheological properties of the weak intercalations and the rock masses as well are the main factors which caused the large deformation of the foundation pit. The results from the calculations are coincided fairly well with the data measured and observed in situ.
