    Beschreibung: The fifth Workshop on Systematic Errors (WSE) in weather and climate models was hosted by Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) on under the auspices of the Working Group on Numerical Experimentation (WGNE), jointly sponsored by the Commission of Atmospheric Sciences of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP). This major event welcomed over 200 scientists from the weather and climate communities. The workshop primary goal was to increase the understanding of the nature and cause of systematic errors in numerical models across timescales. Out of 240 abstracts submitted to the workshop, 48 talks and 132 posters were presented.

    Beschreibung: The Iceland Greenland Seas Project (IGP) is a coordinated atmosphere–ocean research program investigating climate processes in the source region of the densest waters of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation. During February and March 2018, a field campaign was executed over the Iceland and southern Greenland Seas that utilized a range of observing platforms to investigate critical processes in the region, including a research vessel, a research aircraft, moorings, sea gliders, floats, and a meteorological buoy. A remarkable feature of the field campaign was the highly coordinated deployment of the observing platforms, whereby the research vessel and aircraft tracks were planned in concert to allow simultaneous sampling of the atmosphere, the ocean, and their interactions. This joint planning was supported by tailor-made convection-permitting weather forecasts and novel diagnostics from an ensemble prediction system. The scientific aims of the IGP are to characterize the atmospheric forcing and the ocean response of coupled processes; in particular, cold-air outbreaks in the vicinity of the marginal ice zone and their triggering of oceanic heat loss, and the role of freshwater in the generation of dense water masses. The campaign observed the life cycle of a long-lasting cold-air outbreak over the Iceland Sea and the development of a cold-air outbreak over the Greenland Sea. Repeated profiling revealed the immediate impact on the ocean, while a comprehensive hydrographic survey provided a rare picture of these subpolar seas in winter. A joint atmosphere–ocean approach is also being used in the analysis phase, with coupled observational analysis and coordinated numerical modeling activities underway.

    Beschreibung: The variance of a jet’s position in latitude is found to be related to its average speed: when a jet becomes stronger, its variability in latitude decreases. This relationship is shown to hold for observed midlatitude jets around the world and also across a hierarchy of numerical models. North Atlantic jet variability is shown to be modulated on decadal time scales, with decades of a strong, steady jet being interspersed with decades of a weak, variable jet. These modulations are also related to variations in the basinwide occurrence of high-impact blocking events. A picture emerges of complex multidecadal jet variability in which recent decades do not appear unusual. An underlying barotropic mechanism is proposed to explain this behavior, related to the change in refractive properties of a jet as it strengthens, and the subsequent effect on the distribution of Rossby wave breaking.

    Notizen: Spermine and spermidine enhance the binding of [3H](+)-5-methyl-10,11-dihydro-5H-dibenzo[a, d]cyclohepten-5,10-imine ([3H]MK-801) to N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors in membranes prepared from rat brain. These polyamines also enhance binding of [3H]MK-801 to NMDA receptors that have been solubilized with deoxycholate. Other polyamines selectively antagonize this effect, a finding indicating that the polyamine recognition site retains pharmacological and structural specificity after solubilization. In the presence of spermidine, an increase in the affinity of the solubilized NMDA receptor for [3H]MK-801 is observed. However, the rates of both association and dissociation of [3H]MK-801 binding to solubilized NMDA receptors are accelerated when assays are carried out in the presence of spermidine. When kinetic data are transformed, pseudo-first-order association and first-order dissociation plots are nonlinear in the presence of spermidine, an observation indicating a complex binding mechanism. Effects of spermidine on solubilized NMDA receptors are similar to effects previously described in studies of membrane-bound receptors. The data indicate that polyamines interact with a specific recognition site that remains associated with other components of the NMDA receptor complex after detergent solubilization.

    Notizen: Abstract: Developmental changes in the levels of N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) receptor subunit mRNAs were identified in rat brain using solution hybridization/RNase protection assays. Pronounced increases in the levels of mRNAs encoding NR1 and NR2A were seen in the cerebral cortex, hippocampus, and cerebellum between postnatal days 7 and 20. In cortex and hippocampus, the expression of NR2B mRNA was high in neonatal rats and remained relatively constant over time. In contrast, in cerebellum, the level of NR2B mRNA was highest at postnatal day 1 and declined to undetectable levels by postnatal day 28. NR2C mRNA was not detectable in cerebellum before postnatal day 11, after which it increased to reach adult levels by postnatal day 28. In cortex, the expression of NR2A and NR2B mRNAs corresponds to the previously described developmental profile of NMDA receptor subtypes having low and high affinities for ifenprodil, i.e., a delayed expression of NR2A correlating with the late expression of low-affinity ifenprodil sites. In cortex and hippocampus, the predominant splice variants of NR1 were those without the 5′ insert and with or without both 3′ inserts. In cerebellum, however, the major NR1 variants were those containing the 5′ insert and lacking both 3′ inserts. The results show that the expression of NR1 splice variants and NR2 subunits is differentially regulated in various brain regions during development. Changes in subunit expression are likely to underlie some of the changes in the functional and pharmacological properties of NMDA receptors that occur during development.

    Notizen: Measurements and simulations to determine the contributing nonlinear mechanisms in microwave photodetectors operated with high intrinsic region electric fields are presented. An important component of the nonlinear behavior is attributed to absorption in undepleted material adjacent to the depletion region, limiting the attainable device linearity. With as little as 10 nm of undepleted absorbing material, the second harmonic of a 5 GHz fundamental frequency at 1 mA of average detector current can be −60 dBc. Linearity improvements up to 50 dB should be possible if photodetectors can be fabricated with strictly depleted absorbing regions.
