Description / Table of Contents: Abstract Friction factors as well as heat and mass transfer coefficients in laminar boundary layer flow can be calculated analytically by integration of the boundary layer equations in a proper way. Integrals thus obtained can be evaluated approximately by introducing a Taylor expansion for the velocity profiles. Examples are given for plane and stagnation flow with and without suction or blowing of foreign gas. Friction factors and heat and mass transfer coefficients calculated in this way show to deviate from exact values only by few per cent.

Notes: The wetting characteristics of fine powders play an important role in a variety of processes. The most important way of characterising the wettability of a fluid/fluid/solid system is to measure the contact angle. This paper describes a relatively simple method for the determination of the contact angle on powdery materials. The technique involves the measurement of the dynamic contact angle which is formed when a liquid drop is placed on a horizontal porous surface. On the basis of the measured dynamic contact angle as a function of time an “apparent” static contact angle has been defined, which gives a measure of the wettability of porous solid systems by analogy with the wetting of non-porous solids. Determinations with glass beads and NaCl-powders as the test materials indicate that the measured value depends on the particle size of the powder, the porosity and the temperature. It was concluded that the capillary penetration of the liquid droplet into the porous media itself influences the wetting characteristics.

Notes: Bench-Scale experiments were carried out with the ternary mixture 2-propanol/water/glycerol. In a cylindrical vessel, the stirred and thermostated liquid was exposed to a preheated and either dry or humidified air stream. The mixture was evaporated either from a free surface or from the surface of a porous plate. On evaporating the mixture from a porous plate into a dry air stream, the less volatile component water escapes preferentially; in the case of evaporation from a free surface, water is retained in the mixture. In the former case, selectivity is liquid diffusion controlled, in the latter, the gas-side mass transfer and the thermodynamic equilibrium are the controlling mechanisms. On reducing the gas flow rate, the more volatile alcohol evaporates preferentially in both cases; the selectivity is controlled only by thermodynamic equilibrium. Humidification of the air stream with water vapour causes preferential evaporation of the alcohol at an increased rate. Furthermore, instabilities in the liquid boundary layer due to density gradients and surface tension effects may affect the selectivity of evaporation. Experimental results show that the selectivity of evaporation can be manipulated by choosing appropriate evaporation conditions. The theory, which applies the generalized Stefan-Maxwell equations to diffusion in the liquid, can describe these effects.

Notes: The influence of particle size dispersity on thermal conductivity of packed beds without fluid flow is investigated. For this purpose, new experimental data for bi- and polydispersed packings are presented and data from the literature reviewed. All data are tabulated. The results of numerical calculations carried out for regular arrangements of spheres are also discussed. The impact of particle size dispersity on thermal conductivity is shown to be primarily due to the change in bed porosity. Thus, prediction can be carried out in the same way as for monodispersed packings if based on the actual bed porosity. A model developed by Schlünder and co-workers is revised and recommended for practical application.

Notes: Design of Contact Dryers for Free Flowing Solids Loaded with Solvent Mixtures. Vacuum contact drying of free flowing granular material loaded with a binary volatile mixture (iso-propanol/water) has been studied experimentally in a bench scale disc dryer of 250 mm diameter. Particle diameters ranged from 1 to 5 mm, the pressure was 1250 Pa and the wall temperature was between 50°C and 180°C. Both the drying rate as well as the selectivity of the drying process could be predicted well by the previously developed so-called heat transfer penetration model together with vapor phase mass transfer correlations.
