    Notes: Abstract  In a first synoptic evaluation, the temporal and spatial distribution of bacterioplankton and chlorophyll-a were determined in the German Wadden Sea. Three surveys were undertaken in winter, spring, and summer of 1994 using up to eight ships simultaneously between the river Ems and Sylt island. Despite intensive hydrodynamic mixing of the Wadden Sea water, spatial gradients were obvious. The abundance of bacterioplankton ranged from 0.4 to 26×105 ml–1 and chlorophyll-a varied between 〈0.1 and 79 µg l–1. In winter, relatively homogeneous distribution patterns of both parameters with small gradients were found. Highest chlorophyll-a values connected with a highly patchy structure were observed in spring, while in summer both total chlorophyll-a values and the complexity of the distribution pattern had decreased. In contrast, bacterial numbers increased steadily from January to July with the highest bacterial densities and greatest patchiness observed in summer. Moreover, in some regions of the Wadden Sea, a trophic succession of algae as carbon producers and bacteria as consumers was evident. Correlation analysis verified the relationship between bacteria and chlorophyll a, indicating bottom-up control of bacterial abundance in the northern part of the German Wadden Sea. Since the observed regression slope is remarkably low (0.12–0.46) compared to literature values (0.5–0.8), we suggest that the link between phytoplankton and bacteria found here is a special characteristic of the Wadden Sea as a transition zone between the coastal region and the outer North Sea.

    Notes: Abstract The activity of microorganisms was investigated in sediment samples of the Norwegian Sognefjord at a 1260 m depth. The enzymatic potential (measured, using the cleavage of fluoresceindiacetate FDA) ranged between 11 and 29 nmol FDA cm−3 h−1. LabeledAnacystis sp. (Cyanobacteria) were degraded (measured as liberation of14C-labeled CO2) at a rate of 0.67–1.24% day−1. The assays were run at 1 atm and at 126 atm pressure. In both cases, activity was higher when samples were incubated under 1 atm than under simulated in-situ conditions. This indicates that the sediment community of the fjord is adapted only to a limited extent to the elevated pressure at the bottom. The results are compared and discussed with data from other deep marine environments.

    Notes: Abstract  Tidal variation of biological parameters was studied at three anchor stations in selected inlet channels of the northern German Wadden Sea in May and July 1994. Concentrations of bacteria, chlorophyll a and suspended matter as well as primary and bacterial production were assessed over a period of 25 h in the surface and in the bottom water. Diurnal variation in primary production was found both under in situ light conditions and under constant illumination. Tidal turbulence caused the introduction of detritus, bacteria and pigments from the sediment into the water column. The impact of sediment resuspension was most evident in the bottom water, leading to tidally oscillating bacterial production rates which were high during high stream velocity and low during the slack times. Estimations of the areal daily phytoplankton production and corresponding bacterial carbon demands were unbalanced. Primary production accounted for only 25–45% of the total bacterial carbon requirement. This discrepancy is due to the shallow euphotic depth in the Wadden Sea, allowing net primary production only in the upper 2–3 m of the water column, while the relatively high levels of bacterial activity do not show a vertical decline. Assuming that the specific biological activities in the water columns over the tidal flats are similar to those found in the inlet channels, it was found that production processes dominate in shallow areas whereas decomposition processes dominate in the deep channels. Moreover, the predominance of heterotrophic processes in the inlet channels means that additional organic carbon sources must contribute to the heterotrophic metabolism in the deep parts of the Wadden Sea, and that the horizontal flux of material is important in this turbid mesotidal ecosystem.

    Description: Cellbound and extracellular biosurfactants were detected by thin-layer chromatography, tensiometric measurements, blood agar lysis and their capability of stabilizing oil in water emulsions. Known trehalose lipids (RAPP et al. 1979, RISTAU et al. 1983) and one glucose lipid, formerly unknown, with excellent properties were isolated. Also emulsifying agents were found. They seemed to be high molecular weight substances. Mixtures of hydrocarbons containing aliphatics and aromatics were efficiently emulsified. Reduced activity after digestion by several proteases gives a first indication of the nature of the emulsifiers. Preliminary results with several marine microorganisms showed that most biogenic surfactants possess a good environmental compatibility (v. BERNEM 1984, LANG et al. 1986).

    Description: During the last decade several surface active substances produced by microorganisms (biogenic surfactants, biosurfactants) have been described. Most of them are glycolipids composed of a hydrophilic sugar and one ore more lipophilic corynomycolic acids. A better biodegradability and lower toxicity of biosurfactants should be expected, because of their biogenic origin. However, data in this regard are missing. This paper presents results of toxicity testing series, in which four synthetic surfactants, two commercial oil dispersants, and six biosurfactants have been examinated. The test systems were 1. bacterial growth inhibition. 2. microalgae growth inhibition. 3. microflagellate growth inhibition. 4. biodegradation rate, and 5. bioluminescence inhibition (Microtox test). The multiplication of bacteria was stimulated by surfactants, whilst that of microflagellates and microalgae was inhibited. This may be due to the metabolic usage of surfactants, especially biosurfactants, by the bacteria. The bioluminescence was very sensitive to surfactants. No toxicity could be detected with the glucoselipid GL, produced by the marine bacterium Alcaligenes sp. MMl. Most biosurfactants were degraded faster and possess higher EC50-values than synthetic dispersants.

    Description: The influence of increasing amounts of surfactants on the toxicity of hydrocarbons was determined using the bioluminescence inhibition test (Microtox test). Three biogenic and three synthetic surfactants were tested against the water-soluble fractions (WSF) of crude and weathered Ekofisk oil, phenol, and naphthalene. Surfactant concentrations below 100 mg litre−1 lowered the toxicity of the WSF, indicating an antagonistic interaction reducing the toxicities of surfactants and hydrocarbons. At concentrations greater than 100 mg litre−1 the toxicity rose again and was higher than the untreated WSF. The point of reversal seemed to be the critical micelle concentration, at which the formation of oil/water emulsions is possible.
