    Notes: This communication describes the diffusion of sulfur into Ga1−xAlxAs layers having various amounts of Al content. GaS and As in a weight ratio of 2:1 were used as the diffusion source. The GaS diffusion source was carefully selected via x-ray diffraction analysis. Sulfur diffusion was carried out in a sealed quartz ampoule at a temperature of 820 °C and in ambient arsenic at a vapor pressure of 1 atm. Ga1−xAlxAs layers of various x values were grown by liquid phase epitaxy. The Al content indicated by x was in the range of 0–0.3. For x values of 0, 0.08, 0.2, and 0.3, the surface concentrations and diffusion coefficients were found to be 1.0×1018, 3.8×1017, 2.0×1017, and 1.4×1011 cm−3, and 3.5×10−13, 2.0×10−12, 3.5×10−12, and 5.5×10−12 cm2/s, respectively. The carrier concentration profiles from the experimental results agree well with the theoretical profiles, which were calculated with the complementary error function solution. The activation energies of the diffusion coefficient in GaAs and Ga0.7Al0.3As were found to be about 4.7 and 2.5 eV, respectively. A smooth diffusion of sulfur was observed to occur without causing any surface damage. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract  Shipboard and shore-based investigation on siliceous and calcareous microfossil biostratigraphy, magneto-stratigraphy and tephrostratigraphy identified numerous datum events from the sedimentary sequences of Sites 1150 and 1151 drilled on the forearc basin of northern Japan by the Ocean Drilling Program Leg 186. Some 83 datum events were selected to construct new age–depth models for the sites. Based on the reliable magneto-stratigraphy from the Pleistocene to the Upper Miocene, which were correlated to the standard geomagnetic polarity timescale, and on excellent records of diatom and radiolarian biostratigraphy throughout the sequences, the shipboard age model was revised. Major revisions referred to stratigraphic position of the Miocene–Pliocene boundary that has been shifted more than 200 m downward in each sequence. The age–depth relations of the forearc sites represent drastic changes in the sedimentation rate—extremely high (40 cm/k.y. on average) in the Early Pliocene and low (less than 2 cm/k.y. on average) in the Middle Miocene—and several hiatuses exist throughout the sequence. The drastic changes can be related mostly to changes in diatom sedimentation and the tectonics of the Japanese Island Arc. Local ages for some foraminiferal, calcareous nannofossil and radiolarian bioevents are estimated from the age–depth models at each site. These newly calibrated bioevents and biozones as well as established diatom biostratigraphy are incorporated into the updated magneto-biochronologic timescale, which will contribute to an improvement in biochronologic accuracy of Neogene sediments in northern Japan and adjacent areas.

    Notes: Abstract  The Upper Cenozoic sedimentary sequences drilled at Sites 1150 and 1151, Ocean Drilling Program Leg 186, enabled establishment of radiolarian zonation and calibration of the age of bioevents in the forearc area of the northern Japan Islands. The sequences were divided into nine zones from the Pleistocene Botryostrobus aquilonaris Zone to the Upper Miocene Lipmanella redondoensis Zone at Site 1150, and 11 zones from the Pleistocene Stylatractus universus Zone to the Middle Miocene Dendrospyris? sakaii Zone at Site 1151. These zones correlate successfully with the studied sequences of many of deep-sea cores in the Northwest Pacific Ocean and with some sections of onshore Japan. Of 67 important radiolarian bioevents recognized during the study, 29 Pleistocene to Upper Miocene events were directly tied to the geomagnetic polarity time scale through the well-defined paleomagnetic polarity records, and 21 Upper Miocene events were calibrated based on the diatom biostratigraphy. Of these events, 24 geographically widespread events were selected to test synchroneity and usefulness as time-horizons within the mid-to-high latitude of the Northwest Pacific, involving eight other offshore and onshore sections. Examination showed that most of the zonal boundary events are synchronous within the considered region, and that many diachronous events, most of which are eliminated from the zonal scheme, are unreliable events linked to rare and sporadic occurrences of the species. Radiolarian biostratigraphy of the studied cores clearly indicates three major hiatuses in the Middle Pleistocene, Late Miocene and late Middle Miocene. The latter two hiatuses can be correlated to two global oceanic hiatuses, NH6 and NH3, respectively.

    Notes: This paper contains experimental results on the population of the 21S atom of HeI in the discharge plasma of a He+Xe gas mixture. The population measurement was made by the laser-induced fluorescence method with the laser light tuned to the HeI line of 5016 A(21S-31P). The fluorescence intensity of HeI lines was measured as a function of the mixture ratio of Xe to He gas. As the Xe gas was mixed, the fluorescence intensity was significantly reduced at pressures ranging from 0.2 to 1 Torr. Further, an increment of the discharge current made the population of the 21S atom increase more remarkably in the Xe-mixed gas than in the pure He. These behaviors were considered using the measured temperature and density of the electrons, and it was concluded that at 1-Torr the Penning collision of the 21S atom with Xe was effective and dominated the behavior of the 21S atom.

    Description: Benthic foraminifera provide essential information for paleobathymetric reconstructions. However, the modern distribution of benthic foraminifera, especially at depths below 1000 meters below sea level (mbsl), is still obscure in the offshore regions near Central and South America. To characterize the bathymetric scale in the eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean, we examined the depth distribution of benthic foraminifera using piston core samples taken off the coast of Costa Rica. Foraminiferal assemblages vary according to water depth: 1) U1 (mainly composed of Ammonia beccarii, Cancris sagra, Elphidium tumidum, Hanzawaia concentrica, Pseudononion basispinata, and Planulina exorna) represent inner shelf faunas (shallower than 50 mbsl). 2) U2 (mainly composed of Ammobaculites foliaceus, Bolivina striatula, Cassidulina minuta, Hanzawaia concentrica, Uvigerina incilis, Bulimina denudata, and Cancris sagra) is correlated with mid-shelf depth assemblages, from 50 to 100 mbsl. 3) U3 (mainly composed of Uvigerina incilis, Hanzawaia concentrica, Angulogerina semitrigona, Bolivina acuminata, Bolivina bicostata, and Cibicorbis inflatus) is assigned to outer shelf assemblages from 100 to 200 mbsl. 4) U4 (mainly composed of Bolivina humilis, Bolivina seminuda, Bolivina subadvena, Cassidulina tumida, Epistominella obesa, Angulogerina carinata, and Cibicorbis inflatus) is the upper bathyal faunas (200–600 mbsl). 5) U5 (mainly composed of Brizalina argentea, Uvigerina peregrina, Uvigerina auberiana, Brizalina seminuda, Bulimina striata, Epistominella smithi and Globocassidulina subglobosa) is the mid-bathyal faunas (600–1000 mbsl). 6) U6 (mainly composed of Uvigerina auberiana, Uvigerina peregrina, Brizalina argentea, Bulimina mexicana, Cassidulina carinata, Epistominella smithi, and Lenticulina cushmani) represents the lower bathyal assemblage (1000–2000 mbsl). 7) U7 (mainly composed of Uvigerina auberiana, Brizalina argentea, and Eubuliminella tenuata) represent upper abyssal faunas (2000–3000 mbsl). 8) U8 (mainly composed of Glomospira sp. A, Lagenammina arenulata, Chilostomella oolina, Hoeglundina elegans, Melonis barleeanum, Nonion affine, Oridorsalis umbonatus, Pullenia bulloides, and Uvigerina proboscidea) is characterized by deep-water cosmopolitan faunas (deeper than 3000 mbsl). On the basis of a comparison with several environmental parameters, dissolved oxygen concentrations are likely to be the most effective factor controlling foraminiferal depth distributions in the eastern equatorial Pacific especially below the oxygen minimum zone (OMZ). Around OMZ, nitrate concentration also might be related with the benthic assemblage due to the nitrate respiration.

    Description: Integrated Ocean Drilling Program Expedition 320/321, "Pacific Equatorial Age Transect" (Sites U1331–U1338), was designed to recover a continuous Cenozoic record of the equatorial Pacific by coring above the paleoposition of the Equator at successive crustal ages on the Pacific plate. These sediments record the evolution of the equatorial climate system throughout the Cenozoic. As we gained more information about the past movement of plates and when in Earth's history "critical" climate events took place, it became possible to drill an age transect ("flow-line") along the position of the paleoequator in the Pacific, targeting important time slices where the sedimentary archive allows us to reconstruct past climatic and tectonic conditions. The Pacific Equatorial Age Transect (PEAT) program cored eight sites from the sediment surface to basement, with basalt aged between 53 and 18 Ma, covering the time period following maximum Cenozoic warmth, through initial major glaciations, to today. The PEAT program allows the reconstruction of extreme changes of the calcium carbonate compensation depth (CCD) across major geological boundaries during the last 53 m.y. A very shallow CCD during most of the Paleogene makes it difficult to obtain well-preserved carbonate sediments during these stratigraphic intervals, but Expedition 320 recovered a unique sedimentary biogenic sediment archive for time periods just after the Paleocene/Eocene boundary event, the Eocene cooling, the Eocene–Oligocene transition, the "one cold pole" Oligocene, the Oligocene–Miocene transition, and the middle Miocene cooling. Expedition 321, the second part of the PEAT program, recovered sediments from the time period roughly from 25 Ma forward, including sediments crossing the Oligocene/Miocene boundary and two major Neogene equatorial Pacific sediment sections. Together with older Deep Sea Drilling Project and Ocean Drilling Program drilling in the equatorial Pacific, we can delineate the position of the paleoequator and variations in sediment thickness from ~150°W to 110°W longitude.

    Description: Atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations and climate are regulated on geological timescales by the balance between carbon input from volcanic and metamorphic outgassing and its removal by weathering feedbacks; these feedbacks involve the erosion of silicate rocks and organic-carbon-bearing rocks. The integrated effect of these processes is reflected in the calcium carbonate compensation depth, which is the oceanic depth at which calcium carbonate is dissolved. Here we present a carbonate accumulation record that covers the past 53 million years from a depth transect in the equatorial Pacific Ocean. The carbonate compensation depth tracks long-term ocean cooling, deepening from 3.0-3.5 kilometres during the early Cenozoic (approximately 55 million years ago) to 4.6 kilometres at present, consistent with an overall Cenozoic increase in weathering. We find large superimposed fluctuations in carbonate compensation depth during the middle and late Eocene. Using Earth system models, we identify changes in weathering and the mode of organic-carbon delivery as two key processes to explain these large-scale Eocene fluctuations of the carbonate compensation depth.

    Description: Aberrant Zn2+ homeostasis is associated with dysregulated intracellular Ca2+ release, resulting in chronic heart failure. In the failing heart a small population of cardiac ryanodine receptors (RyR2) displays sub-conductance-state gating leading to Ca2+ leakage from sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) stores, which impairs cardiac contractility. Previous evidence suggests contribution of RyR2-independent Ca2+ leakage through an uncharacterized mechanism. We sought to examine the role of Zn2+ in shaping intracellular Ca2+ release in cardiac muscle. Cardiac SR vesicles prepared from sheep or mouse ventricular tissue were incorporated into phospholipid bilayers under voltage-clamp conditions, and the direct action of Zn2+ on RyR2 channel function was examined. Under diastolic conditions, the addition of pathophysiological concentrations of Zn2+ (≥2 nm) caused dysregulated RyR2-channel openings. Our data also revealed that RyR2 channels are not the only SR Ca2+-permeable channels regulated by Zn2+. Elevating the cytosolic Zn2+ concentration to 1 nm increased the activity of the transmembrane protein mitsugumin 23 (MG23). The current amplitude of the MG23 full-open state was consistent with that previously reported for RyR2 sub-conductance gating, suggesting that in heart failure in which Zn2+ levels are elevated, RyR2 channels do not gate in a sub-conductance state, but rather MG23-gating becomes more apparent. We also show that in H9C2 cells exposed to ischemic conditions, intracellular Zn2+ levels are elevated, coinciding with increased MG23 expression. In conclusion, these data suggest that dysregulated Zn2+ homeostasis alters the function of both RyR2 and MG23 and that both ion channels play a key role in diastolic SR Ca2+ leakage.
