    Description: Within Europe there are more than 380 Ocean Bottom Seismometers (OBS) distributed across 10 instrument parks in 6 countries. At least 120 of these OBS are wideband or broadband, over 260 can be deployed for at least 6 months at a time and 140 for at least one year. New parks are planned in two other European countries, which should add over 70 OBSs to this "fleet". However, these parks are under the control of individual countries or universities and hence to date this has made it difficult to organize large-scale experiments, especially for seismologists without marine experience. There has recently been an initiative to coordinate the use of these distributed instruments and their data products, to encourage large-scale experiments, possibly with onshore and offshore components, by seismologists who have not necessarily used OBSs before. The ongoing or planned developments include: Helping scientists with marine-specific formalities such as ship requests; clearer explanations of the noise floors of OBS instrumentation; improved clarity of instrument pricing and availability; standardized data output formats and data validation; and archiving in established seismological data centers. These efforts should allow improved experiment design in scientifically interesting regions with an offshore component and an easier, clearer way to organize large-scale, multi-country experiments. We will present details of this initiative to help organize large-scale experiments, the particularities of OBS sensors and marine deployments, the available instrumentation and new developments.

    Description: The Indochina block is important to our understanding of the extrusion model as a consequence of the Indo-Eurasia collision. The lithospheric structure of this block, however, remains obscured due to a lack of sufficient instrumentation for high resolution seismic imaging. We present a shear velocity model derived from Rayleigh wave phase velocity tomography using data from recently deployed seismic networks in this region. Our inversion results for lithospheric structure show strong correlations with tectonic history in this block. A prominent slow-velocity anomaly (5 per cent) is observed in northern Indochina along the Ailao Shan-Red River (ASRR) shear zone including Chuxiong basin, Lanping-Simao fold belt and Thailand rift basin, which has seen extensive deformation events since Eocene. The Khorat Plateau basin is characterized by thick continental keel type lithosphere, consistent with palaeomagnetic and geological observations indicating this basin has experienced much less deformation than the surrounding regions. Additionally, our inversion imaged a sharp, lithospheric-scale velocity contrast across the southeastern segment of ASRR, indicative of a thin and thus relatively weak lithosphere southwest of Red River Fault. The thin lithosphere, low asthenospheric seismic velocities we observe and the average crustal thicknesses in the region suggest that the topography high is dynamically supported by upwelling asthenosphere rather than thickening of the crust/lithosphere. Based on the occurrence of Palaeogene volcanism and its timing, we prefer an explanation of thinning of the lithosphere and allowing a throughgoing fault rather than emplacement of a thin terrane to explain the thin lithosphere. Therefore, the anomalously thin lithosphere between Khorat Plateau and the ASRR in conjunction with other geological observations is generally consistent with the extrusion model for Indochina, which requires localization of lithospheric deformation around tectonic blocks.

    Description: Thick, rigid continents move over the weaker underlying mantle, although geophysical and geochemical constraints on the exact thickness and defining mechanism of the continental plates are widely discrepant. Xenoliths suggest a chemical continental lithosphere ~175 kilometers thick, whereas seismic tomography supports a much thicker root (〉250 kilometers) and a gradual lithosphere-asthenosphere transition, consistent with a thermal definition. We modeled SS precursor waveforms from continental interiors and found a 7 to 9% velocity drop at depths of 130 to 190 kilometers. The discontinuity depth is well correlated with the origin depths of diamond-bearing xenoliths and corresponds to the transition from coarse to deformed xenoliths. At this depth, the xenolith-derived geotherm also intersects the carbonate-silicate solidus, suggesting that partial melt defines the plate boundaries beneath the continental interior.

    Description: The Costa Rica–Nicaragua subduction zone shows systematic along strike variation in arc chemistry, geology, tectonics and seismic velocity and attenuation, presenting global extremes within a few hundred kilometres. In this study, we use teleseismic and ambient noise derived surface wave tomography to produce a 3-D shear velocity model of the region. We use the 48 stations of the TUCAN array, and up to 94 events for the teleseismic Rayleigh wave inversion, and 18 months of continuous data for cross correlation to estimate Green's functions from ambient noise. In the shallow crust (0–15 km) we observe low-shear velocities directly beneath the arc volcanoes (〈3 km s –1 ) and higher velocities in the backarc of Nicaragua. The anomalies below the volcanoes are likely caused by heated crust, intruded by magma. We estimate crustal thickness by picking the depth to the 4 km s –1 velocity contour. We infer 〉40-km-thick crust beneath the Costa Rican arc and the Nicaraguan Highlands, thinned crust (~20 km) beneath the Nicaraguan Depression, and increasing crustal thickness in the backarc region, consistent with receiver function studies. The region of thinned, seismically slow and likely weakened crust beneath the arc in Nicaragua is not localizing deformation associated with oblique subduction. At mantle depths (55–120 km depth) we observe lower shear velocities (up to 3 per cent) beneath the Nicaraguan arc and backarc than beneath Costa Rica. Our low-shear velocity anomaly beneath Nicaragua is in the same location as a low-shear velocity anomaly and displaced towards the backarc from the high V P / V S anomaly observed in body wave tomography. The lower shear velocity beneath Nicaragua may indicate higher melt content in the mantle perhaps due to higher volatile flux from the slab or higher temperature. Finally, we observe a linear high-velocity region at depths 〉120 km parallel to the trench, which is consistent with the subducting slab.

    Description: SS precursors are a powerful tool for interrogating upper-mantle discontinuity structure. Some of these discontinuities may be defined fully or partially by a variation in anisotropy with depth. Therefore, a careful evaluation of SS precursor waveform predictions from anisotropic discontinuities is required. Here, we perform synthetic waveform modelling to evaluate the potential for using SS precursors to constrain anisotropic discontinuities. We investigate SS precursor amplitudes from models with azimuthally anisotropic discontinuities with assumed hexagonal symmetry. We demonstrate that SS precursor polarity variations are robust across a wide range of earthquake source polarizations for our anisotropic models. While polarity variations are not unique among all potential two-layer models with anisotropic discontinuities, other observables, such as the relative arrival time of the precursor and tectonic settings, may be used to constrain anisotropic structure. We discuss implications for previous imaging of upper-mantle discontinuities that may be anisotropic, such as the Lehmann discontinuity, and discontinuities in depth range of the lithosphere–asthenosphere boundary beneath the Pacific.

    Description: Fifty years after plate tectonic theory was developed, the defining mechanism of the plate is still widely debated. The relatively short, simple history of young ocean lithosphere makes it an ideal place to determine the property that defines a plate, yet the remoteness and harshness of the seafloor have made precise imaging challenging. We use S -to- P receiver functions to image discontinuities beneath newly formed lithosphere at the Juan de Fuca and Gorda Ridges. We image a strong negative discontinuity at the base of the plate increasing from 20 to 45 km depth beneath the 0- to 10-million-year-old seafloor and a positive discontinuity at the onset of melting at 90 to 130 km depth. Comparison with geodynamic models and experimental constraints indicates that the observed discontinuities cannot easily be reconciled with subsolidus mechanisms. Instead, partial melt may be required, which would decrease mantle viscosity and define the young oceanic plate.

    Description: While most oceanic volcanism is associated with the passive rise of hot mantle beneath the spreading axes of mid-ocean ridges (MOR), volcanism occurring off-axis reflects intraplate upper-mantle dynamics and composition, yet is poorly understood. Off the south East Pacific Rise (SEPR), volcanism along the Pukapuka, Hotu-Matua, and Sojourn ridges has been attributed to various mechanisms, but none can reconcile its spatial, temporal, and geochemical characteristics. Our three-dimensional numerical models show that asthenospheric shear can excite upwelling and decompression melting at the tip of low-viscosity fingers that are propelled eastward by vigorous sublithospheric flow. This shear-driven upwelling is able to sustain intraplate volcanism that progresses toward the MOR, spreads laterally close to the axis, and weakly continues on the opposite plate. These predictions can explain the anomalously fast eastward progression of volcanism, and its spatial distribution near the SEPR. Moreover, for a heterogeneous mantle source involving a fertile component, the predicted systematics of volcanism can explain the geochemical trend along Pukapuka and the enriched anomaly of SEPR mid-oceanic ridge basalt at 16°–20.5°S. Our study highlights the role of horizontal asthenospheric flow and mantle heterogeneity in producing linear chains of intraplate volcanism independent of a (deep-rooted) buoyancy source.

    Description: We use a backprojection method to determine dominant directions of ocean infragravity waves from 60–200 s period from cross correlations between 5 ocean bottom differential pressure gauges located off the coast of Sumatra. We observe infragravity waves arriving from all directions, but there is a dominant source direction that represents coherent propagation along the coast from the southeast or from the south. This study demonstrates the effectiveness of our projection technique, which may be applied to past and future seismic data to improve models of ocean infragravity wave generation and tsunami propagation
