Description: The Kuroshio Current (KC) is the northward branch of the North Pacific subtropical gyre (NPG) and exerts influence on the exchange of physical, chemical, and biological properties of downstream regions in the Pacific Ocean. Resolving long-term changes in the flow of the KC water masses is, therefore, crucial for advancing our understanding of the Pacific's role in global ocean and climate variability. Here, we reconstruct changes in KC dynamics over the past 20 ka based on grain-size spectra, clay mineral, and Sr–Nd isotope constraints of sediments from the northern Okinawa Trough. Combined with published sediment records surrounding the NPG, we suggest that the KC remained in the Okinawa Trough throughout the Last Glacial Maximum. Together with Earth-System-Model simulations, our results additionally indicate that KC intensified considerably during the early Holocene (EH). The synchronous establishment of the KC “water barrier” and the modern circulation pattern during the EH highstand shaped the sediment transport patterns. This is ascribed to the precession-induced increase in the occurrence of La Niña-like state and the strength of the East Asian summer monsoon. The synchronicity of the shifts in the intensity of the KC, Kuroshio extension, and El Niño/La Niña-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) variability may further indicate that the western branch of the NPG has been subject to basin-scale changes in wind stress curl over the North Pacific in response to low-latitude insolation. Superimposed on this long-term trend are high-amplitude, large century, and millennial-scale variations during last 5 ka, which are ascribed to the advent of modern ENSO when the equatorial oceans experienced stronger insolation during the boreal winter.

Description: The relative importance of north–south migrations of the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) versus El Niño-Southern Oscillation and its associated Pacific Walker Circulation (PWC) variability for past hydrological change in the western tropical Pacific is unclear. Here we show that north–south ITCZ migration was not the only mechanism of tropical Pacific hydrologic variability during the last millennium, and that PWC variability profoundly influenced tropical Pacific hydrology. We present hydrological reconstructions from Cattle Pond, Dongdao Island of the South China Sea, where multi-decadal rainfall and downcore grain size variations are correlated to the Southern Oscillation Index during the instrumental era. Our downcore grain size reconstructions indicate that this site received less precipitation during relatively warm periods, AD 1000–1400 and AD 1850–2000, compared with the cool period (AD 1400–1850). Including our new reconstructions in a synthesis of tropical Pacific records results in a spatial pattern of hydrologic variability that implicates the PWC.

Notes: A computer simulation study of a two-dimensional two-component resistor network model is presented. The model is constructed to elucidate the relationship between interfacial dynamics and formation of porous structures. The interfacial dynamics, which are stochastic in nature, have been studied and the effect of both global and regional characteristics in interfacial dynamics on the resulting morphologies has been investigated. In the simulation, the advancing interface exhibits either an unstable front as dictated by the Mullins–Sekerka instability, or a stable one that is roughened by kinetic noise. The relevance of the simulation to the experimental observations of porous silicon formation is demonstrated and the implications are discussed.

Notes: In the classical q-deformed oscillators system, the Poisson bracket realizations of the quantum enveloping algebras of An−1 and Cn types are given in the symplectic space (V,Ω) (without deformation). When the oscillators system is canonically quantized, the Lie bracket realizations of the quantum enveloping algebras of An−1 and Cn types are obtained. The Hopf structures of these quantum enveloping algebras are supplied.

Notes: Investigation of the attrition of agglomerates is very important for assessing the agglomerate strength, compaction characteristics, and quality control. A one-term exponential attrition index model and the Hausner ratio were used to study the effects of agglomerate size and water activity on the attrition kinetics of some selected agglomerated food powders. It was found that the agglomerate size and water activity played significant roles in affecting the attrition: the larger the agglomerate size and the higher the water activity, the higher the attrition index under the same tap number. The Hausner ratio was well correlated with the attrition index at high tap numbers and might be used as a simple index to evaluate attrition severity for agglomerates. Knowing the effects of agglomerate size and water activity is very useful to minimize the attrition phenomenon during the handling and processing of agglomerated powders.

Notes: Three cheeses were treated by (1) blast, (2) precooling plus blast, (3) liquid nitrogen and (4) precooling plus liquid nitrogen freezing methods. Mozzarella I and Cheddar cheeses treated by all methods had lower shear strength than their controls, excepting Mozzarella I treated by (1) was similar to its control. Mozzarella II treated by (1) and (2) had higher shear strength than its control but by (3) and (4) it had less. The failure stresses of Cheddar and Mozzarella I cheeses treated by (1) and (2) were significantly lower than their controls, while treated Mozzarella II had opposite results. Mozzarella I treated by (2) had meltability similar to its control and by (1) had lower meltability. Mozzarella II meltability was significantly reduced by (1) and (2). Stretchability was greatly improved using both methods for Mozzarella I but not for Mozzarella II. Cryo-stage Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) showed that the microstructural differences caused by (1) and (2) were apparent in Cheddar and Mozzarella II but not in Mozzarella I.

Notes: Summary Auditory sensitivity was determined for the oscar, Astronotus ocellatus, a cichlid fish that has no known structural specializations to enhance hearing. Trained A. ocellatus behaviorally responded to sound stimuli from 200 Hz to 800 Hz with best sensitivity of 18 dB (re: 1 μbar) to 21 dB for frequencies between 200 and 400 Hz. This is significantly poorer than hearing sensitivity for fish classified as hearing specialists, but well within the range of hearing capabilities reported for non-specialist teleost species.

Notes: [Auszug] Abscisic acid (ABA) is a vital phytohormone that regulates mainly stomatal aperture and seed development, but ABA receptors involved in these processes have yet to be determined. We previously identified from broad bean an ABA-binding protein (ABAR) potentially involved in stomatal signalling, the ...

Notes: The microstructural evolution of AZ61 semi-solid magnesium alloy during semi-solidremelting process was studied in this paper. The semi-solid billet was fabricated by strain-inducedmelt activation (SIMA) method. The results showed that the initial semi-solid grains melt mainlythrough coalescence. With the prolongation of isothermal holding time, the grains grew up andspheroidized, in which the mean diameter of grain and liquid volume fraction increased. In themeantime, the higher the holding temperature, the faster the grain grew and spheroidized. Thesuitable reheating temperature of AZ61 semi-solid magnesium alloy was 592[removed info]. The samples weresusceptible to serious deformation beyond 597[removed info]
