    Notes: Silver and Ag-Pd alloy are cofired with BaTiO3-based dielectrics during the manufacturing of capacitors. The diffusion of silver into BaTiO3 during sintering is very slow. However, the vapor pressure of silver is high at temperatures greater than the melting point of silver (960°C). The effect of the evaporation of silver during the sintering with BaTiO3 at 1200°, 1250°, and 1290°C is investigated in the present study. The silver vapor can transport through the pore channel of the dielectrics to a distance of a few hundred micrometers. The melting point of Ag-Pd alloy is higher than that of silver; therefore, the transportation of silver vapor from Ag-Pd alloy is hardly observed at temperatures 〉1200°C.

    Notes: Kaolin undergoes a series of phase changes on heating to elevated temperature, proceeding through kaolin, metakaolin, γ-Al2O3 spinel, and mullite. The morphologic evolution of the kaolin–mullite reaction series was investigated in the present study. A highly textured kaolin green body was prepared by a tape-casting technique, and the morphology evolution from kaolin flakes to mullite aciculars on firing from 450° to 1600°C was then monitored using X-ray diffractometry and scanning electron microscopy. Equiaxed mullite nuclei first appeared at 1000°C; the aspect ratio of the mullite grains then increased with increased firing temperature. The mullite aciculars rearranged their orientation in a glassy phase until they impinged on each other. A highly textured mullite specimen was prepared by firing the kaolin tape at a temperature 〉1500°C.

    Notes: Silver and its alloys frequently are used as electrode material for BaTiO3-based dielectrics. In the present study, a small amount of fine silver particles have been intimately mixed with BaTiO3 powder. The sintering and grain-growth behavior of the silver-doped BaTiO3 in air are investigated. The solubility of silver in BaTiO3, as revealed by lattice-parameter measurement, electrical measurement, and electron probe microanalysis, is 〈300 ppm. The densification of BaTiO3 is slowed slightly by the addition of silver inclusions. However, the presence of a small amount (〈0.3 wt%) of silver increases the amount and size of abnormal grains. When the silver content is 〉0.3 wt%, the grain growth of BaTiO3 then is prohibited by the silver inclusions.

    Notes: Manganese oxide powders were prepared by spray pyrolysis from manganese acetatesolution with various pyrolysis temperatures and directly collected via high-voltage electrostaticdeposition technique (ESD). The as-prepared powders were coated onto graphite substrates byelectrophoretic deposition technique (EPD).     Notes: Summary The virG gene of the Agrobacterium tumefaciens Ti plasmid pTiBo542 has previously been reported to elicit stronger vir gene expression than its counterpart in the pTiA6 plasmid, a property we call the “superactivator” phenotype. The DNA sequence of the pTiBo542 virG gene was determined and compared to that of the pTiA6 gene. The DNA sequences of these genes differ at 16 positions: two differences are in the promoter regions, 12 are in the coding regions, and two are in the 3′ untranslated regions. The 3′ end of the pTiA6 virG gene also contains a probable insertion sequence that is not found downstream of the pTiBo542 gene. The base pair differences in the two coding regions result in only two amino acid differences, both in the amino-terminal halves of the proteins. Five hybrid virG genes were constructed and used to activate the expression of a virB::lacZ gene fusion. Differences in the coding regions of these genes accounted for most of the superactivator phenotype, while differences at the promoter and 3′ untranslated regions also contributed. These findings suggest that the properties of these VirG proteins and their quantities are important for vir gene induction, and also suggest a long-term selective pressure for mutations contributing to differences between these two genes.

    Description: To systematically quantify the production, consumption and migration of methane along a continental margin, 210 sediment cores were collected from offshore southwestern Taiwan and analyzed for their gas and aqueous geochemistry. These data, combined with published results, were used to calculate the diffusive methane fluxes across different geochemical transitions and to develop scenarios of mass balance to constrain deep microbial and thermogenic methane production rates within the accretionary prism. The results showed that methane diffusive fluxes ranged from 2.71 × 10 −3 to 2.78 × 10 −1 and from ‒1.88 × 10 −1 to 3.97 mmol m −2 d −1 at the sulfate-methane-transition-zone (SMTZ) and sediment-seawater interfaces, respectively. High methane fluxes tend to be associated with structural features, suggesting a strong structural control on the methane transport. A significant portion of ascending methane (〉50%) is consumed by anaerobic oxidation of methane at the SMTZ at most sites, indicating effective biological filtration. Gas compositions and isotopes revealed a transition from the predominance of microbial methane in the passive margin to thermogenic methane at the upper slope of the active margin and onshore mud volcanoes. Methane production and consumption at shallow depths were nearly offset with a small fraction of residual methane discharged into seawater. The flux imbalance arose primarily due to the larger production of methane through deep microbial and thermogenic processes at a magnitude of 1,512 – 43,096 Tg Myr −1 methane and could be likely accounted for by the sequestration of methane into hydrate forms, and clay absorption.
