Description: Given the important role of nitrogen input from livestock systems in terrestrial nutrient cycles and the atmospheric chemical composition, it is vital to have a robust estimation of the magnitude and spatiotemporal variation in manure nitrogen production and its application to cropland across the globe. In this study, we used the dataset from the Global Livestock Impact Mapping System (GLIMS) in conjunction with country-specific annual livestock populations to reconstruct the manure nitrogen production during 1860-2014. The estimated manure nitrogen production increased from 21.4 Tg N/yr in 1860 to 131.0 Tg N/yr in 2014 with a significant annual increasing trend (0.7 Tg N/ yr, p 〈 0.01). Changes in manure nitrogen production exhibited high spatial variability and concentrated in several hotspots (e.g., Western Europe, India, northeastern China, and southeastern Australia) across the globe over the study period. In the 1860s, the northern midlatitude region was the largest manure producer, accounting for ~52 % of the global total, while low-latitude regions became the largest share (~48 %) in the most recent 5 years (2010-2014). Among all the continents, Asia accounted for over one-fourth of the global manure production during 1860-2014. Cattle dominated the manure nitrogen production and contributed ~44 % of the total manure nitrogen production in 2014, followed by goats, sheep, swine, and chickens. The manure nitrogen application to cropland accounts for less than one-fifth of the total manure nitrogen production over the study period. The 5 arcmin gridded global dataset of manure nitrogen production generated from this study could be used as an input for global or regional land surface and ecosystem models to evaluate the impacts of manure nitrogen on key biogeochemical processes and water quality. To ensure food security and environmental sustainability, it is necessary to implement proper manure management practices on cropland across the globe.

Notes: Summary The Elasto-Visco-Plastic Analysis for Rock Displacement of the Foundation Pit of a Water Power Plant In this paper a method used in the elasto-visco-plastic analysis is proposed. It has been employed for deformation analysis of the foundation pit of a large water power plant in China. The back analysis of this rock engineering problem shows that the relief of the rock initial stresses due to excavation and the rheological properties of the weak intercalations and the rock masses as well are the main factors which caused the large deformation of the foundation pit. The results from the calculations are coincided fairly well with the data measured and observed in situ.

Notes: Regular arrays of micro-pillars and nano-grooves structures on the silicon wafer arefabricated by using soft lithography, and the three dimension morphology of textured surface isobserved by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscope (AFM). Thestatic water contact angles are measured by using contact angle meter to characterize thewettabilities of these surfaces. To investigate how the presence of topography and the variations ofwettability affect the haemocompatibility of textured surface contacted with blood, differentpatterned surfaces are designed and fabricated, and blood platelet adhesion test is carried out onthese surfaces. The adhesion and coagulation of platelets are inspected by scanning electronmicroscopy (SEM). Experimental data presented in this paper indicate that different surfaceroughness and wettability are the important factors for blood platelet adhesion. The amount ofadsorbed blood platelet is low on textured surfaces, compared with that on the flat surface.Especially, there is no coagulation and activation on the surface with nanometer grooves. That is tosay, the superhydrophobic surface is apt to decrease blood platelet adhesion. The study suggests thatsurface with suitable wettabililty and textured structures exhibits superior blood compatibility

Notes: Abstract The DNA labelling of the bifilarly 5-bromodeoxyuridine- to-substituted chromatid decreased relative to that of the unifilarly substituted chromatid with increasing duration of HB pretreatment (Hoechst 33258 plus black light at 55° C). Sister chromatid differential staining was detected by Giemsa as well as a DNA-specific dye, ethidium bromide, after 4 s of HB pretreatment. The contrast of sister chromatid differential staining was improved with increased duration of HB pretreatment or by incubation with exonucleases. Hydrogen donors such as cysteamine, cysteine, and L-ascorbic acid inhibited the HB pretreatment, but this inhibition could be overcome by increasing the duration of HB pretreatment.

Description: Increased natural and anthropogenic stresses have threatened the Earth’s ability to meet growing human demands of food, energy and water (FEW) in a sustainable way. Although much progress has been made in the provision of individual component of FEW, it remains unknown whether there is an optimized strategy to balance the FEW nexus as a whole, reduce air and water pollution, and mitigate climate change on national and global scales. Increasing FEW conflicts in the agroecosystems make it an urgent need to improve our understanding and quantification of how to balance resource investment and enhance resource use efficiencies in the FEW nexus. Therefore, we propose an integrated modeling system of the FEW nexus by coupling an ecosystem model, an economic model, and a regional climate model, aiming to mimic the interactions and feedbacks within the ecosystem-human-climate systems. The trade-offs between FEW benefit and economic cost in excess resource usage, environmental degradation, and climate consequences will be quantitatively assessed, which will serve as sustainability indicators for agricultural systems (including crop production, livestock and aquaculture). We anticipate that the development and implementation of such an integrated modeling platform across world’s regions could build capabilities in understanding the agriculture-centered FEW nexus and guiding policy and land management decision making for a sustainable future.

Description: The terrestrial biosphere can release or absorb the greenhouse gases, carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) and therefore plays an important role in regulating atmospheric composition and climate1. Anthropogenic activities such as land use change, agricultural and waste management have altered terrestrial biogenic greenhouse gas fluxes and the resulting increases in methane and nitrous oxide emissions in particular can contribute to climate warming2,3. The terrestrial biogenic fluxes of individual greenhouse gases have been studied extensively4-6, but the net biogenic greenhouse gas balance as a result of anthropogenic activities and its effect on the climate system remains uncertain. Here we use bottom-up (BU: e.g., inventory, statistical extrapolation of local flux measurements, process-based modeling) and top-down (TD: atmospheric inversions) approaches to quantify the global net biogenic greenhouse gas balance between 1981-2010 as a result of anthropogenic activities and its effect on the climate system. We find that the cumulative warming capacity of concurrent biogenic CH4 and N2O emissions is about a factor of 2 larger than the cooling effect resulting from the global land CO2 uptake in the 2000s. This results in a net positive cumulative impact of the three GHGs on the planetary energy budget, with a best estimate of 3.9±3.8 Pg CO2 eq/yr (TD) and 5.4±4.8 Pg CO2 eq/yr (BU) based on the GWP 100 metric (global warming potential on a 100-year time horizon). Our findings suggest that a reduction in agricultural CH4 and N2O emissions in particular in Southern Asia may help mitigate climate change.

Description: A radiation gene box (RGB) onboard the SJ-10 satellite is a device carrying mice and drosophila cells to determine the biological effects of space radiation environment. The shielded fluxes of different radioactive sources were calculated and the linear energy transfers of γ-rays, electrons, protons and α-particles in the tissue were acquired using A-150 tissue-equivalent plastic. Then, a conceptual model of a space radiation instrument employing three semiconductor sub-detectors for deriving the charged and uncharged radiation environment of the RGB was designed. The energy depositions in the three sub-detectors were classified into 15 channels (bins) in an algorithm derived from the Monte Carlo method. The physical feasibility of the conceptual instrument was also verified by Monte Carlo simulations.

Description: Three new compounds based on H 2 BDC and PyBImE [H 2 BDC = 1,4-benzenedicarboxylatic acid, PyBImE = 2-(2-pyridin-4-yl-vinyl)benzimidazole], namely, [Co(PyBImE)(BDC)(H 2 O) 2 ] ( 1 ), [Co(PyBImE) 2 (HBDC)(BDC) 0.5 ] ( 2 ), and [(HPyBImE) + · (BDC) 2 – 0.5 · (H 2 BDC) 0.5 ] ( 3 ), were synthesized by hydrothermal methods and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Compound 1 is a one-dimensional chain bridged by terephthalate in a bis(monodentate) fashion. In the complex the nitrogen atom from N BIm and the coordination water molecule complete the coordination sphere. In complex 2 , the dinuclear cobalt units are bridged by terephthalate in a bis(bidentate) fashion into a one-dimensional chain, but different from complex 1 , the nitrogen atom from N Py and the oxygen atom from hydrogenterephthalate complete the coordination sphere. Complex 3 is a co-crystal with PyBImE and H 2 BDC in a 1:1 ratio and the transfer of hydrogen atoms leads the complex into a salt. Interesting supramolecular structures are shown due to the hydrogen bonding as well as π ··· π interactions in the three complexes. Thermal and magnetic properties of 1 and 2 were also studied.

Description: Background: The taxonomy and systematics of Salix subgenus Salix s.l. is difficult. The reliability and evolutionary implications of two important morphological characters (number of stamens, and morphology of bud scales) used in subgeneric classification within Salix remain untested, and a disjunct Old–New World distribution pattern of a main clade of subgenus Salix s.l., revealed by a previous study, lacks a reasonable explanation. To study these questions, we conducted phylogenetic analyses based on 4,688 bp of sequence data from four plastid (rbcL, trnD–T, matK, and atpB–rbcL) and two nuclear markers (ETS and ITS) covering all subgenera of Salix, and all sections of subgenus Salix s.l. Results: Subgenus Salix came out as para- or polyphyletic in both nrDNA and plastid trees. The plastid phylogeny successfully resolved relationships among the major clades of Salix, but resolution within subgenus Salix s.l. remained low. Nevertheless, three monophyletic groups were identifiable in subgenus Salix s.l.: the ‘main clade’ of subgenus Salix s.l., with New and Old World species being reciprocally monophyletic; the section Triandroides clade; and the subgenus Pleuradenia clade. While nrDNA regions showed higher resolution within subgenus Salix s.l., they failed to resolve subgeneric relationships. Extensive, statistically significant gene-tree incongruence was detected across nrDNA–plastid as well as nrDNA ETS–ITS phylogenies, suggesting reticulate evolution or hybridization within the group. The results were supported by network analyses. Ancestral-state reconstructions indicated that multiple stamens and free bud scales represent the plesiomorphic states within Salix, and that several significant shifts in stamen number and bud scale morphology have occurred. Conclusions: Subgenus Salix s.l. is not monophyletic, and the evolutionary history of the subgenus has involved multiple reticulation events that may mainly be due to hybridization. The delimitation of subgenus Salix s.l. should be redefined by excluding section Triandrae and subgenus Pleuradenia from it. The evolutionary lability of bud-scale morphology and stamen number means that these characters are unreliable bases for classification. The disjunct Old–New World distribution of subgenus Salix s.l. appears to be linked to the profound climatic cooling during the Tertiary, which cut off gene exchange between New and Old World lineages.
