    Description: Volcano-seismic signals such as long-period events and tremor are important indicators for volcanic activity and unrest. However, their wavefield is complex and characterization and location using traditional seismological instrumentation is often difficult. In 2019 we recorded the full seismic wavefield using a newly developed 3C rotational sensor co-located with a 3C traditional seismometer on Etna, Italy. We compare the performance of the rotational sensor, the seismometer and the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia-Osservatorio Etneo (INGV-OE) seismic network with respect to the analysis of complex volcano-seismic signals. We create event catalogs for volcano-tectonic (VT) and long-period (LP) events combining a STA/LTA algorithm and cross-correlations. The event detection based on the rotational sensor is as reliable as the seismometer-based detection. The LP events are dominated by SH-type waves. Derived SH phase velocities range from 500 to 1,000 m/s for LP events and 300–400 m/s for volcanic tremor. SH-waves compose the tremor during weak volcanic activity and SH- and SV-waves during sustained strombolian activity. We derive back azimuths using (a) horizontal rotational components and (b) vertical rotation rate and transverse acceleration. The estimated back azimuths are consistent with the INGV-OE event location for (a) VT events with an epicentral distance larger than 3 km and some closer events, (b) LP events and tremor in the main crater area. Measuring the full wavefield we can reliably analyze the back azimuths, phase velocities and wavefield composition for VT, LP events and tremor in regions that are difficult to access such as volcanoes.

    Description: Freshening of the oceans is a predicted outcome of climate change. Marine phytoplankton organisms are in general affected by salinity changes and, given their key role in oceanic food webs and geochemical cycles, it is important to investigate the response of phytoplankton species to salinity changes. Diatom species of the genus Pseudo-nitzschia can form massive and, at times, toxic blooms, because several Pseudo-nitzschia species produce the neurotoxin domoic acid. Domoic acid can cause amnesic shellfish poisoning in humans and harm animals in the marine food web. The species Pseudonitzschia seriata can produce domoic acid in cold-water areas, like the Arctic. Hence, it is relevant to investigate the response of P. seriata to different salinity levels. Three strains of P. seriata were exposed to four different salinity levels (15, 20, 30 and 40). None of the strains grew at salinity 15, and maximum growth rates were found at salinity 30. All three strains contained toxins at salinities 20–40, with the highest cellular content occurring at salinity 20. The peak in toxin content was related to a significantly lower growth rate. However, the higher toxin content overrode the lower growth rate, ultimately resulting in a higher toxin potential at salinity 20. In addition to domoic acid, all strains contained isodomoic acid C in surprisingly high amounts, similar to the domoic acid content.

    Description: The steel industry is responsible for a quarter of all industrial greenhouse gas emissions. So far, the environmental savings are mainly due to steel recycling. Besides recycling, the circular economy offers strategies to increase material efficiency and thus decrease the primary raw material demand. However, the potentials remain unexploited because circular economy concepts with a higher degree of circularity are not considered. The presented case study of an industrial machining knife illustrates how the production process can be improved by implementing various circular strategies. The environmental performance is analyzed by calculating and comparing the carbon footprint, the cumulative energy demand and the material footprint, and the material efficiency indicator. The results show that the implementation of the three overarching strategies of the circular economy - narrowing, closing, and slowing - contributes to a significant increase in material efficiency. The implementation also has a positive effect on the overall environmental performance. The circular production processes require less energy and resources and cause fewer emissions. Auxiliary processes such as additional transport routes are relevant, as they can reduce or even overcompensate for savings. These processes must be adequately considered and designed.

    Description: We demonstrate the capability of distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) to record volcano-related dynamic strain at Etna (Italy). In summer 2019, we gathered DAS measurements from a 1.5 km long fibre in a shallow trench and seismic records from a conventional dense array comprised of 26 broadband sensors that was deployed in Piano delle Concazze close to the summit area. Etna activity during the acquisition period gives the extraordinary opportunity to record dynamic strain changes ( 10􀀀8 strain) in correspondence with volcanic events. To validate the DAS strain measurements, we explore array-derived methods to estimate strain changes from the seismic signals and to compare with strain DAS signals. A general good agreement is found between array-derived strain and DAS measurements along the fibre optic cable. Short wavelength discrepancies correspond with fault zones, showing the potential of DAS for mapping local perturbations of the strain field and thus site effect due to small-scale heterogeneities in volcanic settings.

    Description: The challenges and also potentials of the energy transition are tremendous in Germany, as well as in Japan. Sometimes, structures of the old energy world need "creative destruction" to clear the way for innovations for a decarbonized, low-risk energy system. In these times of disruptive changes, a constructive and sometimes controversial dialog within leading industrial nation as Japan and Germany over the energy transition is even more important. The German-Japanese Energy Transition Council (GJETC) released a summarizing report for the first project phase 2016-2018. It includes jointly formulated recommendations for politics as well as a controversial dialogue part. The Council jointly states and recommends that: Ambitious long-term targets and strategies for a low-carbon energy system must be defined and ambitiously implemented; Germany and Japan as high technology countries need to take the leadership. Both countries will have to restructure their energy systems substantially until 2050 while maintaining their competitiveness and securing energy supply. Highest priority is given to the forced implementation of efficiency technologies and renewable energies, despite different views on nuclear energy. In both countries all relevant stakeholders - but above all the decision-makers on all levels of energy policy - need to increase their efforts for a successful implementation of the energy transition. Design of the electricity market needs more incentives for flexibility options and for the extensive expansion of variable power generation, alongside with strategies for cost reduction for electricity from photovoltaic and wind energy. The implementation gap of the energy efficiency needs to be closed by an innovative energy policy package to promote the principle of "Energy Efficiency First". Synergies and co-benefits of an enhanced energy and resource efficiency policy need to be realized. Co-existence of central infrastructure and the growing diversity of the activities for decentralization (citizens funding, energy cooperatives, establishment of public utility companies) should be supported. Scientific cooperation can be intensified by a joint working group for scenarios and by the establishment of an academic exchange program.

    Description: 〈jats:title〉Abstract〈/jats:title〉 〈jats:p〉The Nagoya Protocol on Access and Benefit Sharing is a transparent legal framework, which governs the access to genetic resources and the fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from their utilization. Complying with the Nagoya regulations ensures legal use and re-use of data from genetic resources. Providing detailed provenance information and clear re-usage conditions plays a key role in ensuring the re-usability of research data according to the FAIR (findable, accessible, interoperable and re-usable) Guiding Principles for scientific data management and stewardship. Even with the framework provided by the ABS (access and benefit sharing) Clearing House and the support of the National Focal Points, establishing a direct link between the research data from genetic resources and the relevant Nagoya information remains a challenge. This is particularly true for re-using publicly available data. The Nagoya Lookup Service was developed for stakeholders in biological sciences with the aim at facilitating the legal and FAIR data management, specifically for data publication and re-use. The service provides up-to-date information on the Nagoya party status for a geolocation provided by GPS coordinates, directing the user to the relevant local authorities for further information. It integrates open data from the ABS Clearing House, Marine Regions, GeoNames and Wikidata. The service is accessible through a REST API and a user-friendly web form. Stakeholders include data librarians, data brokers, scientists and data archivists who may use this service before, during and after data acquisition or publication to check whether legal documents need to be prepared, considered or verified. The service allows researchers to estimate whether genetic data they plan to produce or re-use might fall under Nagoya regulations or not, within the limits of the technology and without constituting legal advice. It is implemented using portable Docker containers and can easily be deployed locally or on a cloud infrastructure. The source code for building the service is available under an open-source license on GitHub, with a functional image on Docker Hub and can be used by anyone free of charge.〈/jats:p〉

    Description: Marine coastlines colonized by seagrasses are a net source of methane to the atmosphere. However, methane emissions from these environments are still poorly constrained, and the underlying processes and responsible microorganisms remain largely unknown. Here, we investigated methane turnover in seagrass meadows of Posidonia oceanica in the Mediterranean Sea. The underlying sediments exhibited median net fluxes of methane into the water column of ca. 106 µmol CH4 ⋅ m−2 ⋅ d−1. Our data show that this methane production was sustained by methylated compounds produced by the plant, rather than by fermentation of buried organic carbon. Interestingly, methane production was maintained long after the living plant died off, likely due to the persistence of methylated compounds, such as choline, betaines, and dimethylsulfoniopropionate, in detached plant leaves and rhizomes. We recovered multiple mcrA gene sequences, encoding for methyl-coenzyme M reductase (Mcr), the key methanogenic enzyme, from the seagrass sediments. Most retrieved mcrA gene sequences were affiliated with a clade of divergent Mcr and belonged to the uncultured Candidatus Helarchaeota of the Asgard superphylum, suggesting a possible involvement of these divergent Mcr in methane metabolism. Taken together, our findings identify the mechanisms controlling methane emissions from these important blue carbon ecosystems.

    Description: Dataset: Reef biogeochemistry, metabolomics, and metagenomics
    Description: This comparative 'omics dataset was collected over 15 days in June 2019 along Florida's Coral Reef. We assessed 85 reefs for the prevalence of stony coral tissue loss disease (SCTLD), nutrients (total organic carbon (TOC), total organic nitrogen (TON), inorganic nutrients), and abundances of microbial functional groups (Prochlorococcus, Synechococcus, picoeukaryotes, and heterotrophic microbes (unpigmented bacteria and archaea)), from reef depth waters. At 45 of the reefs, high-resolution photomosaics were used to examine the composition of benthic organisms. At 13 geographically dispersed reefs, we collected seawater (1.7 liters in biological triplicates) for both targeted and untargeted metabolomics analyses. Seawater (2 liters in duplicate) was collected at 26 sites, including the 13 examined for metabolomics, for taxonomic (bacteria and archaea 16S ribosomal RNA gene) and functional (shotgun metagenome) microbiome analyses, and chlorophyll. Given the stony coral tissue loss disease outbreak, we also targeted healthy and diseased coral tissue and near-coral seawater for taxonomic microbiome (16S rRNA gene) analysis (11 sites). Significance: Microorganisms and the dissolved metabolites they process are central to the functioning of ocean ecosystems. These 'invisible' ocean components are poorly understood in biodiverse and productive coral reef ecosystems, where they contribute to nutrient cycling and signaling cues between reef organisms. Microbes and dissolved metabolites offer a new means to examine reef features and have applications for conservation, monitoring, and restoration efforts in these changing ecosystems.     Description: The genus Amphidinium has been the subject of recent attention due to the production of polyketide metabolites. Some of these compounds have shown significant bioactivities and could be related to species interactions in the natural benthic microenvironment. Among these compounds, amphidinols (AMs) are suspected to be related to fish kills and probably implicated in ciguatera symptoms associated with the occurrence of benthic harmful algal blooms (bHABs). Here, we present the first report of a variety of AMs produced by cultured strains from several species from the Mexican Pacific, the Gulf of California, and the Gulf of Mexico. Through ultra-high performance liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS), ten previously known AMs (AM02, -04, -05, -06, -07, -09, -11, -14, -15, and -17), four recently reported AMs (N7, N8/N9, N12, and N13), and three new variants (U1, U2, and U3) were identified. Of the twelve analyzed Amphidinium cultures, five were not AM producers, and the cell quotas of the remaining seven strains ranged from close to nondetectable to a maximum of 1694 fg cell-1, with many intermediate levels in between. The cultures from the Mexican North Pacific coast produced AMs in a higher quantity and variety than those from worldwide locations. This is the first study of AMs from Mexican Amphidinium strains, and our results confirm the relevance of continuing the investigation of the genus bioactive metabolites.
