    Description: Inclination, declination, and relative palaeointensity calculated as a composite (WINPSV-12K) of four sediment cores (+54-03/57PC, +54-03/64PC, +54-03/67PC, +54-03/68PC) from Windermere, UK, spanning the Holocene. The inclination and declination are reliable, but the RPI is not reliable and should not be used in publications. It is made available for those who wish to plot it anyway. For each variable we have included the calculated values and the 5% and 95% confidence envelope limits. Values are calaculated for every 50 year timestep.

    Description: Seismic data was acquired to study the transition from rifted continental crust to oceanic crust at the Deep Galicia Margin from June to August 2013. 3D Multichannel reflection and coincident wide-angle seismic data were acquired simultaneously as part of a seismic experiment over an area of 80 km long and 25 km wide in the Deep Galicia margin. The multichannel reflection seismic volume was acquired by the R/V Marcus G. Langseth, which provided a source for the ocean bottom seismic data. A total of 86 ocean bottom hydrophones/seismometer deployments were carried out by F/S Poseidon. Two airgun arrays with total gun volumes of 3,300 cu.in. were deployed as seismic sources. Shots were fired alternately using two source arrays every 37.5 m (shot interval of ~ 16 s with ship speed of 4.5 knots). Data were converted into SEGY format.     Description: The three-dimensional wide-angle active source seismic dataset was acquired during the CHIMNEY seagoing expedition (RRS James Cook – JC152 experiment; August – September 2017), at the Scanner pockmark, an active fluid flow structure in the North Sea. The aim of the data collection was to understand the structure and the physical properties below this methane-venting seafloor depression. The data were acquired using two GI-guns in harmonic mode (2x210 cu. in.) and 25 four-component Ocean Bottom Seismometers recording at a sampling rate of 4 kHz. The shooting interval was 8 s, equivalent to 18.5 m at the mean vessel speed of 4.5 kn. Additional seismic reflection data acquired during JC152 are used for comparison with the ocean bottom seismometer data. Three sub-bottom profiler profiles, one horizon surface (Base of the Witch Ground formation) and one multi-channel profile acquired with a surface sparker are used for comparison. The sub-bottom profiler data were acquired using a chirp sweep lasting 0.035 s, with a bandwidth of 2.8-6 kHz, and a central frequency of 4.4 kHz. These profiles have a trace spacing of 2.5 m and a vertical resolution of 〈 15 cm. The base of the Witch Ground formation is interpreted as a surface from over 100 SBP profiles and the surface attributes are used for comparison with OBS recordings. The Squid surface sparker data were acquired with a 80-1800 Hz source and 2 s shot interval (~4.6 m at 4.5 kn), and were recorded on a multi-channel streamer.

    Description: Estimating the range at which an acoustic receiver can detect greenhouse gas (e.g., CO2) leakage from the sub-seabed is essential for determining whether passive acoustic techniques can be an effective environmental monitoring tool above marine carbon storage sites. Here we report results from a shallow water experiment completed offshore the island of Panarea, Sicily, at a natural CO2 vent site, where the ability of passive acoustics to detect and quantify gas flux was determined at different distances. Cross-correlation methods determined the time of arrival for different travel paths which were confirmed by acoustic modelling. We develop an approach to quantify vent bubble size and gas flux. Inversion of the acoustic data was completed using the modelled impulse response to provide equivalent propagation ranges rather than physical ranges. The results show that our approach is capable of detecting a CO2 bubble plume with a gas flux rate of 2.3 L/min at ranges of up to 8 m, and determining gas flux and bubble size accurately at ranges of up to 4 m in shallow water, where the bubble sound pressure is 10 dB above that of the ambient noise.

    Description: Highlights • Approaches for CO2 leakage detection, attribution and quantification monitoring exist. • Many approaches cover multiple monitoring tasks simultaneously. • Sonars and chemical sensors on ships or AUVs can cover large areas. • Newer, more specific technologies can detect, verify and quantify smaller, localised leaks. Environmental monitoring of offshore Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) complexes requires robust methodologies and cost-effective tools to detect, attribute and quantify CO2 leakage in the unlikely event it occurs from a sub-seafloor reservoir. Various approaches can be utilised for environmental CCS monitoring, but their capabilities are often undemonstrated and more detailed monitoring strategies need to be developed. We tested and compared different approaches in an offshore setting using a CO2 release experiment conducted at 120 m water depth in the Central North Sea. Tests were carried out over a range of CO2 injection rates (6 - 143 kg d−1) comparable to emission rates observed from abandoned wells. Here, we discuss the benefits and challenges of the tested approaches and compare their relative cost, temporal and spatial resolution, technology readiness level and sensitivity to leakage. The individual approaches demonstrate a high level of sensitivity and certainty and cover a wide range of operational requirements. Additionally, we refer to a set of generic requirements for site-specific baseline surveys that will aid in the interpretation of the results. Critically, we show that the capability of most techniques to detect and quantify leakage exceeds the currently existing legal requirements.
