    Description: A new approach for a solid delta44/40Ca temperature calibration of the polar to subpolar planktonic foraminifera N. pachyderma (sin.) is presented, based on a broad sample pool comprising North and South Atlantic genotyped net catches and Nordic Seas core top sample material. With this new additional SST proxy, the 'cold end' error of proxy temperature calibrations was addressed in combining delta44/40Ca, Mg/Ca and delta18O ratios in tests of N. pachyderma (sin.). At water temperatures below about 3.5°C, the proxy to temperature relationship recorded in the Mg/Ca and delta44/40Ca signal simultaneously disappears. Based on these 'cold-end' proxy-data we present a model demonstrating that the aberrant delta44/40Ca and Mg/Ca ratios in N. pachyderma (sin.) calcified in cold polar waters can be interpreted by a two-step chemical modification of vacuolized seawater during its cytosolar transport to the calcification site.

    Description: New radiometric age and geochemical data of volcanic rocks from the guyot-type Marie Byrd Seamounts (MBS) and the De Gerlache Seamounts and Peter I Island (Amundsen Sea) are presented. 40Ar/39Ar ages of the shield phase of three MBS are Early Cenozoic (65 to 56 Ma) and indicate formation well after creation of the Pacific-Antarctic Ridge. A Pliocene age (3.0 Ma) documents a younger phase of volcanism at one MBS and a Pleistocene age (1.8 Ma) for the submarine base of Peter I Island. Together with published data, the new age data imply that Cenozoic intraplate magmatism occurred at distinct time intervals in spatially confined areas of the Amundsen Sea, excluding an origin through a fixed mantle plume. Peter I Island appears strongly influenced by an EMII type mantle component that may reflect shallow mantle recycling of a continental raft during the final breakup of Gondwana. By contrast the Sr-Nd-Pb-Hf isotopic compositions of the MBS display a strong affinity to a HIMU type mantle source. On a regional scale the isotopic signatures overlap with those from volcanics related to the West Antarctic Rift System, and Cretaceous intraplate volcanics in and off New Zealand. We propose reactivation of the HIMU material, initially accreted to the base of continental lithosphere during the pre-rifting stage of Marie Byrd Land/Zealandia to explain intraplate volcanism in the Amundsen Sea in the absence of a long-lived hotspot. We propose continental insulation flow as the most plausible mechanism to transfer the sub-continental accreted plume material into the shallow oceanic mantle. Crustal extension at the southern boundary of the Bellingshausen Plate from about 74 to 62 Ma may have triggered adiabatic rise of the HIMU material from the base of Marie Byrd Land to form the MBS. The De Gerlache Seamounts are most likely related to a preserved zone of lithospheric weakness underneath the De Gerlache Gravity Anomaly.

    Description: The coastal ocean is strongly affected by ocean acidification because of its shallow water depths, low volume, and the closeness to terrestrial dynamics. Earlier observations of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and total alkalinity (TA) in the southern part of the North Sea, a northwest European shelf sea, revealed lower acidification effects than expected. It has been assumed that anaerobic degradation and subsequent TA release in the adjacent back-barrier tidal areas (Wadden Sea) in summertime is responsible for this phenomenon. In this study the exchange rates of TA and DIC between the Wadden Sea tidal basins and the North Sea and the consequences for the carbonate system in the German Bight are estimated using a 3D ecosystem model. The aim of this study is to differentiate the various sources contributing to observed high summer TA in the southern North Sea. Measured TA and DIC in the Wadden Sea are considered as model boundary conditions. This procedure acknowledges the dynamic behaviour of the Wadden Sea as an area of effective production and decomposition of organic material. According to the modelling results, 39 Gmol TA yr−1 were exported from the Wadden Sea into the North Sea, which is less than a previous estimate but within a comparable range. The interannual variabilities in TA and DIC, mainly driven by hydrodynamic conditions, were examined for the years 2001–2009. Dynamics in the carbonate system are found to be related to specific weather conditions. The results suggest that the Wadden Sea is an important driver for the carbonate system in the southern North Sea. On average 41 % of TA inventory changes in the German Bight were caused by riverine input, 37 % by net transport from adjacent North Sea sectors, 16 % by Wadden Sea export, and 6 % were caused by internal net production of TA. The dominant role of river input for the TA inventory disappears when focusing on TA concentration changes due to the corresponding freshwater fluxes diluting the marine TA concentrations. The ratio of exported TA versus DIC reflects the dominant underlying biogeochemical processes in the Wadden Sea. Whereas aerobic degradation of organic matter played a key role in the North Frisian Wadden Sea during all seasons of the year, anaerobic degradation of organic matter dominated in the East Frisian Wadden Sea. Despite the scarcity of high-resolution field data, it is shown that anaerobic degradation in the Wadden Sea is one of the main contributors of elevated summer TA values in the southern North Sea.

    Description: A Databank was created using data from 25 local catalogues and 30 special studies of earthquakes in central, northern and northwestern Europe. Event types were discriminated, fake events and duplets eliminated, and different magnitudes and intensities converted to Mw. The conversions require the establishment of regression equations. The Catalogue contains tectonic events from the Databank within the area 44°N-72°N, 25°W-32°E and the time period 1300-1993 which have Mw magnitudes of 3.50 and larger. The area is covered by different polygons. Within each polygon only data from one or a small number of the local catalogues, supplemented by data from special studies, enter the Catalogue. If there are two or more such catalogues or studies providing a solution for an event, a priority algorithm selects one entry for the Catalogue. Then Mw is calculated from one of the magnitude types, or from macroseismic data, given by the selected entry according to another priority scheme. The origin time, location, Mw magnitude and reference are specified for each entry of the Catalogue. So is the epicentral intensity, I0, if provided by the original source. Following these criteria, a total of about 5,000 earthquakes constitute the Catalogue. Although originally derived for the purpose of seismic hazard calculation within GSHAP, the Catalogue provides a data base for many types of seismicity and seismic hazard studies.

    Description: The SP lava flow is a quartz-, olivine- and pyroxene-bearing basalt with an 40Ar/39Ar age of 72 ± 4 ka (2σ). The flow is preserved in the desert climate of northern Arizona, USA. Its unweathered appearance and the lack of soil development indicate it has undergone negligible erosion and/or burial, making it an ideal site for direct calibration of cosmogenic nuclide production rates. Cross-calibrated production rates and production rate ratios for cosmogenic 21Ne, 10Be, and 14C have been determined from SP flow quartz. Production rate ratios for 21Ne/10Be, 21Ne/14C, and 14C/10Be are based on the total, local production rates of each cosmogenic nuclide, independent of scaling models, and have error-weighted means (±2σ uncertainty) of 4.44 ± 0.32, 1.43 ± 0.10, and 2.85 ± 0.21, respectively. Error-weighted mean, sea-level, high latitude (SLHL) total reference production rates of 21Ne, 10Be, and 14C are 17.0 ± 1.1, 3.84 ± 0.27, and 11.2 ± 0.6 at/g/yr (2σ), respectively, using time-independent Lal (1991) / Stone (2000) (St) scaling factors. St scaled spallogenic 10Be and 14C rates are 3.73 ± 0.26 and 9.2 ± 0.6 at/g/yr, respectively. 21Ne and 10Be production rates are integrated over the past 72 ka, whereas 14C production rates are integrated over 25 ka, the time at which SP flow quartz has reached saturation with respect to 14C. These rates overlap within 2σ uncertainty with other St-scaled production rates in the literature, including the total reference SLHL 21Ne production rate of Niedermann (2000), which is revised in this paper to 16.8 ± 3.3 at/g/yr (2σ; St scaling) to reflect a recent change in age control at the Sierra Nevada sites. All SLHL production rates are lower if time- dependent Sf, Sa, and Lm scaling factors are used. For example, error-weighted mean, sea-level, high latitude (SLHL) total reference production rates for 10Be as calculated in the CREp online calculator range from 3.49 ± 0.23 to 3.74 ± 0.25 at/g/yr (2σ), using time-dependent Lm scaling factors. Commonly used SLHL 10Be and 14C production rates in the literature were calibrated on surfaces that have been exposed to cosmic rays for less than 20 ka. Between 20 and 50 ka, the geomagnetic field is proposed to have been weaker than it is today. Production rates of cosmogenic nuclides increase during periods of weaker geomagnetic field strength. However, our study finds no measureable difference between St-scaled production rates of cosmogenic 21Ne and 10Be over the past 20 ka and St-scaled 21Ne and 10Be production rates over the past 72 ka. As such, the study suggests that 21Ne and 10Be production rates in quartz were not significantly greater during the proposed period of decreased magnetic strength from 20 to 50 ka.
