    Beschreibung: Mit der Nationalen Forschungsdateninfrastruktur (NFDI) verfolgen Bund und Länder das Ziel, Datenbestände aus der Forschung für das deutsche Wissenschaftssystem nach den FAIR-Prinzipien systematisch zu erschließen, damit diese für Dritte besser zugänglich gemacht werden. Die NFDI wird als Netzwerk von Konsortien über einen Zeitraum von drei Jahren ab 2020 in drei aufeinanderfolgenden Förderphasen aufgebaut. Eine wichtige Rolle spielt dabei auch die Abdeckung disziplinübergreifender Querschnittsthemen. Zur Förderung des Dialogs zur NFDI in der Helmholtz-Gemeinschaft veranstaltete das Helmholtz Open Science Office am 4. Mai 2021 ein digitales Helmholtz Open Science Forum unter dem Motto „Helmholtz in der Nationalen Forschungsdateninfrastruktur (NFDI)“. Als Impuls für die weitere Diskussion lud das Helmholtz Open Science Office alle interessierten Mitarbeitenden der Helmholtz-Gemeinschaft zu diesem virtuellen Helmholtz Open Science Forum ein. Neben einer Einführung durch das NFDI-Direktorat stellten Vorträge die Bandbreite der NFDI-Beteiligung in Helmholtz dar (z. B. Praxisberichte bereits bewilligter Konsortien sowie Vorträge zum Umgang mit der NFDI aus Perspektive eines Zentrums, eines Forschungsbereichs und einer Plattform des Inkubators “Information & Data Science”); auch wurde das Zusammenspiel von NFDI und European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) vom Büro Brüssel der Gemeinschaft beleuchtet. Im Kern stand die Identifikation und Diskussion zu Helmholtz-spezifischen Aspekten bei der Realisierung der NFDI.

    Beschreibung: The spatial and temporal heterogeneity of ecosystems plays an important role in species distribution and ecosystem dynamics (Kovalenko et al., 2012). The physical and biochemical properties of the waters of the Mackenzie Shelf in the Beaufort Sea are strongly influenced by the eponymous river and its discharge plume, occasionally causing strong salinity, temperature, and turbidity gradients (Brenkman et al., 2007; Swanson & Kidd, 2009; Jensen et al., 2014), thus affecting the distribution of economically and culturally important organisms, among others. Clarifying how the physical characteristics of marine habitats influence the relative abundance and demographic characteristics of anadromous fishes has an important bearing on management and conservation objectives. The objective of this study was to examine how the timing and catch of Dolly Varden in the nearshore summer subsistence fishery are affected by environmental conditions in the Beaufort Sea. In addition, we examined whether there is a relationship between environmental parameters and the demographic and somatic characteristics of the Dolly Varden caught. The study analysed fisheries-dependent data from two different study sites (Herschel Island and Shingle Point, Yukon Territory, Canada) from 2013 to 2019. Remotely sensed environmental parameters of temperature, chlorophyll-a, turbidity, and sea ice were derived from Landsat-8 and Sentinel-2 imagery and examined along with wind vectors. To provide information on how Dolly Varden abundances respond to stochastic environmental events in marine waters. Measured environmental parameters show that aggregation of Dolly Varden on Herschel Island is spatially correlated with increased chlorophyll-a as well as SST. Stochastic turbidity events showed a negative influence, causing specimens to seek spatial refuge in better water conditions. Results showed similar correlations for SPT, although the parameters here are much more difficult to differentiate due to the high suspended sediment concentration (CDOM). Data obtained from this study indicate that the geographic distribution of Dolly Varden in the Beaufort Sea is dependent on condition and osmoregulation (age/length). In marine waters, adult individuals are clearly influenced by stochastic environmental events (temperature and turbidity), opportunistically seeking out production hotspots for feeding (sea ice and chlorophyll-a).

    Beschreibung: The Arctic is the region on Earth expected to experience the highest rate of warming caused by climate change. Ocean warming is directly and indirectly decreasing oxygen concentration in the ocean, therewith confronting marine biota with a change of two crucial abiotic factors. Polar cod Boreogadus saida is an Arctic key stone species due to its central position in the food web. In order to contribute to a better understanding of its upper thermal limits and the synergistic effects of warming and decreasing oxygen availability on its metabolic and swimming capacity, Polar cod were acclimated to a temperature hypothesised to belong to its upper thermal limit (10°C) over 10 months. Using static and swim tunnel respirometry 10°C were found to clearly belong to the pejus temperature range of Polar cod although aerobic scope and swimming capacity were maintained at this temperature. No metabolic compensation was observed for standard metabolic rate that increased by a factor of five. A significant PO2 effect on maximum metabolic rate and aerobic scope was observed when measuring metabolic and swimming capacity at decreasing ambient oxygen levels. Polar cod displayed oxy regulation over the whole PO2 range tolerated. Critical velocity stayed stable until 40% ambient O2 saturation whereas gait transition velocity decreased non-significantly at 50% O2. Temperature had a strong negative effect on hypoxia tolerance by increasing Pcmax and Pcrit to 12.53 and 5.22 kPa O2, respectively. We observed that water masses of 10°C can be tolerated in short-term by Polar cod but do not allow for population survival. Hypoxia tolerance was found to be strongly decreased at the long-term incubation temperature but still remained high in inter-species comparison and with respect to 10°C as pejus temperature. Future research should address hypoxia tolerance of Polar cod during acute warming to understand the physiological impacts during marine heatwaves.

    Beschreibung: SeaDataCloud Temperature and Salinity historical data collections covering the time period 1900-2018 were released in 2020 for each European marginal sea (Arctic Sea, Baltic Sea, Black Sea, North Sea, North Atlantic Ocean, and Mediterranean Sea). A Quality Assurance Strategy (QAS) was developed and continuously refined in order to improve the quality of the SeaDataNet database content and derive the best data products through an iterative approach, which allows the versioning of data products. Regional Temperature and Salinity climatologies (see Figure 1) have been produced using DIVAnd software (Barth et al. 2014) and integrating for the first time SeaDataNet data with external data sources, such as CMEMS in situ TAC (Coriolis Ocean Dataset for Reanalysis) that highly increased the temporal and spatial data coverage. Regional climatologies were designed with a harmonized initial approach and all cover the time period after 1955, when marine data start to be sufficient for mapping. All regional products are characterized by monthly fields over the whole time span 1955-2018 and seasonal decadal fields on the same vertical standard levels of the World Ocean Atlas (WOA18, Garcia et al., 2019). A global SDC climatology has been created for the first time, which contains two different monthly climatology for temperature and salinity, one covering the time period 1900-2017 and the other with a different time coverage 2003-2017, computed from World Ocean Database (WOD2018, Boyer et al., 2019). This choice has been made because spatial coverage of SeaDataNet data at global scale is still too sparse. A consistency analysis of all SDC climatologies versus the WOA has been performed to demonstrate the differences and the value added of SDC products. SDC team worked to optimize the data integration process with external sources, to better tune the DIVAnd parameters, the background field estimation and to improve the final consistency analysis with the available multi-year products from WOA and CMEMS. An overview of the methodology applied to compute the SDC climatologies and their main characteristics will be presented together with the main results achieved by the SDC products team. SDC products, data collections and climatologies, are available through a dedicated web catalogue (https://www.seadatanet.org/Products/) together with their Digital Object Identifier (DOI) and the relative Product Information Document (PIDoc), containing all specifications about product’s generation, quality assessment, technical details and usability to facilitate users’ uptake.

    Beschreibung: The aim of this study is to contribute to a learning process about innovative and successful approaches to overcoming problems and challenges of urban environmental protection. To this end, a detailed overview of the importance of environmental challenges, political priorities and successful solutions in selected countries and cities is given. Based on this, the study analyzes specific success factors and discusses the extent to which these can be transferred and replicated to other cities. Finally, recommendations are made for cities, countries and the international community on how environmental protection at the urban level can be further strengthened. The role of German cities and institutions will also be discussed. The case studies analyzed include Belo Horizonte in Brazil, Moscow in Russia, Kochi in India, Beijing in China, Cape Town in South Africa and Jakarta in Indonesia. These cities were selected because they have already implemented successful policies, measures and other initiatives in the past. For each city, the study analyzes relevant policy documents in order to present the respective challenges and political priorities. The analysis aims to understand the effectiveness of the plans and instruments taking into account the national political environment. Despite the cross-sectoral approach, the analysis of each case study focuses on specific sectors in order to produce well-founded results. The success factors that are worked out based on this sectoral analysis are placed in a holistic context in order to be able to make generalizable statements about success factors.

    Beschreibung: Two thirds of today's world trade is based on global value chains and supply networks. Purely regional supply chains have become less important in recent decades. The effects of these globalised structures are manifold. On the one hand, they promote employment and generate prosperity. On the other hand, they are beset by extreme social, ecological and economic imbalances. The COVID-19 pandemic has demonstrated the fragility of existing supply chain systems. The lockdown continues to disrupt complex supply chains and many problems of existing production and consumption continue to worsen. COVID-19 is one example of the crises that can shake globally networked supply chains in the short term. Other crises, such as climate change, develop more insidiously and are less immediately recognisable. Different as they are, such crises have one thing in common: they highlight the vulnerability of global social and economic structures and illustrate the impact of global trade on the regions and people of the world. This is precisely where global sustainability strategy comes in - it aims to fundamentally reduce differences and inequalities in opportunities and quality of life. The COVID-19 pandemic has forced the entire world into upheaval, creating an opportunity to make sustainability a central political resilience strategy. In the wake of the Corona pandemic, the discussion about resilient communities has flared up. In order to guarantee supply in the face of such crises, these should be more strongly regional and circular in their economic approach and global and sustainable in their perspective. The aim should be sustainable, transparent, non-exploitative supply chains that guarantee the security of supply to cover basic needs and public services despite sudden changes and crises. This discussion paper draws a future scenario of globally cooperative, circular regional economies that fundamentally reduce global inequalities in opportunities and quality of life, while at the same time permanently preserving the natural foundations of life.

    Beschreibung: The Paris Agreement combines collective goals with individual countries' contributions. This hybrid approach does not guarantee that the individual contributions add up to what is required to meet the collective goals. The Paris Agreement therefore established the Global Stocktake. Its task is to "assess collective progress" towards achieving the long-term goals of the agreement as of 2023 and every five years thereafter. Corresponding to this role, this report addresses three questions: What should an effective Global Stocktake look like? What information and data are needed? Is it possible to execute an effective Global Stocktake within the mandate of the Paris Agreement?
