    Notes: Abstract. The problem of electrostatic potential distribution in superconductors is studied based on the microscopic theory of superconductors. Local chemical potential of the superconductor is introduced, and an approximation is made to BG theory, which is similar to the Thomas-Fermi (TF) method used in quantum mechanics. The electrostatic potential and charge distribution around an isolated vortex in type-II superconductors is discussed within the approximation. A correction to GL theory considering the electrostatic potential distribution is suggested.

    Notes: Abstract We analyze a new type of response function which portrays the properties of a system perturbed by an external field in terms of the perturbed two-point correlations of density fluctuations rather than in terms of perturbed averages of physical quantities. This “response function of the second kind” satisfies both fluctuation-dissipation-like theorems, relating it to three-point equilibrium functions, and hierarchical relationship linking it to conventional quadratic (rather than linear) response functions. In the equal-time limit, when the two density fluctuations are observed at the same time, the response function of the second kind is intimately connected to the two-particle correlation function of kinetic theory. This linkage opens an avenue for developing novel approximation techniques for correlated many-body systems.

    Description: Die ursprünglich aus dem nordwestasiatischen Pazifik stammende invasive Rotalge Agarophyton vermicu/ophyllum (Ohmi) Gurgel, J.N.Norris et Fredericq, 2018:9 (Synonym: Gracilaria vermiculophyl/a (Ohmi) Papenfuss) und ihre Widerstandsfähigkeit gegenüber biologischen Stressfaktoren ist als Modellalge umfassend untersucht worden. Eine wichtige Rolle in der effizienteren C02-Aufnahme und -Nutzung spielt bei den meisten Makroalgen das Enzym Carbonatanhydrase (CA). Wie in den bisher unveröffentlichten in vivo Untersuchungen von O. Onoyewe und F. Weinberger festgestellt werden konnte, können nicht-heimische Populationen von A. vermiculophyllum das CO2 schneller aufnehmen als heimische, was auf Unterschiede in der Expression von CA zwischen verschiedenen Populationen hindeutet. Basierend auf diesen Experimenten wurde von mir eine Methode entwickelt, die auf Messung der CA-katalysierten Umwandlung von Fluorescein diacetat zum Fluoreszenzfarbstoff Fluorescein mit und ohne Beigabe des Hemmstoffs Acetazolamid basiert und es ermöglicht in vitro direkt testen zu können, ob der CA-Gehalt von Proteinextrakten aus der Alge sich unterscheidet. Dadurch konnte herausgefunden werden, dass Vmax für Carbonatanhydrase bei nicht-heimischen Populationen größer als bei den heimischen Populationen ist. Dies bedeutet also, dass die nicht-heimischen Populationen im Mittel eine höhere maximale Reaktionsgeschwindigkeit haben. Dieses Ergebnis könnte erklären, wieso unter gleichen Bedingungen bei nicht-heimischen Populationen ein schnelleres Wachstum im Vergleich zu den heimischen Populationen beobachtet werden kann.

    Description: A novel correction method for self-absorption effects is proposed for extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) detected in the fluorescence mode on multilayer samples. The effects of refraction and multiple reflection at the interfaces are fully considered in this correction method. The correction is performed in k -space before any further data analysis, and it can be applied to single-layer or multilayer samples with flat surfaces and without thickness limit when the model parameters for the samples are known. The validity of this method is verified by the fluorescence EXAFS data collected for a Cr/C multilayer sample measured at different experimental geometries.

    Description: Background: Nilaparvata lugens (the brown planthopper, BPH) and Laodelphax striatellus (the small brown planthopper, SBPH) are two of the most important pests of rice. Up to now, there was only one mitochondrial genome of rice planthopper has been sequenced and very few dependable information of mitochondria could be used for research on population genetics, phylogeographics and phylogenetic evolution of these pests. To get more valuable information from the mitochondria, we sequenced the complete mitochondrial genomes of BPH and SBPH. These two planthoppers were infected with two different functional Wolbachia (intracellular endosymbiont) strains (wLug and wStri). Since both mitochondria and Wolbachia are transmitted by cytoplasmic inheritance and it was difficult to separate them when purified the Wolbachia particles, concomitantly sequencing the genome of Wolbachia using next generation sequencing method, we also got nearly complete mitochondrial genome sequences of these two rice planthoppers. After gap closing, we present high quality and reliable complete mitochondrial genomes of these two planthoppers. Results: The mitogenomes of N. lugens (BPH) and L. striatellus (SBPH) are 17, 619 bp and 16, 431 bp long with A + T contents of 76.95 % and 77.17 %, respectively. Both species have typical circular mitochondrial genomes that encode the complete set of 37 genes which are usually found in metazoans. However, the BPH mitogenome also possesses two additional copies of the trnC gene. In both mitochondrial genomes, the lengths of the atp8 gene were conspicuously shorter than that of all other known insect mitochondrial genomes (99 bp for BPH, 102 bp for SBPH). Two rearrangement regions (trnC-trnW and nad6-trnP-trnT) of mitochondrial genomes differing from other known insect were found in these two distantly related planthoppers revealed that the gene order of mitochondria might conserved in Delphacidae. The large non-coding fragment (the A+T-rich region) putatively corresponding responsible for the control of replication and transcription of mitochondria contained a variable number of tandem repeats (VNTRs) block in different natural individuals of these two planthoppers. Comparison with a previously sequenced individual of SBPH revealed that the mitochondrial genetic variation within a species exists not only in the sequence and secondary structure of genes, but also in the gene order (the different location of trnH gene). Conclusion: The mitochondrial genome arrangement pattern found in planthoppers was involved in rearrangements of both tRNA genes and protein-coding genes (PCGs). Different species from different genera of Delphacidae possessing the same mitochondrial gene rearrangement suggests that gene rearrangements of mitochondrial genome probably occurred before the differentiation of this family. After comparatively analyzing the gene order of different species of Hemiptera, we propose that except for some specific taxonomical group (e.g. the whiteflies) the gene order might have diversified in family level of this order. The VNTRs detected in the control region might provide additional genetic markers for studying population genetics, individual difference and phylogeographics of planthoppers.

    Description: The Snail family member snail encodes a zinc finger-containing transcriptional factor that is involved in heart formation. Yet, little is known about how Snail regulates heart development. Here, we identified that one of the duplicated snail genes, snai1b, was expressed in the heart region of zebrafish embryos. Depletion of Snai1b function dramatically reduced expression of α5 integrin, disrupted Fibronectin layer in the heart region, especially at the midline, and prevented migration of cardiac precursors, resulting in defects in cardiac morphology and function in zebrafish embryos. Injection of α5β1 protein rescued the Fibronectin layer and then the myocardial precursor migration in snai1b knockdown embryos.     Description: The Positron Emission Mammography imaging system (PEMi) provides a novel nuclear diagnosis method dedicated for breast imaging. With a better resolution than whole body PET, PEMi can detect millimeter-sized breast tumors. To address the requirement of semi-quantitative analysis with a radiotracer concentration map of the breast, a new attenuation correction method based on a three-dimensional seeded region growing image segmentation (3DSRG-AC) method has been developed. The method gives a 3D connected region as the segmentation result instead of image slices. The continuity property of the segmentation result makes this new method free of activity variation of breast tissues. The threshold value chosen is the key process for the segmentation method. The first valley in the grey level histogram of the reconstruction image is set as the lower threshold, which works well in clinical application.     Description: Understanding dispersal ability in pest species is critical for both theoretical aspects of evolutionary and population biology and from a practical standpoint, such as implementing effective forecasting systems. The small brown planthopper (SBPH), Laodelphax striatellus (Fallén), is an economically important pest, but few data exist on its dispersal ability. Here, we used mitochondrial and nuclear markers to elucidate the population genetic structure of SBPH and of the parasitic bacterium Wolbachia throughout temperate and subtropical China. Our results showed that the SBPH populations in China lack significant differences in genetic structure, suggesting extensive gene flow. Multilocus sequence typing revealed that Wolbachia infection was systematic and due to the same strain (wStri) within and across populations. However, the mtDNA haplogroups had a nonrandom distribution across the sampling localities, which correlated to latitudinal and climatic gradients.
