Notizen: Previous perturbed angular correlation (PAC) spectroscopy measurements on the donor indium in CdTe and its alloys have revealed several defect complexes. One defect characterized by two sets of quadrupole interaction parameters, νQ=83 MHz, η=0.08 and νQ=92 MHz, η=0.08, was observed in Hg0.8Cd0.2Te (x=0.2 MCT) and attributed to the substitutional indium–metal vacancy complex InM2+3+VM2+. A defect characterized by νQ=61±1 MHz and asymmetry parameter η between 0 and 0.19 was seen in CdTe and widely attributed to the same complex. Both of these assignments were based mainly on an observed relationship between complex formation and the loss of metal ions. In this article we present PAC measurements on 111In-doped x=0.45 MCT (Hg0.55Cd0.45Te). These measurements reveal defects having quadrupole interactions very similar to those seen previously in CdTe and in x=0.2 MCT. Two unique defect fractions f1 and f2, characterized by νQ1=60±3 MHz, η1≈0–0.2, and νQ2=87±4 MHz, η2≈0–0.15, were seen in x=0.45 MCT, in some cases simultaneously. The observation of both of these interactions in the same material—if they correspond to the defects seen in CdTe and x=0.21 MCT—precludes the possibility that they both correspond to precisely the same defect. We also observed a change in the relative fractions of these two defects with time at room temperature; the fraction f2 vanished over a period of a day, while f1 and f0 (the fraction of indium atoms in sites having cubic or higher symmetry) increased. While we cannot rule out the possibility of a slow electronic transition, at present we favor a model in which one of the interactions (probably the one near 60 MHz) corresponds to a complex in which indium is paired to a fast-diffusing monovalent metal ion like Ag+, Cu+, or Li+. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: The design, fabrication, and performance of an apparatus for measurements of rf penetration depth in superconducting samples are described. The instrument makes use of a close-cycle helium refrigerator and is capable of measuring vortex dynamics in superconducting sample of volume as small as 1×10−3 cm3 with a signal-to-noise ratio of 1400. The system has been tested for a tunnel diode oscillator and an IC 74LS04 oscillator in the 3–5 MHz frequency range. Both magnetic field magnitude and angular variations to the resolution of 1 G and 0.05°, respectively, are possible with the apparatus. The system performance is evaluated by measuring the dynamical behavior of vortices in platelet samples of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 and (Bi-Pb)2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10 superconductors. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: The interaction of vacancies with 111In atoms is studied in Hg1−xCdxTe compounds via perturbed-angular correlation (PAC) experiments, for x=0.065, 0.21, 0.44, and 0.95. In the low-x (Hg-rich) compounds, Hg vacancies are created by heating in vacuum. For the x=0.21 alloy, we have previously shown that InC-vacC pairs (A centers consisting of an In atom on a cation site and a vacancy at a neighboring cation site) are abundant after quenching from elevated temperatures. These defects are characterized by two PAC signals with quadrupole interaction frequencies νQ1=83 MHz and νQ2=92 MHz, and asymmetry parameters η1=η2=0.08. For the x=0.065–0.44 alloys, the data presented in this article show that the fractions f1 and f2 of In atoms associated with these two frequencies vary with x according to whether one or two Hg atoms are nearest neighbors to the Te atom that is bound to the In atom and the vacancy. The data are explained by the polarizable point-ion model. For the x=0.95 compound, PAC signals are observed only when stable In is added to the compound, indicating that the presence of In creates vacancies, and that self-compensation via A centers is dominant. In this case, the well-known frequencies νQ4=100 MHz and νQ5=112 MHz are seen for samples quenched from several different temperatures between 325 and 525 °C, or slow cooled from 475 °C or below. In contrast, for a sample slowly cooled from 525 °C, the frequency νQ6=60 MHz was dominant. This signal could be due to InC−vacC pairs in which the vacancy is singly charged, or to In-group I pairs. We attribute the frequencies νQ4=100 MHz and νQ5=112 MHz, like νQ1 and νQ2, to InC-vacC pairs having doubly charged vacancies. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: The interfacial interactions between in situ thermally evaporated Au and polycarbonate (PC) film, a technologically important polymeric material, is studied by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Angle resolved XPS is performed to investigate the Au reactivity if any, in forming the metal-polymer interface. The spectral evidence from the above suggests that the metal interacts predominantly with the carbonyl carbon of the monomeric unit with only minor interactions with the phenyl carbons without any complex formation. In contrast to previous findings of Au to be inert at the M-polymer interfaces, this work emphasizes the salient charge transfer type interactions of Au (as electron injector) at the C(Double Bond)O as the primary interaction site, distributing a net charge density to C(Double Bond)O with the formation of a Au-CO π-back bond. The conclusions are supported by the observed new C 1s feature at 282.6 eV and the O 1s and Au 4f7/2 XPS spectral changes. The growth mode of Au on PC was proceeded by the metal monolayer deposition with cluster growth on the already weakly bonded Au onto the C(Double Bond)O carbon of the polymeric backbone. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Plants regenerated from cell suspension cultures of palmarosa grass, Cymbopogon martinii (Roxb.) Wats, were analysed for somaclonal variation in five clonal generations. A wide range of variation in important quantitative traits, e.g. plant yield, height, tiller number, oil content and qualitative changes in essential oil constituents—geraniol, geranyl acetate, geranyl formate and linalool—were observed among the 120 somaclones screened. Eight somaclones were selected on the basis of high herb and oil yield over the donor line and high geraniol content in the oil. Based on performance in the field trials, three superior lines were selected, and maintained for five clonal generations. The superior lines exhibited a reasonable degree of stability in the traits selected.

Notizen: 1. Polyriboinosinic-polyribocytidylic acid (Poly I:Poly C), an interferon inducer was studied for its effect on gastric ulceration in rats. Polyriboinosinic-polyribocytidylic acid (1,2 and 4 mg/kg, i.m.) showed a dose-dependent inhibition of gastric ulcers induced by aspirin, cold restraint stress and pylorus ligation (Shay's model). Protective dose (PD50)±SEM values of Poly I:Poly C on these models of ulcers were 1.9±0.2, 2.3±0.4 and 2.8±0.4 (mg/kg, i.m.) respectively.2. Polyriboinosinic-polyribocytidylic acid (10-60 μg) produced dose-dependent inhibition of gastric proton pump (H+/K+-ATPase) activity in the gastric parietal microsomal fraction. The concentration of Poly I:Poly C causing a 50% inhibition (IC50)±SEM was found to be 17.6±1.2 μg.3. Polyriboinosinic-polyribocytidylic acid caused a significant decrease in free and total acid and pepsin and an increase in mucin content in Shay (pylorus-ligated) rat.4. Polyriboinosinic-polyribocytidylic acid did not exert a significant influence on isolated tissue preparations for anticholinergic (acetylcholine-induced contraction of guinea-pig ileum) and H2-anti-histaminic (histamine-induced contraction of rat uterus and guinea-pig auricle) activities.5. Thus, the present study indicates that Poly I:Poly C may possess anti-gastric ulcer activity as a result of inhibition of the gastric proton pump.

Notizen: Tissue repair and wound healing are complex processes that involve inflammation, granulation, and remodeling of the tissue. In this study, we evaluated the in vivo effects of curcumin (difeurloylmethane), a natural product obtained from the rhizomes of Curcuma longa on wound healing in rats and guinea pigs. We observed faster wound closure of punch wounds in curcumin-treated animals in comparison with untreated controls. Biopsies of the wound showed reepithelialization of the epidermis and increased migration of various cells including myofibroblasts, fibroblasts, and macrophages in the wound bed. Multiple areas within the dermis showed extensive neovascularization, and Masson's Trichrome staining showed greater collagen deposition in curcumin-treated wounds. Immunohistochemical localization of transforming growth factor-β1 showed an increase in curcumin-treated wounds as compared with untreated wounds. In situ hybridization and polymerase chain reaction analysis also showed an increase in the mRNA transcripts of transforming growth factor-β1 and fibronectin in curcumin-treated wounds. Because transforming growth factor-β1 is known to enhance wound healing, it may be possible that transforming growth factor-β1 plays an important role in the enhancement of wound healing by curcumin.

Notizen: Tissue repair and wound healing are complex processes that involve inflammation, granulation and tissue remodeling. Interactions of different cells, extracellular matrix proteins and their receptors are involved in wound healing, and are mediated by cytokines and growth factors. Previous studies from our laboratory have shown that curcumin (diferuloylmethane), a natural product obtained from the rhizomes of Curcuma longa, enhanced cutaneous wound healing in rats and guinea pigs. In this study, we have evaluated the efficacy of curcumin treatment by oral and topical applications on impaired wound healing in diabetic rats and genetically diabetic mice using a full thickness cutaneous punch wound model. Wounds of animals treated with curcumin showed earlier re-epithelialization, improved neovascularization, increased migration of various cells including dermal myofibroblasts, fibroblasts, and macrophages into the wound bed, and a higher collagen content. Immunohistochemical localization showed an increase in transforming growth factor-β1 in curcumin-treated wounds compared to controls. Enhanced transforming growth factor-β1 mRNA expression in treated wounds was confirmed by in situ hybridization, and laser scan cytometry. A delay in the apoptosis patterns was seen in diabetic wounds compared to curcumin treated wounds as shown by terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase–mediated deoxyuridyl triphosphate nick end labeling analysis. Curcumin was effective both orally and topically. These results show that curcumin enhanced wound repair in diabetic impaired healing, and could be developed as a pharmacological agent in such clinical settings.
