Beschreibung: Optic technologies and methods/procedures are established across all areas and scales in limnic and marine research in Germany and develop further continuously. The working group “Aquatic Optic Technologies” (AOT) constitutes a common platform for knowledge transfer among scientists and users, provides a synergistic environment for the national developer community and will enhance the international visibility of the German activities in this field. This document summarizes the AOT-procedures and -techniques applied by national research institutions. We expect to initiate a trend towards harmonization across institutes. This will facilitate the establishment of open standards, provide better access to documentation, and render technical assistance for systems integration. The document consists of the parts: Platforms and carrier systems outlines the main application areas and the used technologies. Focus parameters specifies the parameters measured by means of optical methods/techniques and indicates to which extent these parameters have a socio-political dimension. Methods presents the individual optical sensors and their underlying physical methods. Similarities denominates the common space of AOT-techniques and applications. National developments lists projects and developer groups in Germany designing optical hightechnologies for limnic and marine scientific purposes.

Beschreibung: Raw data of pCO2 measurements during Celtic Explorer cruise CE12010 at station 44ROV12 (Gas Release Experiment). The gas discharge of the gas release experiment was observed in situ during a 4 hour dive with GEOMAR's remotely operated vehicle ROV Kiel 6000 equipped with HD camera/video device and a sonar system. The spread of the dissolved CO2 plume was monitored geochemically using the commercial HydroC pCO2 sensor (S/N 0412-006, Kongsberg Maritime Contros GmbH) mounted to the front porch of the ROV. The sensor was calibrated for pCO2 signals up to 3,000 µatm (accuracy ~1% of reading resolution; resolution: 〈30 µatm) and was programmed to measure in 60 s intervals, which is equal to the sensor's response time.

Beschreibung: The data involves annotations with the MBARI VARS annotation software of pelagic HD video transects obtained by the pelagic in situ observations system PELAGIOS. PELAGIOS is a newly developed towed camera system for deep-sea biological exploration and performance of video transects for diversity and distribution data. The data was collected in 2015 during cruise MSM49 on R/V MARIA S. MERIAN, from 20 to 950 m, during day (187 minutes) and night (292 minutes) transects on the northwestern slope of Senghor Seamount (17°14.2'N, 22°00.7'W; bottom depth of approximately 1000 m). The annotated organisms include fishes, crustaceans and gelatinous zooplankton. One file includes the transect length at each depth at day or night and another file has all individual annotated taxa observed at a particular depth at day or night. The Figure 4 is made with this data. A third file involves the data we used to make Figure 3 which is the comparison between the observations of Poeobius observed in PELAGIOS and UVP5 to calculate sample volume.

Beschreibung: The environmental background hydrography of the Goldeneye area North Sea was determined by a video guided water sampler rosette/CTD system. The system was used to perform vertical profiles along the water column and near seafloor observations via towing. The CTD system (SBE 9) unit included additional pH (SBE27), O2 (SBE43) and altimeter (PSA-916, Teledyne Benthos) sensors. On POS534 cruise, an HD-Video camera and light sources were attached to the lower part of the frame providing video footage of the near seafloor (Linke et al., 2015) during a gas release experiment at different CO2-release rates. Far field (background) data was recorded during VCTD stations 3-6 and 9-11. Near field measurements and video-observations were performed during VCTD 7, 8, and 12.
