Notizen: Anaerobic digestion of olive mill wastewaters is generally performed in anaerobic contact bioreactors where the removal of toxic phenols is often unsatisfactory. In the present work we show that a granular activated carbon packed-bed biofilm reactor can be successfully used to achieve effective and reproducible wastewater decontamination even at high organic loads. A comparison of 16S rRNA gene sequences of the inoculum and of biomass samples from different districts of the reactor revealed enrichment of specific microbial populations, probably minor members of the inoculum and/or of the olive mill wastewaters. They mainly consisted of the members of Proteobacteria, Flexibacter-Cytophaga-Bacteroides, and sulphate-reducing bacteria. The dominant sequence among Archaea (70% of clones) was closely related to Methanobacterium formicicum.

Notizen: Abstract Microorganisms obtained from a contaminated experimental soil were found to reductively dechlorinate the polychlorobiphenyls (PCBs) of ex-commercial Fenclor 54 and of a synthetic mixture of single congeners, under laboratory anaerobic conditions. The dechlorination rate and extent tended to increase as the chlorination degree of F 54 congeners increased. Several penta-chlorinated congeners temporarily accumulated during the final period of incubation. Dechlorination occurred primarily from the meta and para positions while ortho-sustituted congeners accumulated in the medium during incubation. The dechlorination pattern observed with these unacclimated microorganisms in both PCB mixtures could be only partially compared to patterns reported in the literature. The low product yield deriving from reductive dechlorination of PCBs, i.e. di-and tri-chlorinated biphenyls, and the slow rate of PCB biotransformation can be attributed to a lower dehalogenation capability of artificially contaminated soil microorganisms and, perhaps, also to the inadequacy of the adopted anaerobic medium.

Notizen: Summary A mixed bacterial culture obtained from polychlorinated-biphenyl-contaminated river sediments proved capable of degrading 3-chlorobiphenyl (3-CB) under aerobic laboratory conditions. Almost total mineralization of 150 mg/l of 3-CB occurred when, after 3 days of incubation, the mineral medium was supplied with benzoic acid as a carbon source. Two strains of Pseudomonas capable of degrading the substrate to 3-chlorobenzoic acid and a strain of Pseudomonas fluorescens capable of co-metabolizing this metabolite were selected from the mixed culture. A nearly stoichiometric amount of chloride, which defines the percentage of total mineralization, was eliminated during mixed culture growth.

Notizen: Summary dl-Ethionine-resistant mutants of Saccharomyces uvarum ATCC 26602 were found to overproduce exogenous l-methionine. dl-Ethionine-resistant mutant ER 108, carrying a mutation to chloramphenicol resistance was converted to petite form, and protoplasts obtained from it were fused with protoplasts from antibiotic-sensitive S. cerevisiae X2928 carrying six auxotrophies. The resulting fusants maintained four auxotrophies and were capable of overproducing l-methionine. These fusants were stable after ten passages on complete medium.

Notizen: Summary The aerobic dechlorination of 4-chlorobiphenyl and of Aroclor 1221 by Pseudomonas sp. CPE1 strain was enhanced by the presence of hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin in the medium. The best dechlorination results were obtained when 4-chlorobiphenyl or Aroclor 1221 and the cyclodextrin were used at the molar ratios 1:1 and 1:1.5. This agent can be adopted to enhance the efficiency of PCB degradation tests.

Notizen: The Monod or Andrews kinetic parameters describing the growth of Pseudomonas sp. CPE2 strain on 2,5-dich!orobenzoic acid and 2-chlorobenzoic acid, and Al-caligenes sp. CPE3 strain on 3,4-dichlorobenzoic acid, 4-chlorobenzoic acid, and 3-chlorobenzoic acid were determined from batch and continuous growth experiments conducted in the presence or absence of yeast extract (50 mg/L). Strain CPE2 displayed inhibitory growth kinetics in the absence of yeast extract and a noninhibitory kinetics in the presence of yeast extract. Similar results were obtained for CPE3. The presence of yeast extract also resulted in a significant increase in the affinity of the strains for the chlorobenzoic acids they degraded. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notizen: The possibility of enhancing the intrinsic ex-situ bioremediation of a chronically polychlorinated biphenyl-contaminated soil by using cyclodextrins was studied in this work. The soil, contaminated with a large array of polychlorinated biphenyls and deriving from a dump site where it has been stored for about 10 years, was found to contain indigenous cultivable aerobic bacteria capable of utilising biphenyl and chlorobenzoic acids. The soil was amended with inorganic nutrients and biphenyl, saturated with water, and treated in aerobic batch slurry- and fixed-phase reactors. Hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin and γ-cyclodextrin, added to both reactor systems at the concentration of 10 g/L at the 39th and 100th days of treatment, were found to generally enhance the depletion rate and extent of the soil polychlorobiphenyls. Despite some abiotic losses could have affected the depletion data, experimental evidence, such as the production of metabolites tentatively characterized as chlorobenzoic acids and chloride ion accumulation in the reactors, indicated that cyclodextrins significantly enhanced the biological degradation of the soil polychlorobiphenyls. This result has been ascribed to the capability of cyclodextrins of enhancing the availability of polychlorobiphenyls in the hydrophilic soil environment populated by immobilised and suspended indigenous soil microorganisms. Both cyclodextrins were metabolised by the indigenous soil microorganisms at the concentration at which they were used. Therefore, cyclodextrins, both for their capability of enhancing the biodegradation of soil polychlorobiphenyls and for their biodegradability, can have the potential of being successfully used in the bioremediation of chronically polychlorinated biphenyl-contaminated soils. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Beschreibung: This paper presents major gaps and challenges for implementing the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030) in the Mediterranean region. The authors make recommendations on the scientific knowledge needs and co-design actions identified during two consultations, part of the Decade preparatory-phase, framing them in the Mediterranean Sea’s unique environmental and socio-economic perspectives. According to the ‘Mediterranean State of the Environment and Development Report 2020’ by the United Nations Environment Programme Mediterranean Action Plan and despite notable progress, the Mediterranean region is not on track to achieve and fully implement the Sustainable Development Goals of Agenda 2030. Key factors are the cumulative effect of multiple human-induced pressures that threaten the ecosystem resources and services in the global change scenario. The basin, identified as a climate change vulnerability hotspot, is exposed to pollution and rising impacts of climate change. This affects mainly the coastal zones, at increasing risk of extreme events and their negative effects of unsustainable management of key economic assets. Transitioning to a sustainable blue economy is the key for the marine environment’s health and the nourishment of future generations. This challenging context, offering the opportunity of enhancing the knowledge to define science-based measures as well as narrowing the gaps between the Northen and Southern shores, calls for a joint (re)action. The paper reviews the state of the art of Mediterranean Sea science knowledge, sets of trends, capacity development needs, specific challenges, and recommendations for each Decade’s societal outcome. In the conclusions, the proposal for a Mediterranean regional programme in the framework of the Ocean Decade is addressed. The core objective relies on integrating and improving the existing ocean-knowledge, Ocean Literacy, and ocean observing capacities building on international cooperation to reach the “Mediterranean Sea that we want”.
