Notes: Abstract Photoinduced electron transfer reactions play an important role in the primary step of the biological photosynthesis process. In an attempt to understand better the mechanism of the charge separation organic donor-acceptor molecules containing porphyrins and quinones were designed as photosynthesis models. In order to study the structure dependence of the photoinduced electron transfer twofold and fourfold bridged porphyrin-quinone systems with increasing donor-acceptor distance were synthesized (Figure 1) [1, 2, 3]. It was assumed that in these molecules the porphyrin and quinone should be linked in a rigid and well-defined orientation. To verify this assumption the conformational behavior of these systems was studied by high-temperature MD simulations in combination with conformational analysis of selected minimized structures [4, 5].

Notes: Abstract The attachment of a virus to the host cell surface is influenced by enthalpic and entropic factors. A detailed evaluation of all possible energetic interactions including the effects of solvent molecules seems to be a promising way to gain deeper insights in the overall process of binding. Here we performed intensive molecular dynamics studies to compare the conformational space available for the unbound sialyllactose in aqueous solution and when complexed with influenza A hemagglutinin and the murine polyoma virus. In general the conformational freedom of sialyllactose is considerably reduced compared to the free state. Remarkably, two different conformations of the Siaα(2-3)Galβ glycosidic linkages are preferred (which are both populated in the free state) when complexed with either protein.

Notes: Summary Fruitflies (Drosophila melanogaster) may respond with landing reactions in tethered flight to unilateral progressive motion of single vertical dark stripes. The response frequency to repeated unilateral stimulation has a characteristic time course, a fast increase followed by a slower decrease. This behaviour is explained by the habituation of the input channels to a leaky integrator. The half-life of the integrated signal is in the range of 1 s. ‘Contralateral sensitization’ (CoS) describes the sensitization of the landing response to unilateral stimuli by preceding contralateral stimulation. It acts by increasing the initial reactivity, which habituates. The effects of CoS are thus still obvious after 1 min of repetitive stimulation. CoS can effectively be mediated by movement stimuli as well as by flickering light. We also show that binocular rotation rather than unilateral back to front motion inhibits the landing response (in the monocular part of the visual field). The biological significance of the described temporal characteristics of the landing response system and their possible neuronal basis are discussed.

Notes: Summary The effects of ryanodine and ryanodine steady-state condition (RSSC) on contractile-related calcium were examined in isolated guinea pig left atrial muscle. 1. RSSC is a specific irreversible condition occurring after a brief exposure to 1×10−7 M ryanodine, followed by washing. It is characterized by elimination of the contraction following a 10-sec rest interval (post-rest) and prolongation of the associated action potential duration (AP50%) from 78.9 to 160.8 msec with minimal alteration in steady-state tension development determined at 1 Hz. 2. Induction of RSSC with a ryanodine-bovine serum albumin conjugate produced similar alterations in post-rest contractile strength and action potential duration. 3. In the presence of 1×10−7 M ryanodine, guinea pig left atria exhibit a significant increase in total 45Ca efflux from two rapidly exchangeable compartments (compartment 1, t 1/2=1.58 min; compartment 2, t 1/2-8.20 min). 4. In atria loaded after the induction of RSSC, total 45Ca release was significantly reduced by 7.2% of the total exchange. 5. The 45Ca exchange space for RSSC atria was reduced from 23.22±0.81 to 19.85±1.22 ml per 100 g muscle without a significant reduction in the total exchange space. 6. From these results, it is concluded that the effects of low concentrations of ryanodine and RSSC are to alter the contractile calcium levels of the tissue, primarily from sarcolemmal membrane sites which regulate post-rest contractile strength and action potential duration.

Notes: Summary A quantitative light microscopic analysis of the ventral grey matter in the lumbar spinal cord of homozygous nude (nu/nu) and heterozygous (nu/+) mice was performed to determine the possible contribution of lymphocytes to normal C.N.S. tissue. If lymphocytes were present in the neuropil, they could be mistaken for neuroglial cells. Athymic nude mice offer a good model, since they lack T-lymphocytes and symptoms of neurological involvement. Mean cell counts from 1 μm sections were tested by analysis of variance. There were no strain differences for the area and number of neurons. The total neuroglial cell count was also similar, but the number of oligodendrocytes decreased 28%, astrocytes increased 51% and microglia were unchanged in the nude compared with the heterozygous mouse. There were no qualitative differences at the ultrastructural level among the neuroglia of either strain. Either the genetic defect retards and alters neuroglial cell development, or some of the small, round dark nuclei belong to lymphocytes, which have earlier migrated into the C.N.S. parenchyma. Lymphocytes could then participate in a cell-mediated immune response with brain macrophages, which are thought to be primarily derived from mononuclear leukocytes.

Description: The ultimate, possibly geodynamic control and potential impact of changes in circulation activity and salt discharge of Mediterranean outflow waters (MOW) on Atlantic meridional overturning circulation have formed long-standing objectives in paleoceanography. Late Pliocene changes in the distal advection of MOW were reconstructed on orbital timescales for northeast Atlantic DSDP/ODP sites 548 and 982 off Brittany and on Rockall Plateau, supplemented by a proximal record from Site U1389 west off Gibraltar, and compared to Western Mediterranean surface and deep-water records of Alboran Sea Site 978. From ~3.43 to 3.3 Ma, MOW temperatures and salinities form a prominent rise by 2–4 °C and ~3 psu, induced by a preceding and coeval rise in sea surface and deep-water salinity and increased summer aridity in the Mediterranean Sea. We speculate that these changes triggered an increased MOW flow and were ultimately induced by a persistent 2.5 °C cooling of Indonesian Through-Flow waters. The temperature drop resulted from the northward drift of Australia that crossed a threshold value near 3.6–3.3 Ma and led to a large-scale cooling of the eastern subtropical Indian Ocean and in turn, to a reduction of African monsoon rains. Vice versa, we show that the distinct rise in Mediterranean salt export after ~3.4 Ma induced a unique long-term rise in the formation of Upper North Atlantic Deep Water, that followed with a phase lag of ~100 ky. In summary, we present evidence for an interhemispheric teleconnection of processes in the Indonesian Gateways, the Mediterranean and Labrador Seas, jointly affecting Pliocene climate.
