Notizen: [Auszug] THE occurrence and metabolism of organic acids in liverworts had not been investigated until a chromato-graphic survey had been made by Allsopp1. However, he failed to detect any acids in eight genera investigated by him and was of the opinion that non -volatile organic acids may be totally absent ...

Notizen: Abstract Self-similar unsteady flows with zero temperature gradient behind strong spherical shocks propagating in non-uniform perfect gas at rest are investigated. The total energy of the flow is assumed to be varying with the shock radius obeying a power law. Approximate solutions in a closed analytical form are obtained using the integral method. Also these solutions are shown to be useful to calculate easily and quickly the shock temperature, X-ray surface brightness and luminosity which are important in astrophysical problems. It is found that these approximate solutions are in close agreement with numerical solutions.

Notizen: Abstract Convective plume patterns, characteristic of clear sky and light wind daytime boundary layers over land, were observed for two nights with a tri-axial Doppler sodar operated in the central area of Rome during the summer of 1994. An urban heat island effect, combined with a continuation of a breeze from the sea late into night during both days, is believed to be responsible for the observed nocturnal convection. Estimates of the surface heat flux and the vertical velocity scaling parameter are obtained from profiles of vertical velocity variance, and the Raman lidar water vapor measurements are used to obtain the humidity scaling parameter. Convective scaling results for vertical wind and humidity fairly agree with the results of other experiments and models. On the basis of available measurements, it appears that mixed-layer similarity formulations used to characterize the daytime convective boundary layer over horizontally homogeneous surfaces can also be applied to the nocturnal urban boundary layer during periods of reasonable convective activity.

Notizen: Abstract Similarity solutions are obtained for spherical radiation-driven shock waves propagating in a non-uniform atmosphere at rest obeying a density power law. Approximate analytical solutions are also obtained and found to be in good agreement with the numerical solutions. The effect of the parameter characterizing the initial density distribution of the gas on solutions of the flow field is studied in detail. It is also shown analytically that the shock wave propagates as an overdriven detonation.

Notizen: Abstract Self-similar solutions of the second kind for the unsteady one-dimensional flow behind converging spherical and cylindrical strong shocks in a non-ideal medium are studied. The equation of state of the medium is assumed to be in the form of the Mie-Gruneisen type. A simple numerical technique is developed to find the similarity exponent. Detailed studies are carried out for a different non-ideal medium such as a dusty gas, condensed matter and c,s medium. The solutions for an ideal gas are recovered as a particular case. A comparative study of the numerical and some approximate solutions is also made.

Notizen: Abstract The self-similar solutions for converging spherical and cylindrical strong shock waves in a non-ideal gas satisfying the equation of state of the Mie-Gruneisen type are investigated. The equations governing the flow, which are highly non-linear hyperbolic partial differential equations, are first reduced to a Poincaré-type ordinary differential equation with suitable approximation. Such an approximation helps in obtaining the self-similar solutions and the similarity exponent numerically by phase-plane analysis.
