Description: Chemical weathering plays a key role in the long-term climate change and global biogeochemical cycle. In this study, a 5.1 m-long basalt-developed weathering profile from Hunan Province, China, was selected for the analyses of major elements, grain size, pH, total organic carbon, thermogravimetric (TG) and differential thermogravimetric properties (DTG), as well as stable isotopes (dD and d18O) in mineral-bound waters. The major purpose is to distinguish different types of mineral-bound water and to verify whether hydrogen and oxygen isotopes of mineral-bound water can indicate chemical weathering intensity. Based on the TG and DTG results, different types of mineral-bound water were extracted by a sequential heating extraction technique (40-120 °C, 120-300 °C, 300-600 °C and 600-900 °C). The mineral-bound water lost below 120 °C is absorbed water, a mixture of interlayer and crystal waters occurs at 120-300 °C, and above 300 °C is mostly constitution water. Hydrogen and oxygen isotopic ratios at top ~ 2 m are subject to the influences of eolian and pedogenic processes. The absorbed water has been exchanged and reached isotopic equilibrium with ambient soil water, while the crystal water and interlayer water cannot be separated by heating method in this study. Hydrogen and oxygen isotopes of constitution water can indicate chemical weathering, showing positive relationships with weathering intensity. Although the mechanism for their indication to chemical weathering remains further investigation, we suggest that the isotopic fractionation between the formation of clay minerals and surface water should be taken into account. This research sheds new light on mineral-bound water phase and a potential proxy for tracing the process of chemical weathering.

In:  Supplement to: Shao, Hebin; Yang, Shouye; Wang, Quan; Guo, Yulong (2015): Discriminating hydrothermal and terrigenous clays in the Okinawa Trough, East China Sea: Evidences from mineralogy and geochemistry. Chemical Geology, 398, 85-96, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.chemgeo.2015.02.001
    Publication Date: 2023-02-24
Description: The Okinawa Trough (OT) in the East Asian continental margin is characterized by thick terrigenous sediment and ubiquitous volcanic-hydrothermal activities. In this study, the clays collected during IODP Expedition 331 to the middle OT (Iheya North Knoll) were analyzed for mineralogical and geochemical compositions. By comparing with the clays from the East China Sea shelf and surrounding rivers, we examine different clay origins. The hydrothermal field in the mid-OT is dominated by Mg-rich chlorite, while the recharge zone has clay mineral assemblages similar to the shelf and rivers, showing high content of illite, subordinate chlorite and kaolinite and scarce smectite. Compared to the terrigenous clays, the hydrothermal clays in the OT have high concentrations of Mg, Mn and Zr but low Fe, Na, K, Ca, Ba, Sr, P, Sc and Ti, while the hydrothermal clays in the mid-ocean ridge are relatively enriched in Fe and V and depleted in Al, Mg, Zr, Sc and Ti. Different fractionation patterns of rare earth elements also register in the terrigenous and hydrothermal clays, diagnostic of variable clay origins. We infer that the OT hydrothermal clay was primarily formed by the chemical alteration of detrital sediments subject to the hydrothermal fluids. The remarkably different compositions of hydrothermal clays between the sediment-rich back arc basin like OT and the sediment-starved ocean ridge suggest different physical and chemical processes of hydrothermal fluids and fluid-rock/sediment reactions under various geologic settings.

Description: Here we present the data of a sequential extraction scheme, which aims to evaluate the effect of barite-bound Sr in the residual fraction after decarbonation. The investigation is done with pertinent examples for Mediterranean sediments, focusing on the most-recent sapropel S1 interval. A total of 130 samples were taken from 10 cores in the eastern Mediterranean Sea (EMS) and 1 core in the western Mediterranean Sea. This selection represents a geographic and bathymetric coverage of the EMS and permits the basin-wide comparison between organic-rich and -lean sediments. After decarbonation using 1 M HCl solution, the residual sediments were subject to NH4Cl extraction (2 M, pH 7), known to selectively dissolve barite. Our results demonstrate the presence of Sr-bearing barite after traditional carbonate removal and its effect on the derived “detrital” Sr signature, with important implications for detrital provenance studies.
