Notes: The influence of ball-milling methods on microstructure and mechanical properties of silicon nitride (Si3N4) ceramics produced by pressureless sintering for a sintering additive from MgO–Al2O3–SiO2 system was investigated. For planetary high-energy ball milling, the mechanical properties of Si3N4 ceramics were evidently improved and a homogeneous microstructure developed. In contrast, some exaggerated elongated grains were developed due to the local enrichment of sintering additives in the specimen prepared by general ball milling. For Si3N4 ceramics produced by planetary ball milling, flexure strength of 1.06 GPa, Vickers hardness of 14.2 GPa, and fracture toughness of 6.6 MPa·m0.5 were achieved. The differences in the mechanical properties of Si3N4 ceramics produced by different processing seem to arise mainly from the changes in microstructural homogenization and sinterability. The planetary high-energy ball-milling process provides a good route to mix starting powders for developing ceramics with uniform microstructure and promising mechanical properties.

Notes: Abstract HER-2/neu (c-erbB-2) gene amplification based on Southern blotting or immunohistochemistry has been shown to be predictive of poor outcome in breast cancer occurring in women over 40, but there is little data on the role of HER-2/neu in young women with breast cancer, many of whom may have inherited BRCA1 or other predisposing genes. The present study used fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) on archival specimens of breast cancer from 37 women under the age of 40 to evaluate the role of HER-2/neu amplification in this cohort, and to also evaluate the efficacy of FISH for quantifying amplification. The frequency of primary tumors with a greater than fourfold increase in gene copy number was found to be 38%, which is similar to the frequency of amplification reported in Southern blot studies in older women. However, the greater sensitivity of FISH enabled detection of low level amplification (more than 2 but less than 8 gene copies), which was found in an additional 30% of the tumors. Patients with low level amplification demonstrated a 54% recurrence rate, compared to 86% in those with high amplification and 17% in those with no amplification. HER-2/neu amplification appeared to be more prognostic of recurrence than nodal status, with 45% of node negative tumors recurring compared to 62% of those which were node positive, nor was tumor size predictive of recurrence in this cohort since tumors of 2 cm or less recurred in 44% of cases compared to 57% of those larger than 2 cm. Thus, this study demonstrates that FISH is a reproducible and sensitive technique for detecting HER-2/neu amplification, and that amplification of the oncogene is the strongest independent indicator of recurrence of breast cancer in young women.

Description: Extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), produced by microorganisms, are implicated for greatly influencing the fate of environmental contaminants, including oil. Transparent exopolymeric particles (TEP) are gel-like acidic polysaccharide particles that can be stained with Alcian blue, whereas Coomassie stainable particles (CSP) contain proteins and are stained with Coomassie brilliant blue. Marine microgels are reversibly formed from EPS. These terms are often used interchangeably, but they have rarely been measured simultaneously. Mesocosm and bottle experiments provided an opportunity to compare EPS, TEP, CSP and microgels in a water-accommodated fraction (WAF) of oil and seawater (control). Our results reveal that the biopolymers making up EPS, TEP and CSP consisted primarily of polysaccharides and proteins, mostly likely as proteoglycans and glycoproteins. Significant correlations were found between concentrations of TEP-C vs particulate organic carbon (POC), TEP-C vs particulate organic nitrogen (PON), TEP vs EPS, TEP vs CSP, TEP vs carbohydrates, proteins, CSP and carbohydrates, CSP vs proteins, and carbohydrates vs proteins. Chemical analysis of whole particles and colloids yielded both protein and polysaccharides concentrations higher than those in EDTA extraction, thus providing an upper limit of actual EPS contents in the particulate phase. The EPS that was electrostatically held onto particle surfaces (extractable by 1% EDTA) accounted for a minor (~4%) yet relatively constant proportion of TEP. Overall, the concentrations of the three terms ranked in the order of [gels] 〉 [TEP] 〉 [particulate EPS] in the water. Lastly, spectrophotometric methods have limitations in identifying complex or refractory polysaccharides, as evidenced by the comparison between NMR-quantified EPS and the total EPS determined by spectrophotometric methods. This study is the first time these terms were compared in the same sample. They provide useful information when reviewing historical TEP, CSP, EPS data collected field- and laboratory-studies, and provide linkages between them. In addition, they also demonstrate that they could provide complementary information relevant to ecosystem and flux studies.

Description: XAD-8 adsorption technique coupled with stepwise elution using pyrophosphate buffers with initial pH values of 3, 5, 7, 9, and 13 was developed to isolate Chinese standard fulvic acid (FA) and then separated the FA into five sub-fractions: FApH3, FApH5, FApH7, FApH9 and FApH13, respectively. Mass percentages of FApH3-FApH13 decreased from 42% to 2.5%, and the recovery ratios ranged from 99.0% to 99.5%. Earlier eluting sub-fractions contained greater proportions of carboxylic groups with greater polarity and molecular mass, and later eluting sub-fractions had greater phenolic and aliphatic content. Protein-like components, as well as amorphous and crystalline poly(methylene)-containing components were enriched using neutral and basic buffers. Three main mechanisms likely affect stepwise elution of humic components from XAD-8 resin with pyrophosphate buffers including: 1) the carboxylic-rich sub-fractions are deprotonated at lower pH values and eluted earlier, while phenolic-rich sub-fractions are deprotonated at greater pH values and eluted later. 2) protein or protein-like components can be desorbed and eluted by use of stepwise elution as progressively greater pH values exceed their isoelectric points. 3) size exclusion affects elution of FA sub-fractions. Successful isolation of FA sub-fractions will benefit exploration of the origin, structure, evolution and the investigation of interactions with environmental contaminants. Description: We consider a wireless network strategy based on successive interference cancellation (SIC) for mine locomotives. We firstly build the original mathematical model for the strategy which is a non-convex model. Then, we examine this model intensively, and figure out that there are certain regulations embedded in it. Based on these findings, we are able to reformulate the model into a new form and design a simple algorithm which can assign each locomotive with a proper transmitting scheme during the whole schedule procedure. Simulation results show that the outcomes obtained through this algorithm are improved by around 50% compared with those that do not apply the SIC technique.
