Beschreibung: The microstructures, mineralogy and chemistry of four representative samples collected from cores extracted from the Japan Trench during Integrated Ocean Drilling Project Expedition 343, the Japan Trench Fast Drilling Project (JFAST) have been studied using optical microscopy, TEM, SEM, XRF, XRD and microprobe analyses. The samples provide a transect from relatively undeformed marine sediments in the hanging wall, to the undeformed footwall material, crossing the thrust interface between the Pacific and North American plate, where the fault slipped during the March 2011 Tohoku-Oki earthquake. Our preliminary results suggest that the low strength of JFAST fault gouge material is caused by the high amount of clay minerals (~ 60% smectite, ~ 14 illite). Clay minerals in the décollement (gouge) sample are partly replaced by newly formed manganese oxide, which precipitated from hydrothermal fluids. Dauphine twins were found in quartz grains of the décollement sample suggesting local high stress possible during seismic loading. Other microstructures cannot be assigned unambiguously to co-seismic or a-seismic faulting processes. The observed scaly clay fabric is consistent with observations in many other plate-boundary fault zones. Significant grain size reduction was found in the fault (decollement) zone sample. But a change in lithology of the fault material cannot be ruled out. Microstructures typical for a-seismic deformation like dissolution-precipitation features (e.g. dissolved grain boundaries, mineral alteration) occur in all JFAST core samples, but more frequently in the décollement sample.

Notizen: Measurements of the linear absorption and the nonlinear absorption due to the bleaching of the excitonic resonance have been used to determine the band-gap reduction and valence-band splitting in spontaneously ordered GaInAs/InP. Tilts of the substrate ranging from 2° to 15° towards {111}B, different growth rates and temperatures have been used to produce a series of samples containing various degrees of ordering. Best sample quality including small x-ray and photoluminescence linewidth as well as low temperature luminescence from the band edge was obtained using a substrate tilted 6° towards {111}B. The ratio between ordering induced band-gap reduction and crystal-field splitting was found to be ζ=1.8±0.4. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Al0.5In0.5P/Ga0.5In0.5P superlattice structures have been investigated as multiquantum barriers (MQB) in 630 nm band laser diodes in order to reduce thermal current losses. By inserting an optimized MQB, we have succeeded in improving both threshold currents and characteristic temperatures of such devices. However, the optimized dimensions of the MQB found experimentally deviated strongly from those predicted theoretically, indicating that the commonly used theoretical description assuming effective mass approximation, electron wave interference, and using transfer matrix calculation is not adequate. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: We have investigated the intrinsic modulation response of GaxIn1-xP/AlGaInP quantum well lasers. The differential gain resulting from the measurement of the frequency response, is in good agreement with calculations based on a 6-band kp-theory and direct measurements of the optical gain. We find a maximum value of 3.8×10−16 cm2 for a strongly compressively strained sample, which is less than in InGaAs lasers according to the larger effective masses. The maximum bandwidth we observed is 9.3 GHz at −3 dB. We show that the bandwidth is limited by catastrophic optical damage and not by intrinsic mechanisms. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: We have studied the influence of chemical ordering on the properties of GaInP/AlGaInP optical waveguide structures and lasers. We have observed mode-conversion between transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) modes within typically 60 μm. We show that an ordering-induced birefringence with the optical axis tilted with respect to the growth direction is responsible for the coupling of the TE and TM modes. A new linear combination of TE and TM modes, the "super modes,'' can propagate in the waveguide without change. We show that these super modes govern the polarization of lasers made from ordered material. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Spontaneously ordered Ga0.47In0.53As grown on substrates with the (001) surface tilted 4° towards {111}B are studied using spectroscopic methods as well as x-ray diffraction, transmission electron diffraction and dark-field transmission electron microscopy. The single variant ordering is proved by the absence of one class of the ordering induced 〈fraction SHAPE="CASE"〉12{111}B superlattice spots in transmission electron diffraction patterns as well as by the tilted polarization of the photoluminescence emerging from the samples cleaved edge. The temperature dependence of the luminescence peak position shows an anomalous behavior at low temperatures and a strong dependence of the peak position on the excitation power. From low temperature absorption measurements, we find a band gap reduction of 37 meV and a valence band splitting of 13.2 meV. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: An electrically tunable transverse electric/transverse magnetic polarization converter using ordered AlGaInP waveguide structures is presented. The structures are grown on (001) GaAs substrates with the surface tilted 6° towards {111}B. This selects one of the two possible {111}B variants for the ordering planes. Thus, also on a macroscopic scale, the symmetry of the planar waveguide is broken. The properties of the guided modes are very sensitive to the size and orientation of the axes of the dielectric tensor. So a slight modification of their magnitudes due to electrorefraction leads to a remarkable change in the propagation constants. This change is used to accomplish tunable rotation of polarization by 90°. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.
