    Notes: Abstract The cellular repair process of injured tracheal epithelium is described for sheep after exposure to toxic smoke containing high concentrations of acrolein. Fourteen fasted 3–4-year-old ewes had a portion of their cervical trachea exposed to cotton smoke for 20 min and then were sacrificed at various time intervals ranging from 1 to 22 days after exposure. Within 1 day of injury, columnar epithelium sloughed intact from the trachea with a concomitant reduction of nearly 35% in the basal cell population. At 2 days of recovery, the cellularity of the epithelium had increased and mitotic figures were observed in some tracheal epithelial and gland cells. By 8 days, undifferentiated hyperplastic cells increased to 30/100 µm, differentiated nonciliated columnar cells first appeared, and the basal cell population returned to a normal count of 13 cells/100µm. Thirteen days after exposure, the undifferentiated hyperplastic cell population had declined to 7 cells/100/ µm, nonciliated columnar cells were at control values, and some ciliated cells were identified. At 18 and 22 days, epithelium was normal in appearance and the count was 13 cells/100µm. Data suggest that because the columnar epithelium sloughs intact with the cilia remaining active, toxic smoke may affect their attachment to the basal lamina. Furthermore, the regeneration process involves differentiation of hyperplastic cells in which they elongate down to the basal lamina, thus re-establishing the integrity of tall, epithelium in the sheep trachea.

    Description: Land use/land cover (LULC) change is one of the most important indicators in understanding the interactions between humans and the environment. Traditionally, when LULC maps are produced yearly, most existing remote-sensing methods have to collect ground reference data annually, as the classifiers have to be trained individually in each corresponding year. This study presented a novel strategy to map LULC classes without training samples or assigning parameters. First of all, several novel indices were carefully selected from the index pool, which were able to highlight certain LULC very well. Following this, a common unsupervised classifier was employed to extract the LULC from the associated index image without assigning thresholds. Finally, a supervised classification was implemented with samples automatically collected from the unsupervised classification outputs. Results illustrated that the proposed method could achieve satisfactory performance, reaching similar accuracies to traditional approaches. Findings of this study demonstrate that the proposed strategy is a simple and effective alternative to mapping urban LULC. With the proposed strategy, the budget and time required for remote-sensing data processing could be reduced dramatically.

    Description: In this study, we used proteomic profiling to compare hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and peri-tumoral tissues to identify potential tumor markers of HCC. We identified eight differentially expressed proteins (〉3-fold), including Peroxiredoxin 6 (PRDX6). PRDX6 is a bifunctional enzyme with both peroxidase and calcium-independent phospholipase A2 (iPLA2) activity. We found that peri-tumoral tissues expressed higher levels of PRDX6 mRNA ( n  = 59, P =  0.018) and protein ( n  = 265, P  〈 0.001) than HCC tissues, and that decreased expression of PRDX6 in HCC tissues was an independent risk factor indicating a poor prognosis ( n  = 145, P  = 0.007). Combining the examination of serum PRDX6 with α-fetoprotein improved the diagnostic sensitivity of tests for HCC compared to α-fetoprotein alone (85.0% vs 50.0%, n  = 40). We found that PRDX6 induced S phase arrest in HCC cells and inhibited HCC tumorigenicity in mice injected with cancer cells. When treated with H 2 O 2 , PRDX6 inhibited apoptosis. When treated with tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), PRDX6 promoted apoptosis. Inhibition of iPLA2 activity of PRDX6 decreased the apoptosis induced by TNF-α. In conclusion, PRDX6 inhibited the carcinogenesis of HCC, and the iPLA2 activity of PRDX6 promoted cancer cell death induced by TNF-α. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

    Description: In recent years, hundreds of Earth observation satellites have been launched to collect massive amounts of remote sensing images. However, the considerable cost and time to process the significant amount of data have become the greatest obstacle between data and knowledge. In order to accelerate the transformation from remote sensing images to urban thematic maps, a strategy to map the bare land automatically from Landsat imagery was developed and assessed in this study. First, a normalized difference bare land index (NBLI) was presented to maximally differentiate bare land from other land types in Wuhan City, China. Then, an unsupervised classifier was employed to extract the bare land from the NBLI image without training samples or self-assigned thresholds. Experimental results showed good performance on overall accuracy (92%), kappa coefficient (0.84), area ratio (1.1321), and match rate (83.96%), respectively. Results in multiple years disclosed that bare lands in the study site gradually moved from inner loops to the outer loops since 2007, in two main directions. This study demonstrated that the proposed method was an accurate and reliable option to extract the bare land, which led to a promising approach to mapping urban land use/land cover (LULC) automatically with simple indices.
