    Notes: Abstract Archean calcites and dolomites, if compared to their Phanerozoic counterparts, are enriched in Sr2+, Ba2+, Mn2+, Fe2+, depleted in 18O, (Na+), and contain mantle-like 87Sr/86Sr and, in associated S phases, mantle-like 34S/32S. This may be a consequence of massive seawater pumping through, and equilibration with, the coeval basaltic oceanic crust. The exponential decline of oceanic geothermal gradient in the course of terrestrial evolution led to a waning of this “mantle” flux and to the enhancement of the continental river discharge as the controlling factor of seawater composition; the major transition occurring probably during the late Archean — early Proterozoic time interval. Such evolution is consistent with the observed tectonic, sedimentological, geochemical and metallogenic secular patterns and may also provide an alternative, or complementary, inorganic explanation for the development of the post-Archean oxygenic atmosphere.

    Notes: Abstract From the planetary point of view, the Earth can be imagined as a system comprised of interwined natural populations propagated through time via recycling. This recycling, or ‘birth/death’ process, imposes age patterns on natural populations of the solid earth, hydrosphere, atmosphere and living entities. Mathematically, the concept is analogous to that of population dynamics in living systems. The populations of the Earth system form a hierarchical structure. The hierarchy of geological tectonic realms contains populations of ≤1024−1026 gr in size, with half-lives in the 107−109 yr time range. The approximate parameters for the oceans are ≤1024 gr and 102−107 yr, for the atmosphere ≤1021 gr and 10−2−107 yr, and for living systems ≤ 1014−1019 gr and 10−3−102 yr, respectively. In this perspective, and in departure from the GAIA hypothesis, the subordinate populations, such as those of living systems, are constrained to operate within limits imposed by the larger, and slower, hierarchies. They can overstep the imposed limits only on time scales shorter than the response time of the dominant populations. Isotopic record of past sea water shows that on time scales of 107 yr the solid earth, hydrosphere, atmosphere and life act as a unified system controlled by tectonics, that is by the hierarchy of the solid earth.

    Notes: Abstract Recycling as outlined by Garrels and Mackenzie (1971) is the basic process responsible for the formation, preservation, destruction and composition of sedimentary masses during geologic history. However, several sedimentological and geochemical trends are difficult to reconcile with a simple recycling model and would therefore require an evolutionary approach superimposed on the general recycling. These evolutionary trends are observable on an integrated time scale of the order of 108–109 years. The author believes that the majority of the observed “apparent” sedimentological and geochemical trends might be compatible with two to three variables, such as the evolution of the crust, $$P_{O_2 } $$ and possibly $$P_{CO_2 } $$ .

    Description: An integrated, high-resolution chemostratigraphic (C, O and Sr isotopes) and magnetostratigraphic study through the upper Middle Cambrian – lowermost Ordovician shallow-marine carbonates of the northwestern margin of the Siberian Platform is reported. The interval was analysed at the Kulyumbe section, which is exposed along the Kulyumbe River: an eastern tributary of the Enisej River. It comprises the upper Ust'-Brus, Labaz, Orakta, Kulyumbe, Ujgur, and lower Iltyk formations and includes the Steptoean positive carbon isotopic excursion (SPICE) studied here in detail from upper Cambrian carbonates of the Siberian Platform for the first time. The peak of the excursion, showing d13C positive values as high as +4.6‰ and least-altered 87Sr/86Sr ratios of 0.70909, is reported herein from the Yurakhian Horizon of the Kulyumbe Formation. The stratigraphic position of the SPICE excursion does not support traditional correlation of the boundary between the Orakta and Labaz formations at Kulyumbe River with its supposedly equivalent level in Australia, Laurentia, South China, and Kazakhstan, where the Glyptagnostus stolidotus and G. reticulatus biozones are known to immediately precede the SPICE excursion and span the Middle-Upper Cambrian boundary. The Cambrian-Ordovician boundary is probably situated in the middle Nyajan Horizon of the Iltyk Formation, in which carbon isotope values show a local maximum below a decrease in the upper part of the Nyajan Horizon, attributed herein to the Tremadocian. A refined magnetic polarity sequence shows that the geomagnetic reversal frequency was very high during the Middle Cambrian at 5-10 reversals per Ma, assuming a total duration of ~10 Ma and up to 100 magnetic intervals in the Middle Cambrian. By contrast, the sequence attributed herein to the Upper Cambrian on chemostratigraphic grounds contains only 10-11 magnetic intervals. Preprint in Open Access hdl:10013/epic.30209.d001
