    Notes: We present new images of the lower crust and Moho beneath the Valencia Trough—a young rift basin in the western Mediterranean. These images were obtained from a two-ship, wide-aperture reflection experiment and show several features not distinguishable on previously available conventional single-ship reflection profiles.The Moho, which was previously only seen intermittently, can now be confidently traced throughout the basin. We have constructed a present-day depth-to-Moho map and estimated the degree of crustal thinning for the whole basin. Crustal thinning is at a maximum in the centre of the basin, where β values reach 3.15 ± 0.25. At the margins of the basin the β value decreases to 1.5 ± 0.1.The reflective character of the lower crust and Moho is different beneath different parts of the basin. We have been able to correlate these differences with the amount of stretching. We therefore interpret the variations of the observed lower crustal reflectivity as having been caused by the most recent (Neogene) stretching event that opened the Valencia Trough. Along the Iberian margin there is well-developed lower crustal reflectivity consisting of 1-2s two-way time (TWT) of 1-4 km long, near-horizontal reflectors underlain by a more continuous, although not significantly stronger, reflector interpreted to be the reflection Moho. Offshore, this lower crustal reflective unit thins rapidly, such that it is undetectable 40-50 km from the coastline where the crust has been stretched by a factor of 1.7 ± 0.1. As the lower crustal reflectivity becomes undetectable the reflection Moho becomes a robust, continuous event. Where β exceeds 2.4 ± 0.2, however, the Moho is a weak event and difficult to trace. We infer that either the extension itself or associated melting significantly weakened or even destroyed the lower crustal reflectivity in the centre of the basin and enhanced the Moho where extension was moderate.The Balearic margin is somewhat anomalous in that there appears to have been flexural loading of the crust due to thrusting and folding that occurred at the same time as extension in the Valencia Trough. The lower crust shows evidence of weak, but locally variable lower crustal reflectivity. It is possible that the lower crustal reflectivity was preserved simply because the Moho was flexed downward and so decompression, and hence melting, of the upper mantle was restricted. This suggests that the melting itself rather than the extension is the primary mechanism of lower crustal modification.

    Notes: An analytical solution and its application to compute 2-D geoid anomalies, based on Brun's formula (Heiskanen & Moritz 1967), was developed by Chapman (1979). In this paper we present the derived solution from a thorough review of Chapman's algorithm. Apart from some typographical errors in the mathematical expressions, we have found that some of the precautions given by the author are not necessary when the algorithm is applied, in particular those regarding the unit system, topography and density contrast.

    Notes: Abstract Two profiles have been gravimetrically modelled in the central and eastern parts of the Alboran Sea and Betic Cordillera. The crust in the central part thins from 38 km below the Internal Zones to 18–22 km beneath the Alboran Basin in an area about 30 km wide. The eastern part shows greater thinning, from about 38 to 15 km, distributed over a broader area some 100 km wide. The mode of crustal thinning in the eastern part can be compared with that of a rifted passive margin whereas the central part exhibits a transform style.

    Description / Table of Contents: Abstract With a view to checking whether cyclic-AMP produces an expansive action when acting on mixed lipoprotein monolayers, such insoluble monolayers were prepared with cephalin and egg albumin. These layers showed a good miscibility between the two components, with only weak interactions being observed. The penetration of cyclic-AMP in these mixed monolayers produces an appreciable expansive effect, its action reaching a maximum level when the cyclic-AMP concentration in the subphase is 10−6 M (standard cell concentration). A similar effect on the lipoprotein mixed membranes of the cell wall is attributed to cyclic-AMP.

Ces monocouches ont montré une bonne miscibilité entre les deux composants, et seules de faibles actions réciproques ont été observées. La pénétration de l'AMP-cyclique dans ces monocouches mixtes produit un effet expansif appréciable, son action atteignant le niveau maximal lorsque la concentration de l'AMP-cyclique dans la sous-phase est de 10−6 M (concentration normale de la cellule). Un effet similaire sur les membranes mixtes de lipoprotéines de la paroi cellulaire est attribué a l'AMP-cyclique.

    Notes: Abstract Detailed structural interpretation of the recently acquired deep seismic multichannel profiles along the Iberian Atlantic Margins (IAM Project) provides new results on the geodynamic evolution of the eastern part of the Azores-Gibraltar plate boundary. Thrusting and folding of the oceanic basement and of Mesozoic and Cenozoic sedimentary cover of the Gorringe Bank region are consistent with the N–S convergence of Iberia and Africa. Compressive structures in the Gorringe Bank region are spread over a wide area. Deformation under compression took place mainly in Tertiary times, as is evidenced by a basal unconformity and several discontinuities in Tertiary sediments, although some deformation has also been recorded in Quaternary sediments. The compressive structures in the Gulf of Cadiz are E–W oriented thrusts, folds and related diapiric structures. N–S oriented transpressive deformation is likely to occur in the western Portuguese platform. There is no continuity of structures from the oceanic to the continental domain, suggesting that deformation transfers from one side to the other through a transcurrent fault zone. The fault contact between the two domains is located in the ocean-continent transition zone.

    Notes: Abstract Deep penetrating multichannel seismic reflection and gravity data have been used to study the lithospheric structure of the Canary Swell. The seismic reflection data show the transition from undisturbed Jurassic oceanic crust, away from the Canary Islands, to an area of ocean crust strongly modified by the Canary volcanism (ACV). Outside the ACV the seismic records image a well layered sedimentary cover, underlined by a bright reflection from the top of the igneous basement and also relatively continuous reflections from the base of the crust. In the ACV the definition of the boundary between sedimentary cover and igneous basement and the crust-mantle boundary remains very loose. Two-dimensional gravity modelling in the area outside the influence of the Canary volcanism, where the reflection data constrain the structure of the ocean crust, suggests a thinning of the lithosphere. The base of the lithosphere rises from 100 km, about 400 km west of the ACV, to 80 km at the outer limit of the ACV. In addition, depth conversion of the seismic reflection data and unloading of the sediments indicate the presence of a regional depth anomaly of an extension similar to the lithospheric thinning inferred from gravity modelling. The depth anomaly associated with the swell, after correction for sediment weight, is about 500 m. We interpret the lithospheric thinning as an indication of reheating of old Mesozoic lithosphere beneath the Canary Basin and along with the depth anomaly as indicating a thermal rejuvenation of the lithosphere. We suggest that the most likely origin for the Canary Islands is a hot spot.
