Notizen: Perovskite La1−xCaxMnO3−δ thin films were deposited on MgO(001) substrates using pulsed laser deposition. Effects of deposition conditions, such as laser fluence, substrate temperature, and oxygen pressure, on growth behaviors of the films were investigated over a wide range. Epitaxial La0.7Ca0.3MnO3−δ /MgO thin films were able to be grown in situ under conditions such as 1.5–2.1 J/cm2 laser fluence, 650–750 °C substrate temperature, and 100–300 mTorr oxygen pressure. The oxygen pressure during the deposition is found to be closely related to crystalline orientations of the films. Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy measurements show that the epitaxial La1−xCaxMnO3−δ thin films have compositions similar to those of targets, demonstrating that pulsed laser deposition is a useful technique to get thin films with complicated chemical compositions. The magnetoresistance, −ΔR(6T)/R(0), of the La0.7Ca0.3MnO3−δ /MgO thin film was about −80%, which is smaller than the reported values (i.e., ∼−99.92%) of the La–Ca–Mn–O thin films on LaAlO3 substrates [S. Jin, T. H. Tiefel, M. McCormack, R. A. Fastnacht, R. Ramesh, and L. H. Chen, Science 264, 413 (1994)]. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Local structure of isolated Si impurity in GaAs and AlAs is studied using a parameter-free semi-empirical tight binding method. It is predicted that nearest neighbor As atom around the impurity moves toward SiGa(Al) causing a 6.54% (5.73%) change in GaAs(AlAs) bond length. An estimation of lattice distortion energy 0.02±0.003 eV (0.025±0.003 eV) for GaAs:Si (AlAs:Si) is found in good qualitative agreement with the value obtained by J. C. M. Henning and J. P. M. Ansems [Semicond. Sci. Technol. 2, 1 (1987)] from the photoionization of the DX center in lightly doped Si impurities in Al0.33Ga0.67As. The fits for the observed maxima in the optical cross section and the calculation of the pressure-dependent thermal barrier energy lend support for the small lattice relaxation models and cast doubt on the validity of those with the large lattice relaxation usually recommended for this class of centers.

Notizen: Summary We report a case of cutaneous protothecosis treated successfully with oral fluconazole. Fluconazole appears to be an effective alternative to conventional drugs for the treatment of cutaneous protothecosis. Cutaneous protothecosis is an uncommon infection due to achlorophyllic, saprophytic, algae-like unicellular organisms of the genus Prototheca that occurs mainly in immunocompromised patients. To date there is no standard treatment regimen. Surgical excision, oral ketoconazole, intravenous amphotericin B alone or in combination with oral teracycline have been reported to be effective in the management of protothecosis.1–3 We report a 55-year-old immunocompetent woman with cutaneous protothecosis which developed at the site of intralesional triamcinolone acetonide injection, who was successfully treated with oral fluconazole.

Notizen: We experienced an unusual case of mycosis fungoides with the clinical and histological features mimicking inflammatory linear verrucous epidermal nevus (ILVEN) in an 11-year-old boy. Localized linear multiple pruritic verrucous confluent papules and plaques appeared on the his left elbow, forearm and hand for 7 months. Skin biopsies showed characteristic findings of mycosis fungoides (e.g. Pautrier's microabscesses, follicular epitheliotropism, wiry bundles of collagen, etc.). T-cell receptor gene rearrangement analysis in the lesional skin demonstrated rearrangement of the gamma chain. RePUVA (systemic PUVA with retinoic acid) therapy improved his skin lesions and pruritus, but these progressed after discontinuation of treatment. Thus, lesions mimicking ILVEN can be an unusual and potentially misleading presentation of mycosis fungoides.

Notizen: We report three patients presented with clinical features of Ofuji's papuloerythroderma (pruritic erythematous papules and extensive erythema sparing all skin folds), however, showing histopathological findings of mycosis fungoides (Pautrier's microabscess, haloed lymphocytes, disproportionate epidermotropism, and wiry collagen bundles). One case was associated with plaque stage of mycosis fungoides and follicular mucinosis. T-cell receptor (TCR) gene rearrangement analysis in the lesional skin tissue demonstrated rearrangement of the gamma chain in all cases. HTLV-1 serology was negative for two patients who conducted HTLV-1 test. We think that Ofuji's papuloerythroderma might be a variant of early mycosis fungoides rather than secondary skin manifestations to certain cutaneous inflammatory diseases.

Notizen: We report three children with clinical features of pityriasis lichenoides (scaly red to brown papules and macules) in whom there were histopathological findings of mycosis fungoides (disproportionate epidermotropism, Pautrier’s microabscesses, and wiry and coarse collagen bundles). Immunohistochemical staining revealed a prevalence of T lymphocytes in the infiltrate. T-cell receptor gene rearrangement analysis in lesional skin demonstrated rearrangement of the gamma chain in all cases. Human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1 serology was negative in the two patients in whom this test was performed. Thus, lesions resembling pityriasis lichenoides can be an unusual and potentially misleading presentation of mycosis fungoides.

Notizen: Background β-Catenin, a participant in the Wnt pathway, has been shown to play an important role in the morphogenesis of hair follicles and the formation of hair follicle-related tumours, including pilomatricomas. It has been observed that at least 75% of human pilomatricomas possess activating mutations in β-catenin. These findings suggested that β-catenin plays an important role in the tumorigenesis of pilomatricomas. However, the pattern of β-catenin expression in pilomatricoma tissues is still unclear. Objectives To examine the expression of β-catenin in human pilomatricomas by immunohistochemical staining. Methods Twenty-six formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded samples of pilomatricoma tissue were studied. Results Most transitional cells of pilomatricoma expressed β-catenin strongly, but the basophilic cells and shadow cells did not. β-Catenin showed a prominent membranous immunoreactivity and a small amount of condensed cytoplasmic staining, but there was definitely no evidence of nuclear positivity. Conclusions These findings imply that β-catenin is primarily involved in cell–cell adhesion rather than cellular proliferation during pilomatricoma pathogenesis, and suggest that if β-catenin is involved in pilomatricoma tumorigenesis and tumour growth, it plays an indirect role.

Notizen: Abstract Background: To assess the accuracy of spiral computed tomography (CT) in predicting the resectability of Klatskin tumor as determined by vascular invasion. Methods: Twenty-one consecutive patients with Klatskin tumor who had undergone laparotomy were included in this study. The preoperative thin-section (5-mm-thick) spiral CT scans of these patients were assessed for the surgical resectability of tumor by evaluating the vascular invasion. The criterion for vascular invasion indicating unresectability was the tumoral invasion of the proper hepatic artery or main portal vein or simultaneous invasion of one side of the hepatic artery and the other side of the portal vein. Results: All nine patients with tumors thought to be unresectable on the basis of CT findings had tumors that were unresectable at surgery (positive predictive value, 100%). Of 12 patients with tumors thought to be resectable, six had resectable tumors (negative predictive value, 50%). Spiral CT failed to detect small hepatic metastasis (n= 1), lymph node metastasis (n= 1), extensive tumor (n= 2) and variation of bile duct (n= 2), which precluded surgical resection. Conclusion: Spiral CT is a reliable method for detecting vascular invasion and unresectable tumors. However, it has limitations in detecting variations of the bile duct or the intraductal extent of tumor.

Beschreibung: 18 F-FDG PET is an effective method of predicting recurrence of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) after liver transplantation. We compared recently introduced metabolic and volumetric 18 F-FDG PET/CT indices with the current clinicopathologic predictors for ability to predict recurrence. Methods: In total, 110 HCC patients who underwent 18 F-FDG PET and liver transplantation were enrolled. On PET, SUVs and tumor-to-background ratios (TBRs) were measured as metabolic activity indices. Various metabolic tumor volumes and uptake-volume products (UVP) were also measured as volumetric indices. The ability of these indices and other clinicopathologic factors to predict recurrence was compared. Results: All metabolic and volumetric indices were significant for recurrence prediction on receiver-operating-characteristic curve analyses ( P 〈 0.001). On univariate survival analyses, all PET indices—as well as tumor size, tumor number, the Milan criteria, tumor grade, vascular invasion, and T-stage—were significant factors. However, on multivariate analyses, tumor size, tumor grade, maximum TBR, and UVP calculated by inferior vena cava activity were significant factors ( P = 0.004, 0.014, 0.009, and 0.021, respectively). When the Milan criteria and PET factors were included in the multivariate analysis, the Milan criteria ( P = 0.029), maximum TBR ( P 〈 0.001), and UVP ( P = 0.016) were significant. Conclusion: Volumetric and metabolic activity indices of 18 F-FDG PET are effective predictors of posttransplantation HCC recurrence. In addition to clinicopathologic factors, these indices need to be considered in the selection of candidates for liver transplantation.
