Notizen: [Auszug] Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) can probe the local structure and dynamic properties of liquids and solids, making it one of the most powerful and versatile analytical methods available today. However, its intrinsically low sensitivity precludes NMR analysis of very small samples—as ...

Notizen: Abstract  Flow-cytometric analysis of peripheral blood lymphocytes was performed in 96 patients with chronic idiopathic neutropenia of adults (CINA) and in 36 age- and sex-matched healthy volunteers (controls) using a panel of monoclonal antibodies. Patients were classified arbitrarily into group A (68 patients with 2500–1500 neutrophils/μl) and group B (28 patients with neutrophil counts below 1500/μl). We found that CINA patients displayed low numbers of peripheral blood lymphocytes compared with the controls, which correlated with the numbers of circulating neutrophils. This decrease was due mainly to the reduction of T lymphocytes and, to lesser degree, to the decline of NK cells. Both CD4+ and CD8+ T cells decreased, so that the CD4+/CD8+ cell ratio remained within normal range. Moreover, decrease of T lymphocytes was due essentially to the diminution of CD45RO+ T-cell subsets (CD4+/CD45RO+ and CD8+/CD45RO+), while CD45RA+ T cells did not change. A highly significant positive correlation was found between the numbers of CD45RO+ T cells and the numbers of circulating neutrophils. All these alterations were more pronounced in the patients of group B than in those of group A. NK cells were found to be significantly reduced in the patients of group B, but not in those of group A. The numbers of both CD16+ and CD56+ cells correlated with the numbers of circulating neutrophils. Patients of group B had also low numbers of CD57+ cells, probably due to the reduction of T cells and NK cells. B cells did not change significantly. No significant changes were found also in the numbers of lymphocytes carrying activation-related cell surface markers. We concluded that lymphocyte reduction in CINA patients is due mainly to the diminution of CD45RO+ cells, and we postulated that the most probable explanation for this abnormality is an increased extravasation of these cells, which pass into the tissues following an accelerated adhesion to endothelial cells. This hypothesis and its relationship with the underlying neutropenia in CINA patients remain to be clarified.

Beschreibung: We present paleoseismological trenching results for the active Skinos Fault, which ruptured the surface on the Alkyonides Gulf basin margin in the 1981 Gulf of Corinth earthquake sequence. Three trenches expose evidence of up to six previous events which are comparable to the 1981 deformation in terms of size and geometry. Vertical displacement produced by the 1981 earthquake ranged from 0.45 to 1.3 m at the Bambakies Fan trench sites, decreasing towards the eastern fault tip east of the trenches. Trench 1 reveals two previous events with vertical displacements between 0.5 and 1.2 m since 390 A.D. Trench 2 reveals five or six previous events, but these are not dated. Trench 3 reveals four previous events since 670 A.D. Vertical displacements associated with interpreted paleoearthquakes at the trench sites are ≤1.2 m. The recurrence interval on the Skinos Fault is estimated to average 330 years. However, significant variation in recurrence interval is allowed by the available radiometric dates. Average vertical displacement rates derived from the trenches are in the range 0.7-2.5 mm/yr. A similar long-term average vertical displacement rate of 1.2-2.3 mm/yr is estimated for the lifespan of the basin-bounding fault. This equates to a horizontal seismic strain contribution of ≤2.5 mm/yr from the Skinos Fault. This local seismic strain rate overlaps, within error, with geodetically determined velocities across the Alkyonides Gulf assumed to represent uniform deep-crustal strain. Thus seismic deformation on the basin-bounding fault system may take up the major part of extension across the basin, and aseismic strain is not necessitated by the data. If correct, this would imply that geodetically determined strain rates may be used as a proxy for potential seismic moment release in seismic hazard analyses for this region.

Beschreibung: We present an integrated approach of the seismic structure and activity along the offshore SW Hellenic subduction from combined observations of marine and land seismic stations. Our imaging of the slab top topography from teleseismic receiver function analysis at ocean bottom seismometers supports a trenchward continuation of the along-dip slab faults beneath the Peloponnesus. We further show that their morphostructural control accounts for the backstepping of the thrust contact of the Mediterranean Ridge accretionary wedge over the upper plate. Local seismic activity offshore SW Peloponnesus constrained by ocean bottom seismometer observations reveals a correlation with specific features of the forearc: the Matapan Troughs. We study the Mw6.8 14.02.2008 interplate earthquake offshore SW Peloponnesus and show that its nucleation, rupture zone, and aftershocks sequence are confined to one slab panel between two adjacent along-dip faults and are thus controlled by not only the offshore slab top segmentation but also the upper plate sea-bottom morphology.
