    Description: Abstract: The fate of a Phaeocystis globosa bloom in the Southern North Sea off Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany in Mai 1995 was investigated during a cruise with RV Belgica. We used fatty acids as biomarkers to follow the fate of Phaeocystis-derived biomass of a Phaeocystis dominated spring bloom. The Phaeocystis bloom showed a fatty acid composition with a characteristic dominance of polyunsaturated C18-fatty acids, which increased in concentration with number of double bonds up to 18:5 (n-3), and high concentrations of 20:5 (n-3) and 22:6 (n-3). In contrast to most previous studies, fatty acid analysis of the mesozooplankton community (mainly calanoid copepods) and meroplankton (Carcinus maenas megalope) demonstrated that Phaeocystis was a major component in the diet of these organisms. Massive accumulations of amorphous grey aggregates, in which Phaeocystis colonies were major components, were dominated by saturated fatty acids and only few of the polyunsaturated C18-fatty acids. A hydrophobic surface slick that covered the water surface during the bloom showed very similar patterns. Foam patches contained few Phaeocystis-typical fatty acids, but increased amounts of diatom-typical compounds such as 16:1 (n-7) and 20:5 (n-3), and 38% fatty alcohols, indicating that wax esters dominated the lipid fraction in the foam with ca. 76% (w/w). The fatty acid compositions of surface sediment showed that no sedimentation of fresh Phaeocystis occurred during the study. The results indicate that diverse processes degrade Phaeocystis -derived organic matter while floating or in suspension, and little evidence for a massive sedimentation of the Phaeocystis bloom.

    Description: Measuring the Earth energy imbalance (EEI) at the top of the atmosphere, is challenging as it is a globally integrated variable whose variations are small (0.5-1 W.m−2) compared to the amount of energy entering the climate system (~ 340 W/m²). Accuracies better than 0.1 W/m² are needed to evaluate the temporal variations of the EEI at decadal and longer time-scales. The CERES experiment provides EEI time variations with a typical uncertainty of ± 0.1 W/m² and shows a trend in EEI of 0.50 +/- 0.47 W/m² per decade over the period 2005-2019.The combination of space altimetry and space gravimetry measurements provides an estimate of the global ocean heat content (GOHC) change which is an accurate proxy of EEI (because 〉90% of the excess of energy stored in response to the EEI is accumulated in the ocean in the form of heat). In Marti et al. (2021), the GOHC was estimated at global scales based on the combination of space gravimetry and altimetry measurements over 2002-2016. Changes in the EEI were then derived with realistic estimates of its uncertainty.Here we present the improvements brought to the GOHC and EEI over an extended period (2002-2021), such as the calculation of the expansion efficiency of heat over the total water column, the improvement of barystatic sea level change solution, the empirical correction of the wet tropospheric correction of Jason-3 altimeter measurements (Barnoud et al., 2022).The space geodetic GOHC-EEI product based on space gravimetry and altimetry is available on AVISO at https://doi.org/10.24400/527896/a01-2020.003.

    Notes: Abstract Conversion factors for calculating carbon biomass ofPhaeocystis sp. colonies and free-living cells were determined from microscopic observations and chemical analysis conducted on cultured and naturalPhaeocystis sp. populations originating from the Southern Bight of the North Sea in 1986 and 1987. They allow calculation, in terms of carbon biomass, of the different forms ofPhaeocystis sp. that succeed each other when the population is growing, on the basis of microscopic observations. The latter include enumerations of free-living cells (flagellated and non-motile) and colonies, as well as colonial biovolume measurement. Specific application to natural populations from Dutch coastal waters during spring 1986 shows that more than 90% ofPhaeocystis sp. carbon biomass is under colonial form, most of it exceeding the grazing characteristics of current zooplankton at this period of the year. Detailed analysis of seasonal changes shows in addition that the size of the colonies greatly increases during the course ofPhaeocystis sp. flowering, reaching sizes as high as 1 mm diameter at the top of the bloom when nutrients are depleted. Physiologically this corresponds to an enhanced synthesis of mucilaginous substances, with the decrease of available nutrients leading to an increasing contribution of the matrix to the total colonial carbon during the course of the bloom. Carbon content ofPhaeocystis sp. colonies therefore greatly varies with their size, ranging from 0.3 to 1430 ngC colony−1.

    Notes: Abstract  Blood-brain barrier (BBB) permeability increases prior to the development of clinical signs in early-stage multiple sclerosis (MS). Detection of subtle changes would thus be helpful for diagnostic purposes and rapid therapeutic decisions before new episodes. Since multiple sclerosis and experimental allergic encephalomyelitis (EAE) have numerous common features, in particular BBB-permeability characteristics, and since we have previously shown that BBB localization is disturbed by tumors, embolism, and mannitol injection, we investigated BBB-liposome permeability in an EAE rat model. Twenty young male Lewis rats received a single intradermal inoculation of guinea-pig spinal cord. The effect of the Freund’s adjuvant and spinal cord alone on brain permeability were also assessed. In order to compare solution permeability and liposome localization, radioactive liposomes and, 1 h later, 99mTc-DTPA were injected intravenously. Scintigraphic acquisitions were obtained to follow the biodistribution of radioactivity in the whole body. Each rat was subjected to a first examination before inoculation and then every two days until completion and may be considered as its own control. EAE induced a previously unreported increase in global-body permeability, probably due to inflammation. Liposome brain localization and brain/heart ratio were significantly different between normal animals and those with early-stage EAE (before appearance of clinical signs) and distinguished between different disease stages in clinically patent EAE. The index of disease progression was modified earlier than with 99mTc-DTPA injection. One explanation may be particle pick-up by circulating macrophages, which cross the BBB during this pathology. For clinical applications, experiments must be confirmed on models more reliable for human multiple sclerosis.

    Notes: This paper deals with the determination of electron density in a pulsed surface wave discharge (frequency ω/2π=1.1 GHz, pulse duration τ∼10 μs), in an air-like mixture at about 10 Torr in a capillary tube (inside diameter 1.5 mm). A time-resolved diagnostic based on microwave interferometry is developed. It is shown that it provides both the collision frequency ν and the electron density ne except when ν/ω exceeds a certain value (5 for these operating parameters).

    Notes: Abstract Intestinal morphogenesis and differentiation are dependent on heterotypic cell interactions between embryonic epithelial cells (endoderm) and stromal cells (mesenchyme). Extracellular matrix molecules represent attractive candidates for regulators of these interactions. The structural and functional diversity of the extracellular matrix as intestinal development proceeds is demonstrated by 1) spatio-temporal specific expression of the classically described constituents, 2) the finding of laminin and collagen IV variants, 3) changes in the ratio of individual constituent chains, and 4) a stage-specific regulation of basement membrane molecule production, in particular by glucocorticoids. The orientation/assembly of these extracellular matrix molecules could direct precise cellular functions through interactions via integrin molecules. The involvement of extracellular matrix, and in particular basement membrane molecules in heterotypic cell interactions leading to epithelial cell differentiation, has been highlighted by the use of experimental models such as cocultures, hybrid intestines and antisense approaches. These models allowed us to conclude that a correct elaboration and assembly of the basement membrane, following close contacts between epithelial and fibroblastic cells, is necessary for the expression of differentiation markers such as digestive enzymes.
