Notes: Abstract The pigment fingerprints, determined by HPLC, of suspended matter from different areas of the German Bight and from the Elbe Estuary are presented. These include areas with suspended matter concentrations varying between 10 mg l−1 in the deeper waters in the middle of the Bight and 150 mg l−1 in the Elbe mouth. Pigment data allows the identification of three groups of suspended matter (marine, turbidity zone and Elbe) for the numerous different locations. The changes in pigment concentrations in the suspended matter over tidal cycles are considered. The presence of pigments and pigment breakdown productsi.e. lutein and chlorophyllides is used to assess the possible condition of the phytoplankton present in the suspended matter. These pigment characteristics are compared with the loading of the heavy metals cadmium, copper, manganese, iron, zinc and lead in the particulate matter. It has been demonstrated that the pigments of the planktonic material can be used very effectively to identify different types of suspended matter and that the heavy metal loadings of the suspended matter were significantly correlated with chlorophyll-a.

Description: The firn densification model IMAU-FDM has been used to simulate the firn density profile around Antarctica. The model is forced at the surface with climate data from the RACMO2.3 regional climate model. Here we provide the depth of three key firn density layers below the surface (750, 800 and 830 kgm^-3), averaged over the period 1979-2013. The data is on a horizontal grid of 27x27 km. The depth of each of these density layers was then subtracted from the surface elevation provided by Bedmap2 to determine where permeable firn exists below sea level. This defines the "brine zone" - the region where seawater may infiltrate the firn layer. We also provide shapefiles mapping the brine zone for each of three stated densities.

Description: We conducted a mesocosm experiment with an integrated multiple driver design to assess the impact of future global change scenarios on plankton, a key component of marine food webs. The experimental treatments were based on the RCP 6.0 and 8.5 scenarios developed by the IPCC, which were Extended (ERCP) to integrate the future predicted changing nutrient inputs into coastal waters. The mesocosm experiment was conducted over three weeks in late-summer (August-September) 2018. Seawater containing a natural plankton community was collected from the coastal North Sea. At the onset of the experiment, CO2 saturated seawater was added to the ERCP scenario mesocosms to adjust pCO2 and pH levels for each scenario. To create a realistic environment, we also manipulated the atmospheric pCO2 in the enclosed mesocosm tanks throughout the experiment. Seawater temperature was adjusted daily according to the current North Sea temperature measured at the Helgoland Roads for the Ambient, and 1.5°C and 3.0°C warmer for the ERCP 6.0 and ERCP 8.5 scenarios, respectively. Dissolved nutrient concentrations were determined at the onset of the experiment and adjusted to reach the desired N:P ratios. Samples were taken in an interval of 1-3 days depending on the phytoplankton bloom development, and community composition, except for the large mesozooplankton, was monitored throughout the experiment period.
