Notes: [Auszug] The Earth's climate has undergone a global transition over the past four million years, from warm conditions with global surface temperatures about 3 °C warmer than today, smaller ice sheets and higher sea levels to the current cooler conditions. Tectonic changes and their influence ...

Description: We used X-ray fluorescence (XRF) scanning on Site U1338 sediments from Integrated Ocean Drilling Program Expedition 321 to measure sediment geochemical compositions at 2.5 cm resolution for the 450 m of the Site U1338 spliced sediment column. This spatial resolution is equivalent to ~2 k.y. age sampling in the 0-5 Ma section and ~1 k.y. resolution from 5 to 17 Ma. Here we report the data and describe data acquisition conditions to measure Al, Si, K, Ca, Ti, Fe, Mn, and Ba in the solid phase. We also describe a method to convert the data from volume-based raw XRF scan data to a normalized mass measurement ready for calibration by other geochemical methods. Both the raw and normalized data are reported along the Site U1338 splice.

Description: The equatorial Pacific is an important part of the global carbon cycle and has been affected by climate change through the Cenozoic (65 Ma to present). We present a Miocene (12-24 Ma) biogenic sediment record from Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP) Site 574 and show that a CaCO3 minimum at 17 Ma was caused by elevated CaCO3 dissolution. When Pacific Plate motion carried Site 574 under the equator at about 16.2 Ma, there is a minor increase in biogenic deposition associated with passing under the equatorial upwelling zone. The burial rates of the primary productivity proxies biogenic silica (bio-SiO2) and biogenic barium (bio-Ba) increase, but biogenic CaCO3 decreases. The carbonate minimum is at ~17 Ma coincident with the beginning of the Miocene climate optimum; the transient lasts from 18 to 15 Ma. Bio-SiO2 and bio-Ba are positively correlated and increase as the equator was approached. Corg is poorly preserved, and is strongly affected by changing carbonate burial. Terrestrial 232Th deposition, a proxy for aeolian dust, increases only after the Site 574 equator crossing. Since surface production of bio-SiO2, bio-Ba, and CaCO3 correlate in the modern equatorial Pacific, the decreased CaCO3 burial rate during the Site 574 equator crossing is driven by elevated CaCO3 dissolution, representing elevated ocean carbon storage and elevated atmospheric CO2. The length of the 17 Ma CaCO3 dissolution transient requires interaction with a 'slow' part of the carbon cycle, perhaps elevated mantle degassing associated with the early stages of Columbia River Basalt emplacement.

Description: The Paleocene/Eocene (P/E) boundary, at ~55 Ma, is characterized by a transient warm period lasting 10,000 yr. This interval is globally characterized by significant chemical and biological signals. Ocean Drilling Program Core 199-1221C-11X captured the P/E boundary section at a depth of 154 meters composite depth. Biogenic components of the sediment were measured across this interval in order to better define the events that occurred at the P/E boundary in the equatorial Pacific Ocean. A 26-cm interval low in CaCO3 was identified, whereas biogenic silica and organic carbon remained unchanged. Although CaCO3, biogenic silica, and organic carbon (C-org) production is controlled by different constraints, it is unlikely that an environmental factor would cease production by CaCO3-producing organisms without affecting biogenic silica or C-org production. The data indicate that the CaCO3 P/E boundary event was caused by a change in CaCO3 preservation rather than a change in CaCO3 production.
