Notizen: Exteroceptive suppression of the masseter, temporalis and trapezius muscles, produced by mental nerve stimulation, was studied in 46 patients with chronic headaches. The background contracting electromyographic activity prior to stimulation showed no difference between normal subjects and patients with any type of headache. In patients with chronic tension-type headache associated with a disorder of the pericranial muscles, the duration and degree of exteroceptive suppression were lower when compared with normal subjects. A low degree of exteroceptive suppression was observed also in patients suffering from migraine without aura, although exteroceptive suppression in patients suffering from migraine with aura and cluster headache was the same as that in normal subjects. A low degree of exteroceptive suppression may play a role not only in chronic tension-type headache associated with a disorder of the pericranial muscles, but also in migraine without aura.

Notizen: Effects of the substrate temperature and ion incident energy on silicon surface cleaning and hydrogen penetration caused by irradiation with a hydrogen plasma have been investigated using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. A silicon native oxide and a hydrocarbon-contaminated layer were removed only on the condition that the silicon substrate was struck with hydrogen ions having proper kinetic energies of less than 40 eV at temperatures from room temperature to 400 °C. However, the silicon oxide grew either at temperatures below room temperature or at no ion incidence onto the substrate. This oxidation phenomenon was attributed to residual H2O in the vacuum system. On the other hand, hydrogen penetration occurred only on the condition of hydrogen ion bombardment. The amount of penetrated hydrogen increased with substrate temperature and ion incident energy. The amount of penetrated hydrogen was found to be drastically reduced under the condition of ion incident energy of less than 5 eV and a substrate temperature of about room temperature. It is concluded that an oxideless clean surface without hydrogen penetration into silicon bulk is obtained by means of irradiation with a hydrogen plasma having a low ion incident energy (≤5 eV) at room temperature.

Notizen: Silicon surfaces were cleaned using hydrogen electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) plasma, and were analyzed by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy after exposure to air. For cleaning a silicon surface, a threshold density exists to remove a surface oxide layer using hydrogen ECR plasma. Cleaning was promoted when the electron density was higher than the threshold density. The threshold density seems to depend on the base pressure. In the experiment, the threshold density was about 1010 cm−3 at the base pressure of 8×10−7 Torr.

Notizen: For a two-dimensional, stationary, unmagnetized plasma flow around an obstacle, the basic equations of a plasma (Poisson's equation and equations of continuity and momentum) around the near-wake of the obstacle are shown to be self-similar in a limited sense in the case of a constant ion flow velocity (vi,z=constant). For hypersonic plasma flow with Mach numbers 4.0 to 17.5, the evidence of the limited self-similarity is shown experimentally for the distributions of the plasma potential, the plasma density, and ion velocity in the near-wake of the obstacle. A metallic or glass obstacle is used. Charge imbalance is found around the near-wake along the boundary with the hypersonic plasma flow. The remarkable effects of nonzero net space charge on the limited self-similarity are investigated both experimentally and theoretically.

Notizen: Glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) has long been recognized as a classical glycolytic protein; however, previous studies by our group and others have demonstrated that GAPDH is a general mediator initiating one or more apoptotic cascades. Our most recent findings have elucidated that an expression of a pro-apoptotic protein GAPDH is critically regulated at the promoter region of the gene. Apoptotic signals for its subsequent aggregate formation and nuclear translocation are controlled by the respective functional domains harboured within its cDNA component. In this study, coexpression of GAPDH with either wild-type or mutant (A53T) α-synuclein and less likely with β-synuclein in transfected COS-7 cells was found to induce Lewy body-like cytoplasmic inclusions. Unlike its full-length construct, the deleted mutant GAPDH construct (C66) abolished these apoptotic signals, disfavouring the formation of inclusions. The generated inclusions were ubiquitin- and thioflavin S-positive appearing fibrils. Furthermore, GAPDH coimmunoprecipitated with wild-type α-synuclein in this paradigm. Importantly, immunohistochemical examinations of post mortem materials from patients with sporadic Parkinson's disease revealed the colocalized profiles immunoreactive against these two proteins in the peripheral zone of Lewy bodies from the affected brain regions (i.e. locus coeruleus). Moreover, a quantitative assessment showed that about 20% of Lewy bodies displayed both antigenicities. These results suggest that pro-apoptotic protein GAPDH may be involved in the Lewy body formation in vivo, probably associated with the apoptotic death pathway.

Notizen: Abstract To clarify the neuropathological significance of the deposition of N ɛ -carboxymethyl lysine (CML), an advanced glycation endproduct, in astrocytic hyaline inclusions in familial amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (FALS), autopsy specimens from five members of two different families who had the superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1) gene mutations were analysed. Immunohistochemically, most of the neuronal and astrocytic hyaline inclusions were intensely stained by the antibody against CML. The distributions and intensities of the immunoreactivities for CML and SOD1 were similar in the inclusions in both cell types. Immunoelectron microscopy showed that both inclusions consisted of CML-positive granule-coated fibrils and granular materials. No significant CML or SOD1 immunoreactivity was observed in the neurons and astrocytes of the normal control subjects. Our results suggest that astrocytic hyaline inclusions contain CML and SOD1 in FALS patients with SOD1 gene mutations, and that the formation of CML-modified protein (probably CML-modified SOD1) is related to the cell degeneration.

Notizen: Abstract In cerebral ischemia of different degrees, the amplitudes of somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) are facilitated or depressed. Different mechanisms might be responsible for the explanation of the contradictory phenomena. SEPs obtained using the paired stimulation method were employed in trying to find out the role of the functional changes of the inhibitory system in the brain during ischemia. Eight rabbits were used for recording the amplitude recovery curve of paired SEPs in the normal state, and the other ten were used for recording the recovery curve in different cerebral ischemic degrees. Cerebral ischemia was induced by the iron particle injection method. The attenuation of the depressed recovery function of the paired SEP amplitudes was detected during cerebral ischemia when SEP amplitudes were either facilitated or depressed. The results indicate that the function of the inhibitory system in the brain is selectively vulnerable during cerebral ischemia.

Notizen: Abstract To clarify the biological significance of the neuronal Lewy body-like hyaline inclusions and astrocytic hyaline inclusions characteristically found in patients with familial amyotrophic lateral sclerosis with superoxide dismutase-1 (SOD1) gene mutations and in transgenic mice expressing human SOD1 with G85R mutation, the detailed protein composition in both types of inclusions was immunohistochemically analyzed using 45 different antibodies. Both types of inclusions had very strong immunoreactivity for SOD1. The SOD1-positive inclusions in both cell types were also immunoreactive for the insoluble advanced glycation endproducts (AGEs) such as N ɛ-(carboxymethyl)lysine (CML), pyrraline and pentosidine: both inclusions in both conditions were ultrastructurally composed of the granule-coated fibrils that had immunoreactivities to CML and pyrraline. Both types of inclusions were negative for stress-response proteins (SRPs), 4-hydroxy-2-nonenal (HNE), acrolein, nitric oxide synthases (NOSs) and nitrotyrosine as representative markers of oxidative stress. The neurons and astrocytes of the normal individuals and non-transgenic mice showed no significant immunoreactivity for SOD1, AGEs, SRPs, HNE, acrolein, NOSs or nitrotyrosine. Our results suggest that a portion of the SOD1 composing both type of inclusions, probably toxic mutant SOD1, is modified by the AGEs, and that the formation of the AGE-modified SOD1 is one of the mechanisms responsible for the aggregation involving no significant oxidative mechanisms.
