Notizen: Abstract The Kreiss Matrix Theorem asserts the uniform equivalence over allN ×N matrices of power boundedness and a certain resolvent estimate. We show that the ratio of the constants in these two conditions grows linearly withN, and we obtain the optimal proportionality factor up to a factor of 2. Analogous results are also given for the related problem involving matrix exponentialse At . The proofs make use of a lemma that may be of independent interest, which bounds the arc length of the image of a circle in the complex plane under a rational function.

Notizen: Summary We study the difference equations obtained when a linear multistep method is applied to the scalar test equationdy/dt=λy and constant stepsizeh. LetS be the region of the absolute stability of the method, and letD be a closed subset ofS (on the Riemann sphere $$\mathbb{C}$$ ). It is shown that the solutions of these difference equations are bounded forn≧0, uniformly for λh∈D.S is itself closed in $$\mathbb{C}$$ iff ∂S is free of cusps. The question is studed by means of contractivity analysis and a matrix theorem, derived from the matrix theorem of Kreiss.

Notizen: Abstract. A fractional step numerical method is developed for the nonlinear partial differential equations arising in chemotaxis models, which include density-dependent diffusion terms for chemotaxis, as well as reaction and Fickian diffusion terms. We take the novel approach of viewing the chemotaxis term as an advection term which is possible in the context of fractional steps. This method is applied to pattern formation problems in bacterial growth and shown to give good results. High-resolution methods capable of capturing steep gradients (from CLAWPACK) are used for the advection step, while the A-stable and L-stable TR-BDF2 method is used for the diffusion step. A numerical instability that is seen with other diffusion methods is analyzed and eliminated.

Beschreibung: Applying probabilistic methods to infrequent but devastating natural events is intrinsically challenging. For tsunami analyses, a suite of geophysical assessments should be in principle evaluated because of the different causes generating tsunamis (earthquakes, landslides, volcanic activity, meteorological events, and asteroid impacts) with varying mean recurrence rates. Probabilistic Tsunami Hazard Analyses (PTHAs) are conducted in different areas of the world at global, regional, and local scales with the aim of understanding tsunami hazard to inform tsunami risk reduction activities. PTHAs enhance knowledge of the potential tsunamigenic threat by estimating the probability of exceeding specific levels of tsunami intensity metrics (e.g., run-up or maximum inundation heights) within a certain period of time (exposure time) at given locations (target sites); these estimates can be summarized in hazard maps or hazard curves. This discussion presents a broad overview of PTHA, including (i) sources and mechanisms of tsunami generation, emphasizing the variety and complexity of the tsunami sources and their generation mechanisms, (ii) developments in modeling the propagation and impact of tsunami waves, and (iii) statistical procedures for tsunami hazard estimates that include the associated epistemic and aleatoric uncertainties. Key elements in understanding the potential tsunami hazard are discussed, in light of the rapid development of PTHA methods during the last decade and the globally distributed applications, including the importance of considering multiple sources, their relative intensities, probabilities of occurrence, and uncertainties in an integrated and consistent probabilistic framework.
