    Notes: Methacrylic acid (MAA) was grafted onto polyethylene (PE) surfaces by simultaneous irradiation with UV rays in the liquid phase to estimate hydrophilic and mechanical properties for MAA-grafted PE plates. The amount of grafted MAA increased sigmoidally with UV irradiation time, and the higher grafted amount was obtained at higher monomer concentrations. With an increase in grafting of MAA, the wettabilities from the contact angles of water were enhanced and the refractive indices from the ellipsometry decreased. Though the contact angles remained constant above the grafted amount of 0.02 mmol/cm2, the refractive indices approached the value of PMAA around 0.009 mmol/cm2, indicating that the PE surfaces were fully covered with grafted PMAA chains. Then, at a fixed grafted amount, the grafted layer can absorb more water and the grafted PE plates possessed higher tensile shear adhesive strength, in case grafting was carried out at lower monomer concentrations. Surface properties depended on the density of carboxyl group at the surfaces of grafted layers, whereas adhesive properties depended on the structural properties of grafted chains as well as on the density of carboxyl group of the whole grafted layers.

    Notes: Abstract We describe a rare case of a tumor resembling dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumor. A 3-year-old girl had a generalized convulsion as the initial symptom, without other neurological deficits. Computed tomography showed a hypodense lesion with calcific hyperdensity in the left frontal lobe associated with deformity of the overlying calvarium. Four months later, she had a second seizure, and computed tomographic scan showed that the lesion had increased in size. Subtotal removal of the tumor was performed, and the postoperative course was uneventful without radiation therapy. Histological examination revealed a cortical lesion in which an oligodendrocyte-like area and an astrocyte-like area with cytological atypia were observed. Although the clinical course and the radiological findings closely resembled those of dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumor, specific glioneuronal elements were not found histologically. Daumas-Duport reported a complex form of dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumor that contained glial nodules in addition to a specific glioneuronal element. The histological findings of the glial nodules in this case were quite similar to those she described. We conclude that this could be an unclassified tumor closely resembling dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumor without a specific glioneuronal element.

    Description: Background: Renal toxicity is a clinical problem that affects 28 - 42% of patients undergoing treatment with cisplatin. Renal toxicity can be minimized by high volume hydration with mannitol diuresis. Recent reports have shown that cisplatin induces depletion of Mg and that Mg supplementation can reduce renal toxicity. We hypothesized that Mg infusion combined with low volume hydration may not be sufficient to overcome cisplatin-induced renal toxicity. Methods: In total, 85 patients with lung cancer receiving their first cycle of cisplatin-based chemotherapy at the Osaka City University Hospital were classified into three groups: those administered high volume hydration without Mg infusion (high-volume Mg-), high volume hydration with Mg infusion (high-volume Mg+), and with low volume hydration with Mg infusion (low-volume Mg+). Serum creatinine (sCr) and creatinine clearance (CrCl) were examined before and after treatment with cisplatin. Multivariable analysis was carried out to identify the most important contributing factors. Results: There were no significant differences in pre-treatment sCr levels or CrCl between groups. In the high-volume Mg- group, post-treatment sCr significantly increased compared with pre-treatment levels, while post-CrCl significantly decreased compared with pre-treatment CrCl (p 〈 0.001 and p 〈 0.001, respectively). In the high-volume Mg+ group, there was no significant difference between pre- and post-treatment levels of sCr, or between pre- and post-treatment CrCl (p = 0.118 and p = 0.254, respectively). In the low-volume Mg+ group, there was a trend towards increased sCr levels and decreased CrCl after treatment (p = 0.068 and p = 0.055, respectively). Multivariate analysis revealed that the absence of Mg infusion and low-volume hydration were both independent factors for decreased CrCl (p 〈 0.001 and p = 0.001, respectively). Conclusions: High-volume hydration and Mg infusion reduces the renal toxicity induced by cisplatin. A low-volume Mg+ regimen may be considered for patients with adequate renal function.     Description: Tau is a microtubule (MT)-associated protein that regulates MT dynamics in the axons of neurons. Tau binds to MTs via its C-terminal MT-binding repeats. There are two types of tau, those with three (3R) or four (4R) MT-binding repeats; 4R tau has a stronger MT-stabilizing activity than 3R tau. The MT-stabilizing activity of tau is regulated by phosphorylation. Interestingly, both the isoform and phosphorylation change at the time of neuronal circuit formation during postnatal development; highly phosphorylated 3R tau is replaced with 4R tau, which is less phosphorylated. However, it is not known how the transition of the isoforms and phosphorylation are regulated. Here, we addressed this question using developing mouse brains. Detailed analysis of developing brains revealed that the switch from 3R to 4R tau occurred during postnatal day 9 (P9) to P18 under the same time course as the conversion of phosphorylation from high to low. However, hypothyroidism, which is known to delay brain development, delayed the timing of tau dephosphorylation but not the exchange of isoforms, indicating that isoform switching and phosphorylation are not necessarily linked. Furthermore, we confirmed this finding by using mouse brains that expressed a single isoform of human tau. Human tau, either 3R or 4R, reduced phosphorylation levels during development even though the isoform did not change. We also found that 3R tau and 4R tau were phosphorylated differently in vivo even at the same developmental days. These results show for the first time that the phosphorylation and isoform alteration of tau are regulated differently during mouse development.
