    Notes: Abstract Regimental intravenous injections of counter-ion complexes consisting of a group A streptococcal lipoteichoic acid and methylated bovine serum albumin given as a stabilized water-in-oil double emulsion elicited strong antibody responses in rabbits to teichoic acid accompanied by weak to nonexistent humoral responses to the protein; hyperimmunization with these complexes resulted in nephropathy associated with the formation of renal casts, the presence of proteinuria, and kidney swelling. When rabbits were immunized with the complex and then later challenged with soluble, non-complexed and non-immunogenic teichoic acid alone, teichoic acid, antibody, and complement were demonstrable in the glomeruli. This suggested that a humoral immune response directed towards the teichoic acid could lead to a renal dysfunction and that teichoic acid, under certain circumstances, could play some role in immune-dependent pathogenesis.

    Notes: Pseudomonas syringae pv. phaseolicola (Pph) race 4 strain 1302A carries avirulence gene avrPphB. Strain RJ3, a sectoral variant from a 1302A culture, exhibited an extended host range in cultivars of bean and soybean resulting from the absence of avrPphB from the RJ3 chromosome. Complementation of RJ3 with avrPphB restored the race 4 phenotype. Both strains showed similar in planta growth in susceptible bean cultivars. Analysis of RJ3 indicated loss of 〉 40 kb of DNA surrounding avrPphB. Collinearity of the two genomes was determined for the left and right junctions of the deleted avrPphB region; the left junction is ≈ 19 kb and the right junction 〉 20 kb from avrPphB in 1302A. Sequencing revealed that the region containing avrPphB was inserted into a tRNALYS gene, which was re-formed at the right junction in strain 1302A. A putative lysine tRNA pseudogene (ΨtRNALYS) was found at the left junction of the insertion. All tRNA genes were in identical orientation in the chromosome. Genes near the left junction exhibited predicted protein homologies with gene products associated with a virulence locus of the periodontal pathogen Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans. Specific oligonucleotide primers that differentiate 1302A from RJ3 were designed and used to demonstrate that avrPphB was located in different regions of the chromosome in other strains of Pph. Deletion of a large region of the chromosome containing an avirulence gene represents a new route to race change in Pph.

Arthroscopic surgery has become an established technique in many centres of the world and in most instances, is done on an out-patient basis. Partial meniscectomy and other operative procedures involve either two or three portals of entry into the joint, with visual triangulation of instruments to the area of the pathology.

    Notes: Summary The objectives of this investigation were (i) to develop simple field-test procedures for examining the cardio-respiratory and muscular strength fitness of lower-limb disabled individuals and (ii) to compare fitness levels across disabilities and physical activity levels. Forty-nine disabled adults (42 males and 7 females) were classified according to (i) functional and/or muscular deficit and, (ii) level of habitual physical activity. A forearm ergometer test was used to determine peak oxygen intake ( $$\dot V$$ O2 peak). Sex-specific regression equations developed from the direct test were used in conjunction with a modified åstrand-Ryhming equation to predict $$\dot V$$ O2 peak from sub-maximal test results. Likewise, an equation was developed to predict isokinetic upper body strength (UBS) from cable tensiometry and hand grip force. The predictive power of the sub-maximal ergometer test was fair (r=0.67), while the isometric strength measurements were relatively effective in predicting isokinetic total UBS (r=0.82). Class 1 differed significantly from all other classes with respect to $$\dot V$$ O2 peak and UBS. The more active individuals also achieved significantly higher scores (p〈0.05) for both variables. This study shows that an estimate of peak oxygen intake and UBS can be obtained from simple field tests and that active disabled individuals are more fit than their inactive counterparts.

    Notes: Zinc polycarboxylate cement (PAZ) was shown to actively bond to 45Ca in vitro, with maximum uptake occurring at a Ca+2 concentration of 0.2 mg/ml. When the resultant PAZ-45Ca complex was subsequently incubated in the presence of high levels of unlabeled Ca+2, there was an exchange between the 45Ca bond to the cement and the Ca+2 in solution. When PAZ prepared using 65Zn was incubated with high levels of Ca+2, there was no exchange between the Ca and the 65Zn. 14C-PA failed to be taken up by L-cells in tissue culture, during 16 division cycles. Using radioactive PAZ prepared from 14C-PA, the PA moiety of the cement was shown to be extremely insoluble and stable in vivo.
