    Description: 〈title xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"〉Abstract〈/title〉〈p xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xml:lang="en"〉The total meridional heat transport (MHT) is relatively stable across different climates. Nevertheless, the strength of individual processes contributing to the total transport are not stable. Here we investigate the MHT and its main components especially in the atmosphere, in five coupled climate model simulations from the Deep‐Time Model Intercomparison Project (DeepMIP). These simulations target the early Eocene climatic optimum, a geological time period with high CO〈sub〉2〈/sub〉 concentrations, analog to the upper range of end‐of‐century CO〈sub〉2〈/sub〉 projections. Preindustrial and early Eocene simulations, at a range of CO〈sub〉2〈/sub〉 levels are used to quantify the MHT changes in response to both CO〈sub〉2〈/sub〉 and non‐CO〈sub〉2〈/sub〉 related forcings. We found that atmospheric poleward heat transport increases with CO〈sub〉2〈/sub〉, while oceanic poleward heat transport decreases. The non‐CO〈sub〉2〈/sub〉 boundary conditions cause more MHT toward the South Pole, mainly through an increase in the southward oceanic heat transport. The changes in paleogeography increase the heat transport via transient eddies at the northern mid‐latitudes in the Eocene. The Eocene Hadley cells do not transport more heat poleward, but due to the warmer atmosphere, especially the northern cell, circulate more heat in the tropics, than today. The monsoon systems' poleward latent heat transport increases with rising CO〈sub〉2〈/sub〉 concentrations, but this change is counterweighted by the globally smaller Eocene monsoon area. Our results show that the changes in the monsoon systems' latent heat transport is a robust feature of CO〈sub〉2〈/sub〉 warming, which is in line with the currently observed precipitation increase of present day monsoon systems.〈/p〉
    Description: Plain Language Summary: In the Earth's climate system both the atmosphere and the ocean are transporting heat through different processes from the tropics toward the poles. We investigate the transport of the atmosphere in several climate model set ups, which aim to simulate the very warm climate of the early Eocene (∼56–48 Myr ago). This period is relevant, because the atmospheric CO〈sub〉2〈/sub〉 concentration was close to our pessimistic projection of CO〈sub〉2〈/sub〉 concentration for the end of the century. In our study we separate the results into transport changes due to the different set up of the Eocene, and transport changes due to larger CO〈sub〉2〈/sub〉 concentration values. We found that with rising CO〈sub〉2〈/sub〉 values the atmosphere transports more heat from the tropics to the poles. The different location of the continents and seas is influencing the heat transport of the midlatitude cyclones. The Eocene tropical meridional overturning circulation's poleward heat transport does not increase, but it circulates more heat than today. The monsoon systems seem to be affecting a globally smaller area in the Eocene, but they are also more effective in transporting heat. This conclusion is in line with the observation, that current day monsoon systems' precipitation increases, as our CO〈sub〉2〈/sub〉 concentration rises.〈/p〉

    Description: Small-scale variation in wind stress due to ocean–atmosphere interaction within the atmospheric boundary layer alters the temporal and spatial scale of Ekman pumping driving the double-gyre circulation of the ocean. A high-resolution quasigeostrophic (QG) ocean model, coupled to a dynamic atmospheric mixed layer, is used to demonstrate that, despite the small spatial scale of the Ekman-pumping anomalies, this phenomenon significantly modifies the large-scale ocean circulation. The primary effect is to decrease the strength of the nonlinear component of the gyre circulation by approximately 30%–40%. This result is due to the highest transient Ekman-pumping anomalies destabilizing the flow in a dynamically sensitive region close to the western boundary current separation. The instability of the jet produces a flux of potential vorticity between the two gyres that acts to weaken both gyres.

    Description: North Atlantic late Pleistocene climate (60,000 to 11,650 years ago) was characterized by abrupt and extreme millennial duration oscillations known as Dansgaard-Oeschger (D-O) events. However, during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) 23,000 to 19,000 cal years ago (23 to 19 ka), no D-O events are observed in the Greenland ice cores. Our new analysis of the Greenland δ18O record reveals a switch in the stability of the climate system around 30 ka, suggesting that a critical threshold was passed. Climate system modeling suggests that low axial obliquity at this time caused vastly expanded sea ice in the Labrador Sea, shifting Northern Hemisphere westerly winds south and reducing the strength of meridional overturning circulation. The results suggest that these feedbacks tipped the climate system into full glacial conditions, leading to maximum continental ice growth during the LGM.

    Description: Contrasting Greenland and Antarctic temperatures during the last glacial period (115,000 to 11,650 years ago) are thought to have been driven by imbalances in the rates of formation of North Atlantic and Antarctic Deep Water (the ‘bipolar seesaw’). Here we exploit a bidecadally resolved 14C data set obtained from New Zealand kauri (Agathis australis) to undertake high-precision alignment of key climate data sets spanning iceberg-rafted debris event Heinrich 3 and Greenland Interstadial (GI) 5.1 in the North Atlantic (~30,400 to 28,400 years ago). We observe no divergence between the kauri and Atlantic marine sediment 14C data sets, implying limited changes in deep water formation. However, a Southern Ocean (Atlantic-sector) iceberg rafted debris event appears to have occurred synchronously with GI-5.1 warming and decreased precipitation over the western equatorial Pacific and Atlantic. An ensemble of transient meltwater simulations shows that Antarctic-sourced salinity anomalies can generate climate changes that are propagated globally via an atmospheric Rossby wave train.

    Notes: Summary The kinetics of the batch degradation of phenol and p-cresol in a dual-substrate system by Pseudomonas putida was investigated. A model was developed which was able to successfully predict phenol and p-cresol levels during batch growth. A constant specific growth rate (μ) was assumed together with the assumption that the biomass yield factors (Y) for growth on phenol and p-cresol were identical. These simplifying assumptions allowed an analytical solution to the model equations to be easily obtained, as well as reducing the number of unknown parameters that required estimation. Phenol and p-cresol were metabolized simultaneously by P. putida. P. putida did not appear to metabolize either of the two substrates preferentially. The rate of utilization of aparticular organic substrate was related to its fraction of the total organic substrate present, i.e., for substrate 1 the assimilation rate depended on S 1/(S 1+S 2), where S iis the concentration of the ith substrate.

    Notes: Fast atom bombardment mass spectra have been obtained of salts of analogues of inorganic pyrophosphoric acid, e.g. substituted methylene bisphonates, and positive ion fast atom bombardment mass spectrometry (FABMS) has proved to be more successful than negative ion FABMS for the analysis of these salts. Owing to the low molecular weight of these analogues, FAMBS of the free acids and the sodium salts does not always give results which are easy to interpret as interference by peaks from the matrix can occur. However, the potassium salts in a 60% glycerol matrix, when bombarded by argon atoms, give good FAB spectra which are relatively free of interfering peaks.
