Summary Report on twilight states in 3 psychotic non-epileptic patients under treatment with psychotropic drugs (Trifluoperazin + Tranylcypromin, Imipramin + Prothiopendyl, Butyrophenon). Psychotropic drugs can produce epileptic twilight states as well as epileptic convulsions and delirium. This epileptic triad may be observed during treatment with convulsive, i.e. all psychotropic drugs, or as a rebound phenomena during withdrawal of hypnotic-anticonvulsive drugs. The decrease of convulsive threshold, often revealed only by means of the EEG, appears to be a therapeutic principle in every kind of psychiatric somatotherapy. In this connection, we also refer to symptoms of the epileptic triad in ECT and in insulincoma. The therapeutic necessity to decrease the convulsive threshold in the treatment of lucid psychoses (as for instance schizophrenia and the so-called affective psychoses) suggests that these conditions are characterized by an abnormal high convulsive threshold.
