    Description: Limited constraints on the variability of the deep‐water production in the Labrador Sea complicate reconstructions of the strength of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) during the Late Quaternary. Large volumes of detrital carbonates were repeatedly deposited in the Labrador Sea during the last 32 kyr, potentially affecting radiogenic Nd isotope signatures. To investigate this the Nd isotope compositions of deep and intermediate waters were extracted from the authigenic Fe‐Mn oxyhydroxide fraction, foraminiferal coatings, the residual silicates and leachates of dolostone grains. We provide a first order estimation of Nd release via dissolution of detrital carbonates and its contribution to the authigenic ԑNd signatures in the Labrador Sea. During the Last Glacial Maximum the Nd isotope signatures in the Labrador Sea would allow active water mass mixing with more radiogenic ɛNd values (−12.6 and −14) prevailing in its eastern part whereas less radiogenic values (ɛNd ∼ −18.4) were found on the western Labrador slope. The deposition of detrital carbonates during Heinrich stadials (2,1) was accompanied by negative detrital and authigenic Nd isotope excursions (ɛNd ∼ −31) that were likely controlled by dissolution of dolostone or dolostone associated mineral inclusions. This highly unradiogenic signal dominated the authigenic phases and individual water masses in the Labrador Sea, serving as potential source of highly unradiogenic Nd to the North Atlantic region, while exported southward. The Holocene authigenic ɛNd signatures of the coatings and leachates significantly differed from those of the detrital silicates, approaching modern bottom water mass signatures during the Late Holocene.
    Description: Plain Language Summary: The Labrador Sea is an important region for deep water formation and for the ocean circulation in the Atlantic region. Over the last 32 thousand years, numerous discharges from melting glaciers added freshwater to the Labrador Sea which could help understand the future effects of current melting glaciers. This information is necessary to better constrain climate predictions in order to gauge the effects on the Global Ocean Water Circulation. However, past deep water production in the Labrador is still poorly constrained, complicating reconstruction of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation on different timescales. In this study we investigated changes in deep and intermediate water mass circulation patterns over the last 32 kyr based on the radiogenic Nd isotope compositions that serve as a water mass circulation proxy. Analysis of four marine sediment cores show that the deposition of large volumes of detrital carbonates during studied period had a large effect on the recorded in the sediment column signals. New data suggest active water mass circulation during the maximum extent of glacial ice sheets. The modern day ocean circulation patterns have emerged during the Late Holocene (6 ka).

    Notes: Abstract Contamination of surface- and groundwaters as a result of anthropogenic nitrate loading is of concern in regions subjected to intense agricultural activities. The capacity of watersheds to absorb, process or release nitrate to outflow drainage waters, however, is poorly constrained. An investigation of in-stream denitrification was conducted in a small stream draining a heavily fertilized agricultural watershed by analyzing natural isotopic abundances of nitrate-nitrogen. Using δ15N isotopic signatures, we show that denitrification plays a large role in reducing nitrate levels during stream transport over a relatively short distance. We found in-situ nitrate losses of up to 50% and a corresponding shift in NO3--δ15N values of 10‰ over a 600 m distance downstream consistent with denitrification. Our results suggest that in-stream nitrate losses must be considered when examining nitrate cycling and contamination in watersheds. Not only should attempts to identify nitrate contamination sources using NO3--δ15N signatures be carried out with caution (as nitrate-N isotopic values can be altered during stream transport such that they no longer reflect the original nitrate source), but in-stream measures of nitrate concentrations aimed at monitoring contamination levels may underestimate nitrate inputs to surface waters due to denitrification during transport.

    Description: We attempt to assess the Holocene surface-subsurface seawater density gradient on millennial time scale based on the reconstruction of potential density (σθ) by combining data from dinoflagellate cyst assemblages and planktic foraminiferal (Neogloboquadrina pachyderma (s)) stable oxygen isotopes (δ18Oc). Following several calibration exercises, the likeliness of favorable seasonal preconditioning to open ocean convection is evaluated. The reconstructed σθ values reveal unfavorable conditions for vertical convection in the western Nordic Seas prior to ~7–6.5 ka B.P., with a westward increase and persistence of surface water buoyancy. Active overturning became more likely after 6.5 ka B.P. as suggested by a reduced and recurrently inverted vertical σθ gradient, while intermittent eastward spreading of lower density surface waters continued to modulate the area of potential overturning. Despite some reservation regarding the accuracy of the σθ values reconstructed, the documentation of relative changes of σθ gradients through time and space is suggested as a helpful tool for the appraisal of past overturning likeliness.

    Description: We document climate conditions from the last interglacial optimum (LIO) or marine isotope stage 5e (MIS 5e) from terrestrial and oceanic sedimentary archives. Terrestrial climate conditions are reconstructed from pollen assemblages, whereas sea-surface temperature and salinity conditions are estimated from dinocyst assemblages and foraminiferal data (both assemblages and stable isotope composition of carbonate shells). LIO data from the eastern Canadian Arctic and northern Labrador Sea led to reconstruct much higher summer air temperature and seasurface temperature than at present by about 5°C. Data from southeastern Canada and southern Labrador Sea also suggest more thermophilic vegetation and warmer conditions although the contrast between LIO and the Holocene is of lesser amplitude. On the whole, the terrestrial and marine data sets from the northwest North Atlantic and adjacent lands suggest limited influence of southward flow from Arctic waters through the east Greenland and Labrador Currents as compared to the modern situation. The compilation of sea-surface reconstructions from the northwest and northeast North Atlantic indicate much reduced longitudinal contrasts of temperatures than at present, thus a more zonal pattern of circulation. The reconstructions also indicate a lower sea-surface salinity than at present, thus stronger stratification of upper water masses, which would be compatible with a reduced North Atlantic deep-water formation.

    Description: The impact of the ongoing anthropogenic warming on the Arctic Ocean sea ice is ascertained and closely monitored. However, its long-term fate remains an open question as its natural variability on centennial to millennial timescales is not well documented. Here, we use marine sedimentary records to reconstruct Arctic sea-ice fluctuations. Cores collected along the Lomonosov Ridge that extends across the Arctic Ocean from northern Greenland to the Laptev Sea were radiocarbon dated and analyzed for their micropaleontological and palynological contents, both bearing information on the past sea-ice cover. Results demonstrate that multiyear pack ice remained a robust feature of the western and central Lomonosov Ridge and that perennial sea ice remained present throughout the present interglacial, even during the climate optimum of the middle Holocene that globally peaked ∼6,500 y ago. In contradistinction, the southeastern Lomonosov Ridge area experienced seasonally sea-ice-free conditions, at least, sporadically, until about 4,000 y ago. They were marked by relatively high phytoplanktonic productivity and organic carbon fluxes at the seafloor resulting in low biogenic carbonate preservation. These results point to contrasted west–east surface ocean conditions in the Arctic Ocean, not unlike those of the Arctic dipole linked to the recent loss of Arctic sea ice. Hence, our data suggest that seasonally ice-free conditions in the southeastern Arctic Ocean with a dominant Arctic dipolar pattern, may be a recurrent feature under “warm world” climate.

    Description: PP23B-1388 The Holocene evolution of the upper ocean in the Nordic Seas is assessed based on the qualitative and quantitative evaluation of 16 dinoflagellate cyst (dinocyst) records retrieved from the warm and saline Atlantic Domain in the east, across the seasonally sea-ice covered Arctic Domain, to the Arctic-outflow influenced Polar Domain in the west. First signs of interglacial conditions are observed from ~11.5 ka BP onwards in the Atlantic Domain, and expanded time-transgressively westward, with deglacial processes appearing to have persisted ~2 kyr longer in the west. No clear peak warming can be observed in the dinocyst data during the interval that is generally considered to correspond to the Holocene climatic optimum, and the disparity between the dinocyst and other phytoplankton records suggests a pronounced seasonality at that time. A slightly freshened upper ocean appears to have facilitated seasonal sea ice formation even at the Vøring Plateau. Despite the strongly contrasting environmental conditions across the Nordic Seas, a basin-wide uniform change in the assemblage compositions is seen between ~7 and 6.1 ka BP, and appears to be linked to the establishment of the modern surface circulation pattern. Potential density estimates for the surface water close to modern convection sites reveals values that would imply an increased likeliness of dense enough surface waters to permit sinking from that time onwards. The changes in the Nordic Seas appear to follow a similar reorganisation in the Labrador Sea and the onset of strong winter convection there. Finally, a gradual eastward expansion of the Arctic Domain can be observed from ~4.5 ka BP onwards, with a delayed consequent reaction of the Atlantic-sourced water inflow at the Vøring Plateau showing a slight recovery of cool taxa from ~2.4 ka BP onwards.

    Description: Highlights • Sea-ice cover limits the accumulation of both coccoliths and alkenones in sediments. • Calcite dissolution in shelf sediments may explain the accumulation of alkenones in the presence of few or no coccoliths. • Non-calcifying haptophytes most likely produce alkenones in nearshore environments. Abstract We determined the abundances and concentrations of coccoliths and alkenones in 66 surface sediment samples from the northwest North Atlantic to evaluate the role that surface ocean temperature, salinity, sea-ice cover, and productivity have on the regional distribution of these two biological remains produced by haptophytes in the photic zone. In areas with sea-ice cover of more than 1 month per year, coccolith and alkenone concentrations in sediments are extremely low to nil. Elsewhere, the distribution of coccolith taxa generally displays strong relationships to water temperature, salinity, and productivity. Coccolithus pelagicus is associated with low summer sea-surface temperatures (〈8°C) and relatively high summer sea-surface salinities (〉33.5), whereas Helicosphaera carteri seems to follow the path of the North Atlantic Drift. The distribution of Emiliania huxleyi, the dominant alkenone producer, is not strongly correlated with that of alkenones. Calcite dissolution in shelf sediments could explain the occurrence of alkenones in the absence of coccoliths but alkenone production by non-calcifying haptophytes seems to also exert some control on alkenone concentrations in surface sediments, thus blurring alkenone abundance links to coccolithophorid production and their relative preservation.
