    Notizen: The two-dimensional random bond Ising ferromagnet with antiperiodic boundaries in one direction has been studied by Monte Carlo simulations. From the overlap distribution function P(q), the scaling behavior of P(q) near q=0 with linear dimension L has been obtained. In contrast to recent simulations of the four-dimensional Ising spin glass, our results are consistent with the predictions of the droplet model.

    Notizen: A 2 (1)/(2) -dimensional, cylindrically symmetric particle in cell program is used to simulate the interaction of a plasma with a positively biased disk covered by a dielectric material (Kapton). Several runs using different combinations of bias voltages and secondary electron yields are discussed. Special attention is paid to the role of the secondaries as the dielectric surface changes from a negative potential to become increasingly positive. This is termed the "snapover'' process. The contribution due to secondaries is examined by plotting the distribution (number versus position) of the particles emitted by the impacting on the dielectric. These plots show that secondaries are drawn back into the dielectric as well as the conductor in the case of snapover. Mechanisms and experimental implications for these particular distributions are discussed.

By leadoffs of the efferent vagal heart nerves the following discharge patterns are found: a) Constant discharging which shows no definite reaction as a result of blood pressure increase through Adrenalin (remains unchanged, increases, or decreases). b) Dischargings synchronous with the stimulation of the respiratory centers corresponding with the activity of the phrenic nerve. c) Heart synchronization discharging patterns. 2. These discharging patterns are specifically associated with different efferent vagal heart nerves. 3. During asphyxia the action potentials of vagal heart nerves, with impulse patterns synchronized with respiration, disappear simultaneously with the phrenic nerve potentials. With renewed respiration the vagal respiratory-synchronous action potentials never appear before the phrenic action potentials, at most later. 4. With a sudden decrease of blood pressure a sudden change of vagal action potentials is not shown, as it is in the case of the sympathetic action potentials. 5. With a sudden increase of blood pressure the sympathetic action potentials disappear immediately, while the vagal action potentials gradually increase with increase in blood pressure. 6. The latent periods between the R-wave in EKG and the appearance of the efferent vagal impulses are measured. 7. The pulse-synchronous patterns are the effectors of the pressoreceptor control cycle. The respiratory-synchronous impulses are definitely not connected with this control cycle. They probably represent a tonic basic innervation of the heart, which permanently lowers the heart frequency and in other cases is responsible for the bradycardia by central stimulation conditions, for example, asphyxia.
    Notizen: Zusammenfassung 1. Bei Ableitungen der efferenten vagalen Herznerven finden sich folgende Entladungsmuster: a) Dauerentladung, welche bei Blutdruckanstieg durch Adrenalin keine eindeutige Reaktion aufweist (unverändert bleibt, zu- oder abnimmt). b) Entladungen synchron mit der Erregung des Atemzentrums bzw. mit der Tätigkeit des N. phrenicus. c) Herzsynchrone Entladungsmuster. 2. Diese Entladungsmuster sind verschiedenen efferenten vagalen Herznerven spezifisch zugeordnet. 3. Während der Asphyxie verschwinden die Aktionspotentiale von vagalen Herznerven mit atemsynchronen Impulsmustern gleichzeitig mit den Phrenicuspotentialen. Bei der Wiederbeatmung erscheinen die vagalen atemsynchronen Aktionspotentiale zeitlich nie vor den Phrenicusaktionspotentialen, höchstens später. 4. Bei plötzlichem Absinken des Blutdruckes zeigt sich keine plötzliche Änderung der vagalen Aktionspotentiale, wie es bei den sympathischen Aktionspotentialen der Fall ist. 5. Bei plötzlichem Anstieg des Blutdruckes verschwinden die sympathischen Aktionspotentiale sofort, während die vagalen sich bei Blutdruckzunahme allmählich vermehren. 6. Die Latenzzeiten von der R-Zacke im EKG bis zum Auftreten der efferenten vagalen Impulse werden gemessen. 7. Die pulssynchronen Impulse sind die Effektoren des pressoreceptorischen Regelkreises. Die atemsynchronen Impulse sind in diesen Regelkreis sicher nicht eingeschaltet. Sie stellen wahrscheinlich eine tonische Grundinnervation des Herzens dar, welche die Herzfrequenz ständig mindert und unter anderem für die Bradykardie bei zentralen Erregungszuständen (z. B. Asphyxie) verantwortlich ist.

    Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: Zusammenfassung Die strukturellen und chemischen Eigenschaften von Pseudotachylyten, die durch seismische Ereignisse entlang einer Pan-Afrikanischen Störungszone in Kenia erzeugt wurden, dokumentieren eine zweistufige Entwicklung. Im ersten Stadium, zu Beginn des Reibungsgleitens, führte die mechanische Zerkleinerung des Ausgangsgesteins zu einem bevorzugten Zerbrechen von Biotit und Hornblende, aufgrund ihrer geringen Bruch- und Scherfestigkeit. Die Produkte dieses ersten Stadiums sind in Form dünner Kataklasitzonen an den Rändern der Pseudotachylitgänge erhalten. Während des zweiten Stadiums kam es aufgrund der Reibungswärme, der Kornverkleinerung und dem bei der Zerstörung von Biotit und Hornblende freigesetzten Wasser zum Aufschmelzen des zermahlenen Gesteins. Die chemische und mineralogische Zusammensetzung der Kataklasite und die zunehmende Temperatur während des seismischen Gleitens waren die wesentlichen Faktoren, die die Zusammensetzung zweier chemisch unterschiedlicher Schmelzen kontrollierten. Während der schnellen Abkühlung kristallisierten Amphibol-Mikrolithe (Schmelze 1) und Plagioklas-Mikrolithe (Schmelze 2) aus den beiden Pseudotachylit-Schmelzen.
    Notizen: Summary The structural and chemical characteristics of pseudotachylytes generated during seismic events along a Pan-African fault zone in Kenya document an evolution consisting of two principal steps. In the first stage, crushing of the host rock during the onset of ‘frictional sliding’ led to preferential disruption of biotite and hornblende, due to their low fracture toughness and low shear yield strength. The products of this first stage are preserved as thin cataclasite zones along the margins of the pseudotachylyte veins. Melting of the crushed host rock occurred during the second stage, due to the heat generated by ‘frictional sliding’, grain size reduction, and the release of water from biotite and hornblende. The chemical and mineralogical composition of the cataclasite and the increasing temperature during seismic slip were the main factors that controlled the composition of two chemically distinct pseudotachylyte melts. During rapid cooling, amphibole microlites (melt 1) and plagioclase microlites (melt 2) crystallized from the two pseudotachylyte melts.

    Notizen: Abstract The electronic structure of the prototypical corner-sharing Sr2CuO3 linear chain compound is investigated by combining several theoretical and experimental techniques. Band structure calculations within the local density approximation and using a local orbital basis provided the relevant orbitals and the transfer integrals for a four-band extended Hubbard pd-model, which was treated by means of exact diagonalization and of quantum Monte Carlo calculations for finite chain clusters. The band structure values of the transfer integrals t pd exceed the corresponding values for layered cuprates. Enhanced values of the intersite Coulomb interaction, V pd = 2 ... 2.5 eV, and a difference between the onsite energies of side and chain oxygen Δpp = 0.5 ... 0.75 eV are deduced from the comparison of the model studies with the intensities of polarization dependent x-ray absorption spectra. The latter reflect the hole distribution over the oxygen sites.

    Notizen: Abstract The Menderes massif consists of a Precambrian Core Series that preserves evidence for a polymetamorphic history and a Paleozoic/Mesozoic Cover Series that experienced only the Alpine tectonometamorphic evolution. Structural, petrographic, and geochronologic investigations in the central Menderes massif demonstrate that (a) part of the metamorphic and structural evolution of the Precambrian basement is older than the undeformed 551±1.4-Ma-old Birgi metagranite, and (b) inferred Alpine fabrics overprinting the Cover Series largely have the same attitudes as the old structures in the much older Core Series. The inferred Alpine fabrics include both contractional and extensional structures. Contraction under greenschist to amphibolite facies conditions resulted in the imbrication of the Core and Cover Series and generated an inverted metamorphic sequence by north-directed thrusting. During Alpine extension, most of the south-dipping thrust faults were reactivated as extensional shear zones under decreasing greenschist facies conditions.

    Notizen: Abstract The high-pressure/low-temperature Maksyutov Complex is situated in the southern Urals between the Silurian/Devonian Magnitogorsk island arc and the East European Platform. The elongated N-S-trending complex is made up of two contrasting tectono-metamorphic units. Unit 1 consists of a thick pile of Proterozoic clastic sediments suggested to represent the passive margin of the East European Platform. The overlying unit 2, composed of Paleozoic sediments, volcanic rocks, and a serpentinite mélange with rodingites, is interpreted as a remnant of the Uralian Paleo-ocean. Devonian eastward subduction of oceanic crust beneath the Magnitogorsk island arc resulted in an incipient blueschist-facies metamorphism of unit 2 indicated by lawsonite pseudomorphs in the rodingites. While unit 2 was accreted to the upper plate, subduction of the continental passive margin caused the high-pressure metamorphism of unit 1. Buoyancy-driven exhumation of unit 1 into the forearc region led to its juxtaposition with unit 2 along a retrograde top-to-the-ENE shear zone. Further exhumation of the Maksyutov Complex into its present tectonic position was accomplished by later shear zones that were active as normal faults and are exposed along the margins of the complex. At the western margin a top-to-the-west shear zone juxtaposed a low-grade remnant of a Paleozoic accretionary prism (Suvanyak Complex) above the Maksyutov Complex. Along the eastern margin a top-to-the-east shear zone and the brittle Main Uralian Normal Fault emplaced the Maksyutov Complex against the Magnitogorsk island arc in the hanging wall.
