Notes: The critical behavior of the RFIM has been a subject of controversy for a long time. After the qualitative analysis of Imry and Ma and the rigorous proof given by Imbrie, it is nowadays accepted that the lower critical dimension of the system is d1=2. Though some general results exist in the mean field approach, the nature of the transition for the real system for d(approximately-greater-than)2 remains less clear. In this work we study, using the Monte Carlo histogram technique and finite size scaling, the three-dimensional RFIM with a symmetric bimodal field distribution. Our results strongly suggest the existence of a tricritical point where the transition crosses over from a second-order transition at low but finite fields to a first-order transition for high fields, in contradiction with previous suggestions issued from standard Monte Carlo simulations. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: In a previous work, a realistic three-dimensional 3-D Ising model of FeCl2 was studied. It consists of triangular lattice planes stacked along the c axis of the crystal, with the following interactions: a nearest neighbor (nn) ferromagnetic one competing with a next-nearest-neighbor (nnn) antiferromagnetic interaction, which causes some degree of frustration in the plane, the planes being weakly coupled by an antiferromagnetic interaction. In fact, the latter is a superexchange interaction, and we have taken into account all the equivalent superexchange paths in the sense of the Anderson rule, which amounts to 12 neighbors in each one of the adjacent planes. In this work we present the preliminary results of a study of the critical exponents of this model using the Monte Carlo histogram method and finite size scaling. The interest of such study lies in the layered structure of this system, which might have an effect on its effective dimensionality at the transition point, and also in the effects of frustration, as well as those of superexchange interactions on the critical exponents. We also show the results obtained by the same method, on the critical exponents of the diluted system in the zero and low magnetic field.

Notes: In order to search for the origin of the deviation of the critical exponents of a FeCl2 model from the three-dimensional (3D) Ising universality class, we have systematically studied by standard and histogram Monte Carlo simulations the influence of different features of that model such as the frustrating in-plane interaction, the super-exchange interaction and the layered character of the lattice on the critical behavior of the system. We show that it is the layered character of this structure which is responsible for the shift of critical exponents with respect to the 3D Ising values. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract Two single-step purification methods were used to isolate the recombinant protein, rBm86, produced in Pichia pastoris. Salting-out results in a compromise between final purity and recovery of rBm86. At 15, 25 and 35% of ammonium sulphate saturation (pH 7), rBm86 concentration in the supernatant phase was proportional to the initial amount of protein. Acid precipitation of contaminants resulted in 98% purity and 98% recovery of rBm86. High aggregation of rBm86, forming particles of 28 nm, changed the isoelectric point of monomers (5.5), considering only the aminoacid sequence, to 4.5 for particles.

Notes: Abstract A competitive enzyme linked immonosorbent assay (ELISA) was developed for quantification of recombinant Bm86 protein (rBm86), antigen of the vaccine GavacTM against the cattle tick Boophilus microplus. Monoclonal antibody (Mab) SSBm1 showed identical recognition to folded and denatured antigen and was used in the competition assay. This ELISA was sensitive enough to detect 60 ng/ml of rBm86. Within-assay coefficient of variation was 5.7 to 6.2 % and between-assay variation was 7.7 to 11.6 %. The level of expression of recombinant Bm86 in Pichia pastoris reached about 2.7 g per liter of culture after 80 hour of fermentation. © Rapid Science Ltd. 1998

Description: As the surface ocean equilibrates with rising atmospheric CO2, the pH of surface seawater is decreasing with potentially negative impacts on coral calcification. A critical question is whether corals will be able to adapt or acclimate to these changes in seawater chemistry. We use high precision CT scanning of skeletal cores of Porites astreoides, an important Caribbean reef-building coral, to show that calcification rates decrease significantly along a natural gradient in pH and aragonite saturation (Omega arag). This decrease is accompanied by an increase in skeletal erosion and predation by boring organisms. The degree of sensitivity to reduced Oarag measured on our field corals is consistent with that exhibited by the same species in laboratory CO2 manipulation experiments. We conclude that the Porites corals at our field site were not able to acclimatize enough to prevent the impacts of local ocean acidification on their skeletal growth and development, despite spending their entire lifespan in low pH, low Omega arag seawater.

Description: Coral calcification is expected to decline as atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration increases. We assessed the potential of Porites astreoides, Siderastrea siderea and Porites porites to survive and calcify under acidified conditions in a 2-year field transplant experiment around low pH, low aragonite saturation (Omega arag) submarine springs. Slow-growing S. siderea had the highest post-transplantation survival and showed increases in concentrations of Symbiodiniaceae, chlorophyll a and protein at the low Omega arag site. Nubbins of P. astreoides had 20% lower survival and higher chlorophyll a concentration at the low Omega arag site. Only 33% of P. porites nubbins survived at low Omega arag and their linear extension and calcification rates were reduced. The density of skeletons deposited after transplantation at the low Omega arag spring was 15–30% lower for all species. These results suggest that corals with slow calcification rates and high Symbiodiniaceae, chlorophyll a and protein concentrations may be less susceptible to ocean acidification, albeit with reduced skeletal density. We postulate that corals in the springs are responding to greater energy demands for overcoming larger differences in carbonate chemistry between the calcifying medium and the external environment. The differential mortality, growth rates and physiological changes may impact future coral species assemblages and the reef framework robustness.
