    Notes: Mineralization of implanted bioprostheses poses a major clinical problem. Crosslinking of collagenous matrices, a process used to render tissues relatively inert and nonbiodegradable, seems to encourage calcification. Residual, noncovalently bound glutaraldehyde, as well as glutaraldehyde crosslinks which can be degraded with time, seem to play a role in this connection.Our findings demonstrate the need to carefully remove noncovalently or labile-associated glutaraldehyde by thorough rinsing or neutralization before implantation. Components of a valve prosthesis such as cusps and aortic wall, which are known to vary in their proportions of collagen, elastin, and noncollagenous proteins and to calcify to different extents, can both be prevented from calcifying if treated with a biphosphonate before implantation. Calcification can also be reduced by selective enzymatic removal of noncollagenous materials. In addition to the age of rats, animals usually used to evaluate calcification, the strain of animal can markedly affect the response. The Fischer-344 rat, a highly inbred animal, will not calcify exhaustively rinsed implants. Our findings suggest that multifactorial approaches may have to be combined to generate the most ideal bioprostheses. These should include careful removal of noncovalently bound glutaraldehyde, neutralization of the nonbifunctionally reacted residues, removal of lipids and noncollagenous proteins (and possibly the more antigenic nonhelical collagen telopeptides), as well as inclusion of agents such as biphosphonates, which by interfering with crystal growth prevent the accumulation of mineral in the interstices of the tissue. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Description: 〈jats:p〉Abstract. The important roles that the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) plays in the central Arctic climate system have been recognized, but the atmospheric boundary layer height (ABLH), defined as the layer of continuous turbulence adjacent to the surface, has rarely been investigated. Using a year-round radiosonde dataset during the Multidisciplinary drifting Observatory for the Study of Arctic Climate (MOSAiC) expedition, we improve a Richardson-number-based algorithm that takes cloud effects into consideration and subsequently analyze the characteristics and variability of the ABLH over the Arctic Ocean. The results reveal that the annual cycle is clearly characterized by a distinct peak in May and two respective minima in January and July. This annual variation in the ABLH is primarily controlled by the evolution of the ABL thermal structure. Temperature inversions in the winter and summer are intensified by seasonal radiative cooling and warm-air advection with the surface temperature constrained by melting, respectively, leading to the low ABLH at these times. Meteorological and turbulence variables also play a significant role in ABLH variation, including the near-surface potential temperature gradient, friction velocity, and turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) dissipation rate. In addition, the MOSAiC ABLH is more suppressed than the ABLH during the Surface Heat Budget of the Arctic Ocean (SHEBA) experiment in the summer, which indicates that there is large variability in the Arctic ABL structure during the summer melting season. 〈/jats:p〉

Abstract For the traditional framework of EM modeling algorithms, the Dirichlet boundary is usually used which assumes the field values are zero at the boundaries. This crude condition requires that the boundaries should be sufficiently far away from the area of interest. Although cell sizes could become larger toward the boundaries as electromagnetic wave is propagated diffusively, a large modeling area may still be necessary to mitigate the boundary artifacts. In this paper, the complex frequency-shifted perfectly matched layer (CFS-PML) in stretching Cartesian coordinates is successfully applied to 2.5D frequency-domain marine controlled-source electromagnetic (CSEM) field modeling. By using this PML boundary, one can restrict the modeling area of interest to the target region. Only a few absorbing layers surrounding the computational area can effectively depress the artificial boundary effect without losing the numerical accuracy. A 2.5D marine CSEM modeling scheme with the CFS-PML is developed by using the staggered finite-difference discretization. This modeling algorithm using the CFS-PML is of high accuracy, and shows advantages in computational time and memory saving than that using the Dirichlet boundary. For 3D problem, this computation time and memory saving should be more significant.

    Description: In this study, the complex frequency-shifted perfectly matched layer (CFS-PML) in stretching Cartesian coordinates, is successfully applied to three-dimensional (3D) frequency-domain marine controlled-source electromagnetic (CSEM) field modelling. The Dirichlet boundary, which is usually used within the traditional framework of EM modeling algorithms, assumes the electric or magnetic field values are zero at the boundaries. This requires the boundaries be sufficiently far away from the sources in the area of interest. To mitigate the boundary artifacts, a large modelling area may be necessary even though cell sizes are allowed to grow toward the boundaries due to the diffusion of the electromagnetic wave propagation. Compared with the conventional Dirichlet boundary, the PML boundary is preferred as the modelling area of interest could be restricted to the target region and only a few absorbing layers surrounding can effectively depress the artificial boundary effect without losing the numerical accuracy. Furthermore, for joint inversion of seismic and marine CSEM data, if we used the PML for CSEM field simulation instead of the conventional Dirichlet, the modeling area for these two different geophysical data collected from the same survey area could the same, which is convenient for joint inversion grid matching. We apply the CFS-PML boundary to 3D marine CSEM modelling by using the staggered finite-difference (SFD) discretization. Numerical test indicates that the modeling algorithm using the CFS-PML also shows good accuracy compared to the Dirichlet. Furthermore, the modeling algorithm using the CFS-PML shows advantages in computational time and memory saving than that using the Dirichlet boundary. For the 3D example in this study, the memory saving using the PML is nearly 42 % and the time saving is around 48% compared to using the Dirichlet.
