Summary Investigations on 24 patients hospitalized for treatment of duodenal ulcer recurrences at the Massachusetts General Hospital revealed that none considered that he had adhered to the prescribed therapy in its entirety. The factors found operative in nonadherence to therapy were presented under four headings: (1) the patient's attitude toward the diagnosis of ulcer; (2) the patient's attitude toward the recommended treatment; (3) the patient's attitude toward the physician; and (4) the response of guilt in the patient who does not adhere to therapy. Cases were presented illustrating the various components in each category, and methods of handling were described.
