Notes: Abstract Mössbauer investigations were performed in the ferrous and ferric form of the ‘picket-fence’ porphyrinato acetato iron complex |Fe(CH3CO2) (TPpivP)|1−,0 at temperatures varying from 1.5–200K and in fields of 0–6.2T. The ferrous complex has an unusually large quadrupole splitting, ΔEQ=+4.25mms−1. The quadrupole splitting in the ferric species, ΔEQ=+1.1mms−1, is as normally found in ferric high-spin iron porphyrins. Spin-Hamiltonian analysis of the magnetic spectra yields zero-field parameters D=−0.9mms−1, E/D=0.33 and magnetic hyperfine parameters Ax,y=−17T, Az=−13.3T in the ferrous high-spin (S=2) complex, and D=7.5cm−1, E/D≈0 and Ax,y,z=20T in the ferric high-spin (S=5/2) species.

Notes: Abstract The divalent high-spin iron in the P460 center of hydroxylamine oxidoreductase and in three possible “picket fence” heme models exhibit extremely large quadrupole splittings (∼4 mms−1). Their isomer shifts of about 1 mms−1 are consistent with the X-ray results of two of the models, i.e. that Fe(II) is pentacoordinated. The coordination geometry of iron deviates considerably from the common fourfold symmetry of the “picket fence” porphyrin due to a CH3CO 2 − ligand. This feature is also reflected by the significant anisotropies of g-factors, A tensor and rhombicity E/D.

Notes: Abstract Mössbauer spectroscopy (20–300 K), magnetic susceptibility measurements (77–350 K), scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction experiments have been performed on two meteorite samples: one from an old fall (Kapoeta) and another from a very recent fall (Al Kidirate). The two specimens differ in their mineralogy. Chondrules appear to be absent in Kapoeta and it is probably a pyroxene-plagioclase achondrite with ferrohypersthene as the most abundant mineral. On the other hand, the Al Kidirate meteorite is an ordinary chondrite and the specimen consists of olivine, orthopyroxene, troilite and kamacite. The Mössbauer measurements confirm the above characterization, showing a paramagnetic doublet for the Kapoeta sample and at least two paramagnetic doublets and magnetic sextets for the Al Kidirate specimens. The former were assigned to Fe in pyroxene sites, while the latter was assigned to Fe in pyroxene, olivine, Fe-S and Fe-Ni alloys. The difference in the mineralogy of the two meteorites has also been reflected in the temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibility. The magnetization and the hyperfine interaction parameters will be discussed in relation to the mineralogy.

Notes: Abstract Mössbauer spectra of triclinic Fe2P2O7 indicate the existence of two crystallographic metal positions in the structure. In the paramagnetic region the two Mössbauer doublets are closely overlapping. The magnetic transition takes place at ≈ 21 K and the saturated fields are around 12 tesla for the two positions. In monoclinic Fe2P4O12 the two octahedrally coordinated metal positions give quite different quadrupole splittings (1.5 and 3 mm/s at room temperature) and hyperfine field values (42 and 12.5 Tesla at 5 K). The transition temperature is at ≈ 18.5 K.
