    Description: The number of well-dated pollen diagrams in Europe has increased considerably over the last 30 years and many of them have been submitted to the European Pollen Database (EPD). This allows for the construction of increasingly precise maps of Holocene vegetation change across the continent. Chronological information in the EPD has been expressed in uncalibrated radiocarbon years, and most chronologies to date are based on this time scale. Here we present new chronologies for most of the datasets stored in the EPD based on calibrated radiocarbon years. Age information associated with pollen diagrams is often derived from the pollen stratigraphy itself or from other sedimentological information. We reviewed these chronological tie points and assigned uncertainties to them. The steps taken to generate the new chronologies are described and the rationale for a new classification system for age uncertainties is introduced. The resulting chronologies are fit for most continental-scale questions. They may not provide the best age model for particular sites, but may be viewed as general purpose chronologies. Taxonomic particularities of the data stored in the EPD are explained. An example is given of how the database can be queried to select samples with appropriate age control as well as the suitable taxonomic level to answer a specific research question.

    Description: The data show the quantitative annual, winter and summer precipitation reconstructions (mm/yr) from southern Iberian Peninsula for the last ~200,000 years (Camuera et al., 2022), based on the previously published fossil pollen data from the Padul-15-05 lake sediment record (Ramos-Román et al., 2018a, b; Camuera et al., 2019, 2021). The Padul-15-05 record, located in southern Spain (37º00'39''N, 3º36'14''W, 726 masl), was retrieved during summer 2015 from the current edge of the lake using a Rolatec RL-48-L hydraulic percussion coring machine. The quantitative precipitation reconstructions were performed using the performance statistics of the Weighted Averaging-Partial Least Squares (WA-PLS)-based transfer function model under cross-validation. This pollen-based transfer function method was run using the C2 program (version 1.7.7) with a modern pollen climate calibration model from the Eurasian Modern Pollen Database v2 (EMPDv2) (Davis et al., 2020).

    Description: Reaching to over 4000 m in altitude, the Bale mountains of south-central Ethiopia comprise the most extensive area of Afro-alpine and sub-alpine Ericaceous vegetation in Africa and host an exceptionally high number of endemic species. Previous pollen analyses of a sediment core of the glacial lake Garba Guracha, located at 3950 m altitude, indicate shifts of the Ericaceous and the Afroalpine belt in relation to climatic changes during the Holocene and imply that the ecosystem has been shaped by natural expansion and contraction of vegetation zones (Umer et al. 2007). At the same time, the significance and timing of the onset of anthropogenic impact, e.g. through grazing and through cutting and burning of Erica scrub, is debated. From Lake Garba Guracha we have retrieved sedimentary ancient DNA targeting the last 4000 years and focussing on plants and diatoms. Positive results were retrieved from nearly all samples. The vegetation revealed by the DNA is characterized by Afro-alpine species in all but the lowest sample, which shows a high number of reads assigned to Erica arborea - absent in the younger samples with ages less than 4000 yrs BP. This supports the previously postulated timing of the contraction of the Ericaceous zone, while, in contrast to pollen, it provides a local picture of the vegetation and reveals a high diversity in herbs and forbs, including endemic taxa. Diatom taxa identified by DNA experience a distinct turnover during the time period analysed, and, together with the aquatic plants, can elucidate lake ecosystem history. Interestingly, sequence data of plants was more consistent between PCR replicates than that of diatoms. Consistency in the plant data between replicates was high to an age of about 2500 yrs BP, while for diatoms, degradation as deduced from rates of success and reproducibility was not as clearly linked to depth. Thus, despite signals of DNA degradation, the results clearly demonstrate that authentic and informative DNA data can be retrieved over millenial timescales from Afro-alpine sites.
