Notizen: Abstract  Tufi di Grotte dei Rossi Inferiori are thick ash deposits, representing the most voluminous stratigraphic unit on Vulcano Island. The deposits are related to hydromagmatic eruption which occurred under shallow water inside a caldera depression. Grain-size data and results of SEM investigation allow the character of the transporting medium, solid material concentration in the cloud during the lateral expansion, and the nature and role of the fluids present at the time of deposition to be constrained. We suggest that the eruption was characterized by closely timed hydromagmatic pulses giving rise to eruption clouds rich in water vapor and steam. The coarser material was not significantly transported in the eruptive cloud and it probably deposited in the caldera depression area. The finer material was extensively transported in the cloud, creating turbulent flows which surmounted the caldera rim barrier and dispersed in a southward direction, forming widespread deposits in the Piano area. Lower concentrated flows produced laminated deposits of more limited dispersion, whereas higher concentrated flows formed more dispersed thicker massive layers.

Beschreibung: Understanding the mechanisms that control the accumulation of large silicic magma bodies in the upper crust is key to determining the potential of volcanoes to form caldera-forming eruptions. Located in one of the most populated regions on Earth, Camp Flegrei is an active and restless volcano that has produced two cataclysmic caldera-forming eruptions and numerous smaller eruptive events over the past 60,000 years. Here, we combine the results of an extensive petrological survey with a thermomechanical model to investigate how the magmatic system shifts from frequent, small eruptions to large caldera-forming events. Our data reveal that the most recent eruption of Monte Nuovo is characterized by highly differentiated magmas akin to those that fed the pre-caldera activity and the initial phases of the caldera-forming eruptions. We suggest that this eruption is an expression of a state shift in magma storage conditions, whereby substantial amounts of volatiles start to exsolve in the shallow reservoir. The presence of an exsolved gas phase has fundamental consequences for the physical properties of the reservoir and may indicate that a large magma body is currently accumulating underneath Campi Flegrei.

Beschreibung: In June-August 2019, one major explosion and two paroxysms occurred at Stromboli volcano (Southern Italy) within only 64 days offering a unique opportunity to study the short-term variations in a basaltic plumbing system that can lead to paroxysmal events.Via a multifaceted approach using clinopyroxene from the summer 2019 paroxysms, we reveal a key role for batches of the volatile-rich deep seated low-porphyritic (lp) magma recharge arriving in the shallow reservoir up to a few days before these events. Our data indicate a rejuvenated Stromboli plumbing system where the extant crystal mush is efficiently permeated by recharge lp-magma with minimum remobilisation promoting a direct linkage between the deeper (lp) and shallow (hp) reservoirs. This sustains the current variability of eruptive styles with near immediate eruptive response to mafic magma recharge. The remarkable agreement between our calculated recharge timescales and the observed variation in time of various monitoring signals strongly supports such a model. Our approach provides vital insights into magma dynamics and their effects on monitoring signals demonstrating that detailed petrological studies integrated with volcano monitoring signals are fundamental for a fast response during a volcanic unrest phase or crisis. This work has been published in Nature Communication: Petrone, C.M et al. Magma recharge and mush rejuvenation drive paroxysmal activity at Stromboli volcano. Nat Commun 13, 7717 (2022). https://doi.org/10.1038/s41467-022-35405-z.

Beschreibung: Turrialba volcano lies in the southern sector of the Central American Volcanic Front (CAVF) in Costa Rica. The geochemistry of major and trace elements, and Sr and Nd isotopes of a selected suite of volcanic rocks ranging in composition from basaltic andesite to dacite and belonging to the last 10 ka of activity of Turrialba volcano is described, together with the He-, Ne-, and Ar-isotope compositions of fluid inclusions hosted in olivine and pyroxene crystals. Most of the variability in the rock chemistry is consistentwith typical trends of fractional crystallization, but there is an outlying group of andesites that displays an adakite-like composition (with a consistent depletion in high-field-strength elements and a marked enrichment in Sr) and low 3He/4He ratios (7.0–7.2 Ra). The trace-element composition of these rocks is typical of subduction-related magmas influenced by an OIB-like component at the source associated with the subduction of the Galapagos seamounts. The 87Sr/86Sr (0.703612–0.703678) and 143Nd/144Nd (0.512960–0.512984) ratios of the bulk rocks vary within narrowranges, and are among the least-radiogenic isotope signatures of the CAVF volcanoes. The 3He/4He ratios measured in fluid inclusions hosted in olivine crystals (up to 8.1 Ra) are among the highest for the CAVF, and indicate that radiogenic 4He from fluids derived fromthe subducting slab contribute negligibly to the mantle wedge. The difference in He isotopes between most of studied rocks and those showing adakite-like features reasonably reflects two distinct components in the local mantle: (1) a MORB-like component, characterized by the highest He-isotope ratios (7.8–8.1 Ra), and (2) an OIB-like component, characterized by lower He-isotope ratios (7.0–7.2 Ra), coming from the subduction of the Galapagos seamounts. An overview at the regional scale indicates that high He-isotope ratios are peculiar to the two extreme sectors of the CAVF (Costa Rica to the south and Guatemala to the north), whereas in the central sector (Nicaragua) the magma source is probably contaminated by slab fluids. For the past few years Turrialba volcano has been in a volcanic unrest phase that has included a series of explosions, the most recent of which occurred between October 2014 and May 2015. The volcano is subject to an ongoing safety alert due to the possibility of a magmatic eruption. One of the crucial questions to be addressed is the kind of eruption that can be expected, and hence what type of magma is likely to be involved. The high 3He/4He ratios (7.8–8.0 Ra) measured during 2011 at high-temperature fumaroles of Turrialba craters are comparable to those measured in fluid inclusions of basaltic andesites that erupted in 1864–1866, suggesting that the magma currently feeding the shallow plumbing system has similar geochemical characteristics to the most recently erupted magma.

Beschreibung: This paper shows the main outcomes of the Puyehue volcano (Chile) eruption monitoring by means of multisensor remote sensing instruments working from thermal infrared (TIR) to microwave (MW) spectral range. Thanks to the use of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) and the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), the eruption evolution was observed, capturing the deformations of volcano edifice, the lava extension, as well as the information on ash and gas emitted. On the one hand, SAR Interferometry applied to ENVISAT-ASAR data allowed the estimation of the deformation occurred just before the beginning of the eruption and the subsequent deflation, with monthly sampling. On the other hand, with the combined use of the very high resolution (VHR) images taken by COSMO-SkyMed X-band SAR, and ENVISAT-ASAR ones, we were able to follow the lava deposition during the most intense phase of the eruption. Additionally, the joined exploitation of SAR and optical MODIS images allowed ash detection, also in cloudy sky conditions. Finally, the information gathered by both types of sensors allowed to highlight some volcanological features of the eruption and the relationship between surface deformation and the amount of ash and gases emitted by the volcano.

Beschreibung: A spatial variation in chemical and isotopical composition is observed between the volcanoes belonging to the Campanian Comagmatic Province. At a given MgO content, magmas from volcanic islands (Procida and Ischia) are enriched in Ti, Na, depleted in La, Ba, Rb, Sr, Th, K contents, and shows lower LREE/HFSE (e.g., La/Nb = 1-2), lower Sr-Pb isotopic ratios and higher Nd isotopic ratios with respect to magmas from volcanoes located inland (Campi Flegrei and Somma-Vesuvius). The observed compositional variations are explained involving two different mantle sources in the genesis of the magmas erupted in this region: a deeper asthenospheric mantle source, from which the Tyrrhenian magmas also derived and a lithospheric mantle source enriched by slabderived fluids. The contribution of the enriched-lithospheric mantle became more pronounced moving from the Tyrrhenian abyssal plain through the Italian Peninsula where it dominates, likely in response to the thickening of the lithosphere observed under the Peninsula.

Beschreibung: Petrographic, minerochemical, and geothermobarometric data are reported for a suite of 19 spinel-lherzolite pargasite xenoliths hosted in a Quaternary basanitic lava flow from 20 the North-Western Ethiopian Plateau (Injibara, Lake Tana Province). Protogranular to 21 porphyroclastic (deformed) rocks show evidence of a modal metasomatism, represented 22 by a Cl-rich pargasitic amphibole, coupled with criptic enrichment in Fe and Al. 23 Equigranular rocks (granular) record a further cryptic metasomatism, represented by 24 enrichment in Fe, Al, Na, and depletion in Ni, Cr and Cl. Some xenoliths (transitional) 25 show intermediate textural and compositional characters, indicating that the granular 26 samples represent an evolution of the deformed ones. All xenoliths give the same P–T 27 equilibration conditions for Opx-Cpx pairs (947–1015 C and 1.3–2 GPa), but in 28 granular samples, recrystallised olivine and spinel record T about 100 C higher. Two 29 distinct metasomatic processes, probably connected with the emplacement of the Afar plume, are proposed. The first one is a pervasive modal metasomatism produced by 2 water-rich fluids. The latter is a non-pervasive cryptic metasomatism, probably con- 3 nected to migration of melts. The comparison among the mantle beneath the Ethiopi- 4 an Volcanic Plateau, the southern Main Ethiopian Rift and the central Main Ethiopian 5 Rift suggests a spatial heterogeneity in mantle processes, during asthenospheric 6 upwelling.
